The effect of particle sizes on the aerosol deposition (AD) of Cu films is investigated in order to understand the deposition behaviors of metal powder during the AD process. The Cu coatings fabricated by using $2{\mu}m$ Cu powders had a dense microstructure, a high deposition rate ($1.6{\pm}0.2{\mu}m/min$), and low resistance ($9.42{\pm}0.4{\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$) compared to that from using Cu powder with a particle size greater than $5{\mu}m$. Also, from estimating the internal micro-strain of Cu films, the Cu coatings fabricated by using $2{\mu}m$ Cu particles exhibited a high micro-strain value of $3.307{\times}10^{-3}$. On the other hand, the strain of Cu coatings fabricated with $5{\mu}m$ particles was decreased to $2.76{\times}10^{-3}$. These results seem to show that the impacted Cu particles are compressed and flattened by shock waves, and that their bonding is associated with the high internal micro-strain caused by plastic deformation.

We present a novel cell deformability monitoring chip based on the digitally measured cell lysis rate which is dependent on the areal strain of the cell membrane. This method offers simple cell deformability monitoring by automated high-throughput testing system. We suggest the filter design considering the areal strain imposed on the cell membrane passing through the filter array having gradually increased orifice length. In the experiment using erythrocytes, we characterized the cell deformability in terms of average fracture areal strain which was $0.24{\pm}0.014\;and\;0.21{\pm}0.002$ for normal and chemically treated erythrocytes, respectively. We also verified that the areal strain of 0.15 effectively discriminates the deformability difference of normal and chemically treated erythrocytes, which can be applied to the clinical situation. We compared the lysis rates and their difference for the samples from different donors and found that the present chips can be commonly used without any calibration process. The experimental results demonstrate the simple structure and high performance of the present cell deformability monitoring chips, applicable to simple and cost-effective cell aging process monitoring.
In order to clarify the effect of C/Ti atom ratios(${\chi}$) on the deformation behavior of $TiC_{\chi}$ at high temperature, single crystals having a wide range of ${\chi}$, from 0.56 to 0.96, were deformed by compression test in a temperature range of 1183~2273 K and in a strain rate range of $1.9{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}5.9{\times}10^{-3}s^{-1}$. Before testing, $TiC_{\chi}$ single crystals were grown by the FZ method in a He atmosphere of 0.3MPa. The concentrations of combined carbon were determined by chemical analysis and the lattice parameters by the X-ray powder diffraction technique. It was found that the high temperature deformation behavior observed is the ${\chi}$-less dependent type, including the work softening phenomenon, the critical resolved shear stress, the transition temperature where the deformation mechanism changes, the stress exponent of strain rate and activation energy for deformation. The shape of stress-strain curves of $TiC_{0.96}$, $TiC_{0.85}$ and $TiC_{0.56}$ is seen to be less dependent on ${\chi}$, the work hardening rate after the softening is slightly higher in $TiC_{0.96}$ than in $TiC_{0.85}$ and $TiC_{0.56}$. As ${\chi}$ decreases the work softening becomes less evident and the transition temperature where the work softening disappears, shifts to a lower temperature. The ${\tau}_c$ decreases monotonously with decreasing ${\chi}$ in a range of ${\chi}$ from 0.86 to 0.96. The transition temperature where the deformation mechanism changes shifts to a lower temperature as ${\chi}$ decreases. The activation energy for deformation in the low temperature region also decreased monotonously as ${\chi}$ decreased. The deformation in this temperature region is thought to be governed by the Peierls mechanism.

Studies on the deformation behavior of materials subjected to impact loads have been carried out in various fields of engineering and industry. The deformation and fracture of members for these machines/structures are known to correspond to the intermediate strain-rate region. Therefore, for the structural design, it is necessary to consider the dynamic deformation behavior in these intermediate strain-rate ranges. However, there have been few reports with useful data about the deformation and fracture behavior at intermediate strain-rate ranges. Because the intermediate strain-rate region is located between quasi-static and high strain-rate regions, it is difficult to obtain the intermediate strain-rate using conventional reasonable test equipment. To solve this problem, in this study, the measurement reliability of the constructed drop-bar impact tensile test apparatus was established and the dynamic behavior at the intermediate strain-rate range of carbon steels was evaluated by utilizing the apparatus.
For the aerospace structural application of high-strength 2xxx series aluminum alloys, stress corrosion cracking(SCC) behavior in aggressive environments needs to be well understood. In this study, the SCC sensitivities of 2024-T62, 2124-T851 and 2050-T84 alloys in a 3.5 % NaCl solution are measured using a constant load testing method without polarization and a slow strain rate test(SSRT) method at a strain rate of 10-6 /sec under a cathodic applied potential. When the specimens are exposed to a 3.5 % NaCl solution under a constant load for 10 days, the decrease in tensile ductility is negligible for 2124-T851 and 2050-T84 specimens, proving that T8 heat treatment is beneficial in improving the SCC resistance of 2xxx series aluminum alloys. The specimens are also susceptible to SCC in a hydrogen-generating environment at a slow strain rate of $10^{-6}/sec$ in a 3.5 % NaCl solution under a cathodic applied potential. Regardless of the test method, low impurity 2124-T851 and high Cu/Mg ratio 2050-T84 alloys are found to have relatively lower SCC sensitivity than 2024-T62. The SCC behavior of 2xxx series aluminum alloys in the 3.5 % NaCl solution is discussed based on fractographic and micrographic observations.

