  • In this paper, we designed and fabricated the frequency mixer, which is the core parts of high frequency head in Ku-band tracking radar. To overcome the problem of single-ended and single-balanced resistive structure, we designed the fine-line structure with balanced mixer, to generate IF signal without distortion in L-band, after receiving the RF signal of the Ku-band. The prototype mixer showed a Noise Figure Max of 6.823dB, Gain of 4.1598~4.676dB and Band Pass of 61MHz in 5 Ku-band samples frequency.

  • A highly sensitive magnetic sensor using the Giant MagnetoImpedance effect has been developed. The sensor performance is studied and estimated. The sensor circuitry consists of a square wave generator (driving source), a sensing element in a form of composite wire of a 25 $\mu$m copper core electrodeposited with a thin layer of soft magnetic material ($Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$), and two amplifier stages for improving the gain, switching mechanism, scaler circuit, an AC power source driving the permeability of the magnetic coating layer of the sensing element into a dynamic state, and a signal pickup LC circuit formed by a pickup coil and an capacitor. Experimental studies on sensor have been carried out to investigate the key parameters in relation to the sensor sensitivity and resolution. The results showed that for high sensitivity and resolution, the frequency and magnitude of the ac driving current through the sensing element each has an optimum value, the resonance frequency of the signal pickup LC circuit should be equal to or twice as the driving frequency on the sensing element, and the anisotropy of the magnetic coating layer of the sensing wire element should be longitudinal.

  • In this work, micro-scale, high-performance solenoid-type RF chip inductors utilizing amorphous $Al_2O_3$ core material were investigated. The size of the chip inductors was $0.86{\times}0.46{\times}0.45mm^3$ and copper(Cu) wire with $27{\mu}m$ diameter was used as the coil. High frequency characteristics of the inductance(L), quality factor(Q), impedance(Z), and equivalent circuit parameters of the RE chip inductors were measured and analyzed using an RF impedance/material analyzer(HP4291B with HP16193A test fixture). It was observed that the RF chip inductors with the number of turns of 9 to 12 have the inductance of 21 to 34nH and exhibit the self-resonant frequency(SRF) of 5.7 to 3.7GHz. The SRF of inductors decreases with increasing the inductance and inductors have the quality factor of 38 to 49 in the frequency range of 900MHz to 1,7GHz.

  • In this study, the variations of the important characteristics of solenoid-type RF chip inductors utilizing a low-loss A1203 core material on inductor dimensions were investigated systematically. Four dimensions of the chip inductors fabricated in this work were $1.0\times0.5\times0.5mm^3,\;1.5\times1.0\times0.7mm^3,\;2.1\times1.5\times1.0mm^3,\;and\;2.4\times2.0\times1.4mm^3$ and copper (Cu) wire with $40{\mu}m$ diameter was used as the coils. High frequency characteristics of the inductance, quality factor, and impedance of developed inductors as a function of inductor dimensions were measured using an RF Impedance/Material Analyzer (HP4291B with HP16193A test fixture). It was observed that the developed inductors with the number of turns of 6 have the inductance (L) of 12 to 82 nH and exhibit the self-resonant frequency (SRE) of 3.6 to 1.2 GHz. The SRF of inductors decreases with increasing the inductor size while the L increases with the inductor size. The smallest inductors of $1.0\times0.5\times0.5mm^3$ exhibited the L of 12 nH, SRF of 3.6 GHz, and the quality factor of 67 near the frequency of 1.1 GHz. The calculated data predicted the high-frequency data of the L, and Q of the developed inductors well.

  • In this study, we investigated the structure and properties of a highly heat conductive metal-ceramic core-shell CoAl2O4@Al micro-composite for heterogeneous catalysts support. The CoAl2O4@Al was prepared by hydrothermal surface oxidation of Al metal powder, which resulted in the structure with a high heat conductive Al metal core encapsulated by a high surface area CoAl2O4 shell. For comparison, CoAl2O4 was also prepared by co-precipitation method and also utilized for a catalyst support. Rh catalysts supported on CoAl2O4@Al and CoAl2O4 were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation and characterized by N2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), CO chemisorption, and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). The properties of catalysts were investigated for glycerol steam reforming reaction for hydrogen production at 550 ℃. Rh/CoAl2O4@Al exhibited about 2.8 times higher glycerol conversion turnover frequency (TOF) than Rh/CoAl2O4 due to facilitated heat transport through the core-shell structure. The CoAl2O4@Al and CoAl2O4 also showed some catalytic activities due to a partial reduction of Co on the support, and a higher catalytic activity was also found on the CoAl2O4@Al core-shell than CoAl2O4. These catalysts, however, displayed deactivation on the reaction stream due to carbon deposition on the catalysts surface.

  • In this study, the optimal driving frequency was derived through finite element analysis (FEA) to optimize the developed piezoelectric ultrasonic medical devices(PUMD) for bone surgery. The core of the PUMD is the piezoelectric ceramic (PZT), which is a vibrator that generates vibration energy. The piezoelectric ceramic shows the maximum current value with respect to the input voltage at the resonance frequency, which generates the maximum mechanical vibration. In the past, various studies have been conducted related to the analysis of PUMD, but most of the research so far has been limited to free vibration analysis. However, in order to derive the accurate resonant frequency, the initial stress generated by bolt tightening in the bolt-clamped Langevin type transducer (BLT) must be considered. In this study, after designing a PUMD, the driving performance according to the bolt tightening value was analyzed through FEA, and this was experimentally verified. First, the resonance mode and frequency response were confirmed through modal and harmonic analysis at 20-40 kHz, which is known as the optimal driving frequency band of PUMD for bone surgery. In addition, the design of the PUMD was confirmed by checking the mechanical behavior of the tip and the piezoelectric ceramic at the resonant frequency. Consequentially, the characteristic evaluation was performed, and it was confirmed that the resonant frequency result derived through the FEA was reasonable. Through this study, we presented a more rational FEA method than before for BLT transducers. We expect that this will shorten the time and cost of developing a PUMD, and will enable the development of more stable and high-quality products.

  • Owing to technical advances in very large-scale integrated circuits (VLSI), high-speed digital signal processing (DSP) chips become fast enough to allow for real-time implementation of hearing aid algorithms in units small enough to be wearable. In this paper, we present a digital hearing aid processor (DHAP) chip built around a general-purpose 16-bit DSP core. The designed DHAP performs a nonlinear loudness correction of 8 octave frequency bands based on audiometric measurements. By employing a programmable DSP, the DHAP provides all the flexibility needed to implement audiological algorithms. In addition, the has a low power feature and $5.410\times5.720mm^2$ dimensions that fit for wearable devices.

  • We designed a SIMD-DSP/FPU that can efficiently improve multimedia processing performance when integrated into high-performance embedded microprocessors. We proposed partitioned architectures and new schemes for several functional units to reduce chip area. Sharing functional units reduces the area of FPU significantly. The proposed architecture is modeled in HDL and synthesized with a 0.35$\mu\textrm{m}$ standard cell library. The chip area is estimated to be about 100,000 equivalent gates. The designed unit can run at higher than 50MHz clock frequency of CPU core under the worst-case operating conditions.
