  • High temperature superconductor (HTS) magnet systems usually employ metal current leads which bridge between the cryogenic environment and room temperature. Such current leads are the dominant heat load for these magnet systems due to a combination of electrical resistance and heat conduction. HTS flux pumps enable large currents to be injected into a HTS magnet circuit without this heat load. We present results from an axial-type HTS mechanically rotating flux pump which employs a ferromagnetic circuit and a Cu-stabilized coated conductor (CC) HTS stator. We show the device can be described by a simple circuit model which was previously used to describe barrel-type flux pumps, where the model comprises an internal resistance due to dynamic resistance and a DC voltage source. Unlike previously reported devices, we show the internal resistance and DC voltage in the flux pump are not exactly proportional to frequency, and we ascribe this to the presence of eddy currents. We also show that this axial-type flux pump has superior current injection capability over barrel-type flux pumps which do not incorporate a magnetic circuit.

  • In this paper, insulations characteristics by temperature changes($+10{\sim}-60[^{\circ}C]$) of $SF_6$ 9as in the experimental chamber were studied. From this result, The breakdown characteristics classify the gas & liquid coexisted stage of voltage value increases & much deviation and the $V_B$ low stage as the interior of chamber gets filled with mixture of $SF_6$ that are not liquefacted and remaining air which couldn't be ventilated. In addition the ability of insulation of liquid $SF_6$ was higher than that of the highly pressurized $SF_6$ gas. In this research, we want to provide the base data on designing insulation of high-temperature superconductor and the cryogenic equipments by investigating the insulation characteristics of $SF_6$.

  • In superconducting magnet applications, winding methods of the superconducting magnet can be classified into a layer winding and a pancake winding. The superconducting magnet using high temperature superconductor (HTS) with rectangular shape is generally fabricated using the pancake winding method. On the other hand, low temperature superconducting (LTS) magnet may be wound by either a pancake winding or a layer winding. Compared with the layer winding, the pancake winding method has a merit of easy replacement of a damaged pancake module, but it also has a demerit of requirement of splicing between each double pancake modules. In this paper, we investigated characteristics of the layer and pancake winding methods using HTS. Six samples were wound out of BSCCO and Coated Conductors (CCs) by two winding methods and their characteristics were experimentally observed.

  • Rare earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) materials have shown the possibility of high-temperature superconductor (HTS) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) magnets due to their elevated transition temperature. While numerous MRI magnet designs have emerged, there is a growing emphasis on estimating the cost before manufacturing. In this paper, we propose two designs of REBCO whole-body MRI magnets: (1) 1.5 T and (2) 3.0 T, the standard center field choices for hospital use, and compare their costs based on conductor usage. The basis topology of the design method is based on discretized solenoids to enhance field homogeneity. Magnetic stress calculation is done to further prove the mechanical feasibility of their construction. Multi-width winding technique and outer notch structure are used to improve critical current characteristic. We apply consistent constraints for current margins, sizes, and field homogeneities to ensure an equal cost comparison. A graph is plotted to show the cost increase with magnetic flux growth. Additionally, we compare our designs to two additional MRI magnet designs from other publications with respect to the cost and magnetic flux, and present the linear relationship between them.

  • $(Nd/Y)_{1.8}Ba_{}2.4Cu_{3.4}O_{7-x}$high $T_c$ superconductor was directionally grown by floating Bone melt growth process with a large temperature gradient in air. Cylindrical green rods of (Nd/Y)1.8 oxides were fabricated by cold isostatic pressing (CIP) method using rubber mold. Microstructures were observed by SEM and TEM and superconducting properties were measured by a SQUID magnetometer. Nonsuperconducting $(Nd/Y)_2BaCuO_5$ inclusions were uniformly distributed within the superconducting $(Nd/Y)Ba_2Cu_3O_x$ matrix. The directionally melt-textured (Nd/Y) 1.8 superconductor showed an onset Tc $\geq$ 90 K and a sharp superconducting transition.

