  • In this paper, a higher-order mode coupler using coaxial-structure waveguide for Ku-band monopulse satellite tracking is proposed. The proposed higher-order mode coupler is built in a coaxial structure for compactness and weight reduction, making it suitable for mobile tracking systems. The inner circular waveguide of coaxial-structure is used to extract the fundamental mode signal and the high-order mode signal is extracted from the four slots of the outer circular waveguide and then transmitted via given stepped rectangular waveguide structure. The simulated results show that proposed higher-order mode coupler covers 250 MHz(12.75 GHz ~ 13.00 GHz) bandwidth with return loss and insertion loss characteristics. The antenna patterns of fundamental mode and higher-order mode applicable to monopulse tracking are generated successfully. Designed higher-order mode coupler using coaxial waveguide structure for Ku-band is expected to be used for high precision monopulse satellite tracking systems.

  • This paper proposes a high-performance VLSl architecture using distributed arithmetic for higher-order FIR filters with complex coefficients. For the purpose of realizing high sampling rate with small latency in high-order filters, we apply distributed arithmetic[1]. Moreover, in order to decrease drastically the power dissipation, the structure applying not ROM's but optimum function circuits which we have previously proposed, is utilized[2][3]. However, this structure increases in the number of adders as compared to the conventional structure applying ROM's. In order to realize a more effective method for further higher-order filter, we propose newly an implementation applying two methods which have large effects on the unit using the adders. First , we propose an implementation applying SFAs(Serial Full Adders) and SFSs(Serial Full Subtractors). Second, we propose a structure applying proposed 4-2 adders. Finally, it is shown that the proposed architecture is an effective way to realize low power dissipation and small latency while the sampling rate is kept constant for further higher-order filters with complex coefficients.

  • Packaging structures to block the propagation of higherorder modes in the shielded microstrip lines are designed. Packaging for microwave circuits is necessary, basically, to isolate and protect circuits from outside environments both physically and electrically. The drawback of packaging is the possibility of higherorder mode propagation, similar to waveguide modes, as the operating frequency increases. One of Possible choices for the higherorder mode suppression is to insert diaphragms to the housing structure. The shielding effects of diaphragms are analyzed using an FEM code. Several parameters such as dispersion, mode conversion, and higherorder mode transmission and reflection are analyzed. The effect of higherorder mode suppression is eminent as the depth or width of a diaphragm is increased in the air region of the microstrip line. It is shown that inductive diaphragm structure can lower ${S_21}$ for the secondorder mode incidence by 30㏈, comparing with the conventional capacitive diaphragm structure. Packaging structure analyzed in this paper can be applied usefully to the design of the microwave system in a package such as transmit/receive modules.

  • This paper describes a method of the refined plastic hinge approach in the framework of the higher-order element formulation that can efficaciously evaluate the limit state capacity of a whole reinforced concrete structural system using least number of element(s), whereas the traditional design of a reinforced concrete structure (i.e. AS3600; Eurocode 2) is member-based approach. Hence, in regard to the material nonlinearities, the efficient and economical cross-section analysis is provided to evaluate the element section capacity of non-uniform and arbitrary concrete section subjected to the interaction effects, which is helpful to formulate the refined plastic hinge method. In regard to the geometric nonlinearities, this paper relies on the higher-order element formulation with element load effect. Eventually, the load redistribution can be considered and make full use of the strength reserved owing to the redundancy of an indeterminate structure. And it is particularly true for the performance-based design of a structure under the extreme loads, while the uncertainty of the extreme load is great that the true behaviour of a whole structural system is important for the economical design approach, which is great superiority over the conservative optimal strength of an individual and isolated member based on traditional design (i.e. AS3600; Eurocode 2).