Recently small punch creep testing (or miniature disc bend creep test) has received much attention through European collaborative research projects. This method was considered as a substitute for the conventional creep rupture testing by which the residual creep life is measured from the specimen taken out from serviced components of high temperature plants. It would be beneficial if the material creep properties such as power law creep constants as well as the creep rupture life can be measured from the small punch creep test. In this paper a method of assessing creep constants from the small punch creep testing is proposed. Finite element analyses were performed to investigate evolution of stress and strain rate at the weakest locations of the small punch creep specimen. Elastic-plastic-secondary creep analyses were carried out. The estimation equations for creep constants by the small punch creep testing are proposed based on the finite analysis results. Small punch creep tests were also performed with 9Cr steel and the accuracy of the proposed equation was verified by the experimental results.

Cold-expanded austenitic high nitrogen steel (HNS) was subjected to investigate the effects of grain size on the stress-controlled high cycle fatigue (HCF) as well as the strain-controlled low cycle fatigue (LCF) properties. The austenitic HNSs with two different grain sizes (160 and $292{\mu}m$) were fabricated by the different hot forging strain. The fine-grained (FG) specimen exhibited longer LCF life and higher HCF limit than those of the coarse-grained (CG) specimen. Fatigue crack growth testing showed that crack propagation rate in the FG specimen was the same as that in the CG specimen, implying that crack propagation rate did not affect the discrepancy of LCF life and HCF limit between two cold-expanded HNSs. Therefore, it was estimated that superior LCF and HCF properties in the FG specimen resulted from the retardation of the fatigue crack initiation as compared with the CG specimen. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the effective grain size including twin boundaries are much finer in the FG specimen than that in the CG specimen, which can give favorable contributions to strengthening.
The deformation behavior of a $Zr_{55}Al_{10}Ni_5Cu_{30}$ bulk metallic glass under tensile loading at different range of strain rates and temperatures between 680 K and 740 K were investigated. The variation in the deformation behavior of $Zr_{55}Al_{10}Ni_5Cu_{30}$ bulk metallic glass which resulted from the crystallization induced during testing was reported. The$Zr_{55}Al_{10}Ni_5Cu_{30}$ bulk metallic glass has showed either homogeneous or inhomogeneous deformation depending on test condition. It exhibited a maximum elongation of about 560 % at the condition of $407^{\circ}C{\times}\;10^{-4}/s$. The flow behavior exhibited three different types and the flow stress became lower at higher temperatures and lower strain rates. The increase of the time elapsed during heating resulted in the partial crystallization of bulk metallic glass phase and eventually strain hardening and brittle fracture.
Statement of problem: Injuries along with discomfort may result on the oral mucosa when non-rigid material is used as the major connector in construction of RPD, since nonrigid major connectors transmit unstable forces throughout the appliance. Titanium which recently draws attention as a substitute of Co-Cr had a difficulty in fabricating due to high melting temperature but the development of casting technique makes it possible to apply to the clinical case. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the rigidity and the castability of titanium upper major connector by design and make a comparison with Co-Cr major connectors which are widely used in clinical cases now. Material and methods: Casting was done using CP-Ti(Grage 2) (Kobe still Co., Japan) for the experimental groups, and 4 various designs namely palatal strap, U-shaped bar, A-P strap, and complete palatal plate were casted and 5 of each designs were included in each group. For the experimental group, Universal testing machine (Model 4502; Instron, Canton, Mass) was used to apply vertical torsional force vertically to the horizontal plane of major connector. In the second experiment, Vertical compressive force was applied to the horizontal plane of major connector. As a comparative group, Co-Cr major connector was equally manufactured and underwent the same experimental procedures Strain rate was measured after constant loading for one minute duration, and statistical analysis was done with SPSS ver.10.0 for WIN(SPSS. Inc. USA). From the one-way ANOVA and variance analysis (P=0.05), Scheffe's multiple comparison test implemented. Results: 1. Least amount of strain was observed with complete palatal plate followed by A-P bar, palatal bar, and the U-shaped bar having most amount of strain. 2. In all designs of titanium major connector, less strain rate was observed under compressive loading than under torsional loading showing more resistance to lateral force. 3. For titanium major connector, less strain rate was observed when the force is applied to the first premolar area rather than to the second molar area indicating more strength with shorter length of lever. 4. In Comparison of Co-Cr major connector with titanium major connector, palatal strap and U-shaped bar designs showed higher strength under torsional force that is statically significant, and under compressive force, no significant difference was observed expert for U-shaped bar. 5. In titanium major connector, complete palatal plate showed lowest success rate in casting when compared with the Co-Cr major connector. Conclusion: Above results prove that when using titanium for major connector, only with designs capable of generating rigidity can the major connector have almost equal amount of rigidity as Co-Cr major connector and show lower success rate in casting when compared with the Co-Cr major connector.
