To study the vibration characteristics of a high-speed railway continuous girder bridge-track coupling system (HSRCBT), a coupling vibration analysis model of an m-span continuous girder bridge-subgrade-track system with n-span approach bridge was established. The model was based on the energy and its variational method, where both the interlaminar slip and shear deformation effects were considered. In addition, the free vibration equations and natural boundary conditions of the HSRCBT were derived. Further, according to the coordination principle of deformation and mechanics, an analytical method for calculating the natural vibration frequencies of the HSRCBT was obtained. Three typical bridge-subgrade-track coupling systems of high-speed railway were taken and the results of finite element analysis were compared to those of the analytical method. The errors between the simulation results and calculated values of the analytical method were less than 3%, thus verifying the analytical method proposed in this paper. Finally, the analytical method was used to investigate the influence of the number of the approach bridge spans and the interlaminar stiffness on the natural vibration characteristics of the HSRCBT based on the degree of sensitivity. The results suggest the approach bridges have a critical number of spans and in general, the precision requirements of the analysis could be met by using 6-span approach bridges. The interlaminar vertical compressive stiffness has very little influence on the low-order natural vibration frequency of HSRCBT, but does have a significant influence on higher-order natural vibration frequency. As the interlaminar vertical compressive stiffness increases, the degree of sensitivity to interlaminar stiffness of each of the HSRCBT natural vibration characteristics decrease and gradually approach zero.
This paper presents a high-order shear and normal deformation theory for the bending of FGM plates. The number of unknowns and governing equations of the present theory is reduced, and hence makes it simple to use. Unlike any other theory, the number of unknown functions involved in displacement field is only four, as against five or more in the case of other shear and normal deformation theories. Based on the novel shear and normal deformation theory, the position of neutral surface is determined and the governing equilibrium equations based on neutral surface are derived. There is no stretching-bending coupling effect in the neutral surface-based formulation, and consequently, the governing equations of functionally graded plates based on neutral surface have the simple forms as those of isotropic plates. Navier-type analytical solution is obtained for functionally graded plate subjected to transverse load for simply supported boundary conditions. The accuracy of the present theory is verified by comparing the obtained results with other quasi-3D higher-order theories reported in the literature. Other numerical examples are also presented to show the influences of the volume fraction distribution, geometrical parameters and power law index on the bending responses of the FGM plates are studied.
Objectives : This study reviewed the antioxidant activity of each part of Portulacae Herba (PH) in order to better analyze the possibility of PH being used as a natural material. Methods : The root, stem, and leaves of the PH were separated, dried at $50^{\circ}C$, put in a 70% ethanol and then extracted three times every six hours. Antioxidant activities was performed by measuring the total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents, DPPH, ABTS, nitrite, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, and $Fe^{2+}$ chelating. Results : The total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents was highest in the root, then the leaves, and lastly the stem. DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities for the root extract indicated the highest activity followed by the leaf and stem extracts. It also showed similar activity to that of the ascorbic acid. Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity and $Fe^{2+}$ chelating activity resulted to be highest in the root extract and then the leaf and stem extracts. Nitrite scavenging activity decreased with higher pH levels, and activity was highest in the order of root extract, leaf extract, and stem extract. Also, in reaction to a solution with a pH 1.2 level, the root extract showed similar scavenging activity to that of BHT. Conclusions : Therefore, based on the above results, it was verified that the roots of PH have a high antioxidant level, and they can be considered to have potential to be applied to functional food, cosmetics, and medicine with antioxidant efficacy.

The free and live load-forced vibration behaviour of porous functionally graded (PFG) higher order nanobeams in the thermal and magnetic fields is investigated comprehensively through this work in the framework of nonlocal strain gradient theory (NLSGT). The porosity effects on the dynamic behaviour of FG nanobeams is investigated using four different porosity distribution models. These models are exploited; uniform, symmetrical, condensed upward, and condensed downward distributions. The material characteristics gradation in the thickness direction is estimated using the power-law. The magnetic field effect is incorporated using Maxwell's equations. The third order shear deformation beam theory is adopted to incorporate the shear deformation effect. The Hamilton principle is adopted to derive the coupled thermomagnetic dynamic equations of motion of the whole system and the associated boundary conditions. Navier method is used to derive the analytical solution of the governing equations. The developed methodology is verified and compared with the available results in the literature and good agreement is observed. Parametric studies are conducted to show effects of porosity parameter; porosity distribution, temperature rise, magnetic field intensity, material gradation index, non-classical parameters, and the applied moving load velocity on the vibration behavior of nanobeams. It has been showed that all the analyzed conditions have significant effects on the dynamic behavior of the nanobeams. Additionally, it has been observed that the negative effects of moving load, porosity and thermal load on the nanobeam dynamics can be reduced by the effect of the force induced from the directed magnetic field or can be kept within certain desired design limits by controlling the intensity of the magnetic field.