  • In this work, we fabricated liquid crystal (LC) emulsions with fatty alcohol in order to stabilize high content ceramide in cosmetic formulation. We investigated the role of fatty alcohol and surfactant in the formation of higher order structure. As a result, we found that they play a crucial role to form higher order structure. SAXS study shows that ceramide can be incorporated up to 3% in cosmetic formulation with higher order structure and its stability was maintained up to 12 weeks at room temperature. According to WAXS study, the higher order structure can suppress the re-crystallization of ceramide in cosmetic formulation. Finally, we performed in vivo skin barrier recovery test for the damaged skin. LC emulsions with ceramide and O/W emulsions show significant effect in skin barrier recovery at D 1, D 2 and D 6 compared to the untreated condition. While only LC emulsions show significant skin recovery effect at D 14. We expect that LC emulsions are the promising skin carrier to stabilize ceramide and LC emulsions with ceramide can improve the skin barrier function.

  • This paper aims at enlightening the properties, computational and implementation issues related to Kalman filter based state estimation algorithms and sliding mode observers, by applying them for estimating the states of a smart structure system. The Kalman based estimators considered in this work are Kalman filter and information filter and, the sliding mode observers considered are Utkin observer and higher order sliding mode observer. A fourth order linear time invariant model of a piezo actuated beam is used in this work. This structure is embedded with four number of piezo patches, of which two act as sensors, one as disturbance actuator and the other as control actuator. The performance of the state estimation algorithms is evaluated through simulation, for the first two vibrating modes of the piezo actuated structure, when the structure is maintained at first mode and second mode resonance.

  • The nonlinear thermal buckling load parameter of the laminated composite panel structure is investigated numerically using the higher-order theory including the stretching effect through the thickness and presented in this research article. The large geometrical distortion of the curved panel structure due to the elevated thermal loading is modeled via Green-Lagrange strain field including all of the higher-order terms to achieve the required generality. The desired solutions are obtained numerically using the finite element steps in conjunction with the direct iterative method. The concurrence of the present nonlinear panel model has been established via adequate comparison study with available published data. Finally, the effect of different influential parameters which affect the nonlinear buckling strength of laminated composite structure are examined through numerous numerical examples and discussed in details.

  • The aim of the present paper is to study the lifts of a golden structure to tangent bundles of order r. We proved that r-lift of the golden structure F in the tangent bundle of order r is also a golden structure. We have also proved some theorems on the projection tensor in the tangent bundle of order r. Later we have established prolongations of G-structures immersed in the golden structure to the tangent bundle of order r and 2. Finally, we constructed few examples of the golden structure that admit an almost para contact structure on the tangent bundle of order 3 and 4.

  • Ocean space utilization using VLFS(Very Large Floating Structures) can provide environmental impact free space by allowing sea water flow freely through the floating structure. Use of Pontoon type VLFS for that purpose needs employment of breakwaters for reduction of wave effects. Therefore, in order to maximize advantage of environmental impact free structure, the breakwater should be the one that can allow water flow freely through it, too. In this paper hydroelastic response of a pontoon type structure is analyzed considering breakwaters which allow water flow through its opening at bottom of the breakwaters. Mode superposition technique is used for solving equation of flexible body while interactions between the pontoon and breakwaters is considered based on generalized mode concept. Bi-quadratic nine node higher-order boundary element method is adopted for more accurate numerical treatment near sharp edged body shape. Performance of various combinations of breakwaters is investigated.

  • In eukaryotes, the genome is hierarchically packed inside the nucleus, which facilitates physical contact between cis-regulatory elements (CREs), such as enhancers and promoters. Accumulating evidence highlights the critical role of higher-order chromatin structure in precise regulation of spatiotemporal gene expression under diverse biological contexts including lineage commitment and cell activation by external stimulus. Genomics and imaging-based technologies, such as Hi-C and DNA fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), have revealed the key principles of genome folding, while newly developed tools focus on improvement in resolution, throughput and modality at single-cell and population levels, and challenge the knowledge obtained through conventional approaches. In this review, we discuss recent advances in our understanding of principles of higher-order chromosome conformation and technologies to investigate 4D chromatin interactions.