  • To improve in-field critical current densities ($J_c$) of $GdBa_2Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ (GdBCO) coated conductors(CCs) fabricated by the reactive co-evaporation by deposition and reaction (RCE-DR) process, employing the nominal composition of Gd:Ba:Cu=1:1:2.5, we tried to refine the $Gd_2O_3$ particles trapped in the GdBCO superconducting matrix. For this purpose, we carefully selected the processing conditions on the stability phase diagram of GdBCO for this composition. By lowering the growth temperature of $Gd_2O_3$ in the liquid, we could refine the average particle size of $Gd_2O_3$ particles trapped in the GdBCO matrix and also achieve the zero-resistive transition temperatures ($T_{c,zero}$) of 92.3~94.2 K. Unfortunately, however, it was unsuccessful to achieve enhanced in-field $J_c$ values from these samples because of an air-contamination of the amorphous precursor film before its conversion into crystalline GdBCO film, suggesting that any exposure of the amorphous precursor film to air is fatal in obtaining high performance GdBCO CCs via the RCE-DR process.

  • In order to realize economical applications, it is important to reduce the ac loss of 2G high-temperature superconductor coated conductors. It seems to be reasonable that a multi-filamentary wire can decrease the magnetization loss. In this study, we prepared two samples of YBCO coated conductors with striations. We measured local superconducting properties of both samples by using Low Temperature Scanning Laser and Hall Probe Microscopy (LTSLHPM). The distribution of the local critical temperature of samples was analyzed from experimental results of Low Temperature Scanning Laser Microscopy (LTSLM) near the superconducting transition temperature. According to LTSLM results, spatial distributions of the local critical temperature of both samples are homogeneous. The local current density and the local magnetization in samples were explored from measuring stray fields by using Scanning Hall Probe Microscopy (SHPM). From SHPM results, the remanent field pattern of the one bridge sample in an external magnetic field confirms the Bean's critical state model and the three bridge sample has similar remanent field pattern of the one bridge sample. The local magnetization curve in the three bridge sample was measured from external fields from -500 Oe to 500 Oe. We visualized that the distribution of local hysteresis loss are related in the distribution of the remanent field of the three bridge sample. Although the field dependence of the critical current density must be taken into account, the relation of the local hysteresis loss and the remanent field from Bean's model was useful.

  • Closed-loop J-T (Joule-Thomson) refrigeration cycle is advantageous compared to common open loop $N_2$ decompression system in terms of nitrogen consumption. In this study, two closed-loop pure $N_2$ J-T refrigeration systems with sub-atmospheric device for cooling High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) power cable are investigated. J-T cooling systems include 2-stage compressor, 2-stage precooling cycle, J-T valve and a cold compressor or an auxiliary vacuum pump at the room temperature. The cold compressor and the vacuum pump are installed after the J-T valve to create sub-atmospheric condition. The temperature of 67 K is possible by lowering the pressure up to 24 kPa at the cold part. The optimized hydrocarbon mixed refrigerant (MR) J-T system is applied for precooling stage. The cold head of precooling MR J-T have the temperature from 120 K to 150 K. The various characteristics of cold compressor are invstigated and applied to design parameter of the cold compressor. The Carnot efficiency of cold compressor system is calculated as 16.7% and that of vacuum pump system as 16.4%. The efficiency difference between the cold compressor system and the vacuum pump system is due to difference of enthalpy change at cryogenic temperature, enthalpy change at room temperature and different work load at the pre-cooling cycle. The efficiency of neon-nitrogen MR J-T system is also presented for comparison with the sub-atmospheric devices. These systems have several pros and cons in comparison to typical MR J-T systems such as vacuum line maintainability, system's COP and etc. In this paper, the detailed design of the subcooled $N_2$ J-T systems are examined and some practical issues of the sub-atmospheric devices are discussed.

  • Three-phase multi-layer high temperature superconducting coaxial (TPMHTSC) cable is being actively studied due to advantages such as the reduction of the amount of superconducting wire usage and the miniaturization of the cable. The electrical characteristics of TPMHTSC cables differ from those of conventional superconducting cables, so sufficient analysis is required to apply them to the actual system. In this paper, the authors modeled 22.9 kV, 60 MVA TPMHTSC cable and analyzed the transient characteristics using a PSCAD/EMTDC-based simulation. As a result, when a fault current flows in TPMHTSC cable, most of the fault current is bypassed through the copper former layers. At this time, the total cable temperature increased by about 5 K. Through this study, we can verify the reliability of the TPMHTSC cable against the transient state, and it can be helpful for the practical application of the cable in the future.