In this paper, buckling and free vibration of imperfect, functionally graded beams, including porosities, are investigated, using a higher order shear strain theory. Due to defects during the manufacturing process, micro porosities may appear in the material, hence the appearance of this imperfection in the structure. The material properties of the beams are assumed to vary regularly, with power and sigmoid law, in the direction of thickness. A novel porosity distribution affecting the functionally graded volume fraction is presented. For the compact formulation used for cementite-based materials and already used in P-FGM, we have adapted it for the distribution of S-FGM. The equations of motion in the FG beam are derived using Hamilton's principle. The boundary conditions for beam FG are assumed to be simply supported. Navier's solution is used to obtain the closed form solutions of the FG beam. The numerical results of this work are compared with those of other published research to verify accuracy and reliability. The comparisons of different shear shape functions, the influence of porosity, thickness and inhomogeneity parameters on buckling and free vibration of the FG beam are all discussed. It is established that the present work is more precise than certain theories developed previously.
BACKGROUND: Heavy-metal pollution represents an important environmental problem due to the toxic effects of metals, and their accumulation throughout the food chain leads to serious ecological and health problems. METHODS AND RESULTS: Optimum conditions in continuous-flow stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and packedbed column contactor (PBCC) using brown seaweed biosorbent were investigated. Under optimum conditions from both lab-scale biosorbent systems, removal efficiency of copper (Cu) in a large-scale PBCC system was investigated. Removal capacity of Cu using brown seaweed biosorbent in a lab-scale CSTR system was higher than that in a lab-scale PBCC system. On the other hand, over 48 L/day of flow rate in Cu solution, removal efficiency of Cu in a lab-scale PBCC system was higher than that in a lab-scale CSTR system. Optimum flow rate of Cu was 24 L/day, optimum Cu solution concentration was 100 mg/L. Removal capacity of Cu at different stages was higher in the order of double column biosorption system > single column biosorption system. Under different heavy metals, removal capacities of heavy metal were higher in the order of Pb > Cr > Ni > Mn ${\geq}$ Cu ${\geq}$ Cd ${\fallingdotseq}$ Zn ${\geq}$ Co. Removal capacity of Cu was 138 L in a large-scale PBCC system. Removal capacity of Cu a large-scale PBCC system was similar with in a lab-scale PBCC system. CONCLUSION(s): Therefore, PBCC system using brown seaweed biosorbent was suitable for treating heavy metal wastewater.
As alternatives to antibiotics in livestocks, probiotics have been used, although most of them in the form of liquid or semisolid formulations, which show low cell viability after oral administration. Therefore, suitable dry dosage forms should be developed for livestocks to protect probiotics against the low pH in the stomach such that the products have higher probiotics survivability. Here, in order to develop a dry dosage forms of probiotics for poultry, we used hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate 55 (HPMCP 55) as a tablet-forming matrix to develop probiotics in a tablet form for poultry. Here, we made three different kinds of probiotics-loaded tablet under different compression forces and investigated their characteristics based on their survivability, morphology, disintegration time, and kinetics in simulated gastrointestinal fluid. The results indicated that the probiotics formulated in the tablets displayed higher survival rates in acidic gastric conditions than probiotics in solution. Rapid release of the probiotics from the tablets occurred in simulated intestinal fluid because of fast swelling of the tablets in neutral pH. As a matrix of tablet, HPMCP 55 provided good viability of probiotics after 6 months under refrigeration. Moreover, after oral administration of probiotics-loaded tablets to chicken, more viable probiotics were observed, than with solution type, through several digestive areas of chicken by the tablets.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) belong to an ideal material for field emitters because of their superior electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties together with unique geometric features. Several applications of CNTs to field emitters have been demonstrated in electron emission devices such as field emission display (FED), backlight unit (BLU), X-ray source, etc. In this study, we fabricated a CNT cathode by using filtration processes. First, an aqueous CNT solution was prepared by ultrasonically dispersing purified single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) in deionized water with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The aqueous CNT solution in a milliliter or even several tens of micro-litters was filtered by an alumina membrane through the vacuum filtration, and an ultra-thin CNT film was formed onto the alumina membrane. Thereafter, the alumina membrane was solvated by acetone, and the floating CNT film was easily transferred to indium-tin-oxide (ITO) glass substrate in an area defined as 1 cm with a film mask. The CNT film was subjected to an activation process with an adhesive roller, erecting the CNTs up to serve as electron emitters. In order to measure their luminance characteristics, an ITO-coated glass substrate having phosphor was employed as an anode plate. Our field emitter array (FEA) was fairly transparent unlike conventional FEAs, which enabled light to emit not only through the anode frontside but also through the cathode backside, where luminace on the cathode backside was higher than that on the anode frontside. Futhermore, we added a reflecting metal layer to cathode or anode side to enhance the luminance of light passing through the other side. In one case, the metal layer was formed onto the bottom face of the cathode substrate and reflected the light back so that light passed only through the anode substrate. In the other case, the reflecting layer coated on the anode substrate made all light go only through the cathode substrate. Among the two cases, the latter showed higher luminance than the former. This study will discuss the morphologies and field emission characteristics of CNT emitters according to the experimental parameters in fabricating the lamps emitting light on the both sides or only on the either side.
During ozonation process, the hydroxyl radical generation rates were measured under different experimental conditions (ozone feed rate, nitrobenzene concentration, hydroxyl radical scavenger, pH, HO$_2$O$_2$/O$_3$ etc.) Nitrobenzene could be decomposed by hydroxyl radical rather than ozone only and nitrobenzene decomposition rate was expressed with functions of ozone and nitrobenzene concentration. The rate was decreased as the hydroxyl radical scavenger concentration was increased, and all results were followed pseudo first-order reaction. Using a competitive method, hydroxyl radical generation rate was measured with probe compound and scavenger. It was proportional to ozone concentration, and 0.24mo1 of hydroxyl radical was produced with 1mol of ozone. Under different pH conditions, hydroxyl radical generation rates were measured (pH 10.2 (0.91Ms$^{-1}$ ) > pH 7.3 (0.72Ms$^{-1}$ ) > pH 5.6 (0.67Ms$^{-1}$ ) > pH 3.4 (0.63Ms$^{-1}$ )) showing higher generation rate at high pH values. Addition of hydrogen peroxide promoted the generation rate of hydroxyl radical. Considering the results of pH experiments and addition of hydrogen peroxide experiments, the hydroxyl radical generation rate was 1.6 times higher in hydrogen peroxide solution than in high pH solution, indicating addition of hydrogen peroxide is better promoter to produce the hydroxyl radical in ozonation. These results could be applied to AOPs to remediate the contaminated wastewater and groundwater.
In order to investigate the durability of high performance polymer concrete composites, polymer concrete specimens were prepared using the ortho-type unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) and iso-type UPR as a polymer binder and the calcium carbonate and silica fine powder as a filler. The durability of polymer concrete specimens was measured by hot water resistance, chemical resistance, pore analysis and SEM observation. The compressive strength of the specimen using the iso-type UPR was higher than that of using the ortho-type UPR, and the compressive strength of the specimen using the silica fine powder was higher than that of using the calcium carbonate filler. From hot water resistance results, it was found that the specimen using the iso-type UPR was superior to that of using the ortho-type UPR and the specimen using the calcium carbonate filler was superior to that of using the silica fine powder. The compressive strength reduction rate was measured after the chemical resistance test and the sodium hydroxide solution showed the highest reduction rate, followed by sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and calcium chloride solutions. When using the alkaline solution of sodium hydroxide, the weight reduction rate of the specimen using calcium carbonate was lower than that of using silica fine powder, while for the acidic solutions of sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid, the weight reduction rate of the specimen using the silica fine powder was lower than that of using calcium carbonate.
