  • At the present time when the limits of the magnetic storage systems appear, the holographic data storage (HDS) devices with high data transfer rate and high recording density are emerging as attractive candidates for next-generation optical storage devices. In this paper, to effectively improve the detection performance that is degraded by the two-dimensional inter-symbol interference under the HDS channel environment and the pixel misalignment, an iterative two-dimensional equalization scheme is proposed based on the contraction mapping theorem. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, for various holographic channel environments we measure the BER performance using computer simulation and compare the proposed one with the conventional threshold detection scheme, which verifies the superiority of the proposed scheme.

  • Electrode impedances are measured to quantitatively characterize the electrode-electrolyte or cell-electrode interfaces. In the case of high-density microelectrode arrays(MEAs) that have been developed for brainmachine interface applications, the characterization process becomes a repeating and time-consuming task; a system that can perform the measurement and analysis in an automated fashion with accuracy and speed is required. However, due to the large number of channels, parasitic capacitance and off-capacitance components of the switching system become the major factors that decreased the accuracy for the measurement of high impedance microelectrodes. Here we investigated the implementation of automatic impedance measurement system with analyzing the causes of possible measurement-related problems in multichannel switching configuration. Based on our multi-channel measurement circuit model, we suggest solutions to the problems and introduce a novel impedance measurement scheme using electro-mechanical relays. The implemented measurement system could measure |Z| < 700 $k{\Omega}$ of impedance in - 10% errors, which can be widely applicable to high density neural recording MEAs.

  • We present a new technique for achieving source separation when given only a single charmel recording. The main idea is based on exploiting the inherent time structure of sound sources by learning a priori sets of time-domain basis functions that encode the sources in a statistically efficient manner. We derive a learning algorithm using a maximum likelihood approach given the observed single charmel data and sets of basis functions. For each time point we infer the source parameters and their contribution factors. This inference is possible due to the prior knowledge of the basis functions and the associated coefficient densities. A flexible model for density estimation allows accurate modeling of the observation, and our experimental results exhibit a high level of separation performance for simulated mixtures as well as real environment recordings employing mixtures of two different sources. We show separation results of two music signals as well as the separation of two voice signals.

  • In order to improve the performance and simplify the structure of the conventional detectors in high density magnetic channels, a new equalizer based on bilinear recursive polynomial (BRP) models, which uses the previously estimated sequence, is proposed. The performance is compared with the conventional equalizers and the maximum likelihood sequence detection (MLSD) bound.

  • Recently, to utilize the limited bandwidth effectively, the concept of partial response (PR) signaling has widely been adopted in both the high-speed data transmission and high-density digital recording/playback systems such as digital microwave, digital subscriber loops, hard disk drives, digital VCR's and digital versatile recordable disks and so on. This paper is concerned with adaptive equalization of partial response channels particularly for the magnetic recording channels. Specifically we study how the PR channel equalizers work for different choices of desired or reference signals used for adjusting the equalizer weights. In doing so, we consider three different configurations that are actually implemented in the commercial products mentioned above. First of all, we show how to compute the theoretical values of the optimum Wiener solutions derived by minimizing the mean-squared error (MSE) at the equalizer output. Noting that this equalizer MSE measure cannot be used to fairly compare the three configurations, we propose to use the data MSE that is computer just before the final detector for the underlying PR system. We also express the data MSE in terms of the channel impulse response values, source data power and additive noise power, thereby making it possible to compare the performance of the configurations under study. The results of extensive computer simulation indicate that our theoretical derivation is correct with high precision. Comparing the three configurations, it also turns out that one of the three configurations needs to be further improved in performance although it has an apparent advantage over the others in terms of memory size when implemented using RAM's for the decision feedback part.

  • Transition jitter noise is one of major sources of detection errors in high density recording channels. Implementation complexity of the optimal detector for such channels is high due to the data dependency and correlated nature of the jitter noise. In this paper, two types of hardware efficient sub-optimal detectors are derived by modifying branch metric of Viterbi algorithm and applied to partial response (PR) channels combined with run length limited modulation coding. The additional complexity over the conventional Viterbi algorithm to incorporate the modified branch metric is either a multiplication or an addition for each branch metric in the Viterbi trellis.

  • Bit patterned media (BPM) storage is one of the promising technologies to overcome the limitations of the conventional magnetic recording. However, there are some problems in a high areal density BPM storage, inter-track interference, inter-symbol interference and noise which are severely degrading performance of the system with reducing the bit error rate. In this paper, we present a simple iterative two-dimensional equalizer based on the contraction mapping theorem to mitigate these adverse effects. Furthermore, we examine that the channel characteristics of the proposed two-dimensional equalizer satisfies the convergence conditions. In the simulation we demonstrate the bit separation characteristics of the one-dimensional equalizer and the two-dimensional equalizer and evaluate the BER performance of the proposed equalizer comparing with the conventional equalizers. According to the results of experiments, the proposed equalizer is an promising equalizer with maintaining proper complexity for a high areal density BPM storage.

  • In digital data transmission/storage systems, the compensation for channel distortion is conducted normally using a training sequence that is known a priori to both the sender and receiver. The use of the training sequences results in inefficient utilization of channel bandwidth. Sometimes, it is also impossible to send training sequences such as in the burst-mode communication. As such, a great deal of attention has been given to the approach requiring no training sequences, which has been called the blind equalization technique. On the other hand, to utilize the limited bandwidth effectively, the concept of partial response (PR) signaling has widely been adopted in both the high-speed transmission and high-density recording/playback systems such as digital microwave, digital subscriber loops, hard disk drives, digital VCRs and digital versatile recordable disks and so on. This paper is concerned with blind adaptive equalization of partial response channels whose transfer function zeros are located on the unit circle, thereby causing some problems in performance. Specifically we study how the problems of blind channel equalization associated with the PR channels can be improved. In doing so, we first discuss the existing methods and then propose new structures for blind PR channel equalization. Our structures have been extensively tested by computer simulation and found out to be encouraging in performance. The results seem very promising as well in terms of the implementation complexity compared to the previous approach reported in literature.

  • The CMA algorithmis most widely investigated blind algorithm and the most widely used one in practice. But, since nonlinear CM cost function have not closed form solution about the optimum weight. There have been difficultiesto analyze the CMA equalizer's theoretical performance. Recently, Zeng presents the notable theoretical resultabout the MSE of CM-minimizing estimators for the FIR linear channel in the presence of AWGN. Through this method, It wouldbe possible to campare the theoretical performance between CMA and Wiener equalizer in terms of MSE. In this paper, based on Zeng's method, we first calculate the theoretical MSE bound of CMA equalizer in partial response channel which is widely used in HDD, digital VCR such as high-density digital recording.playback systems. We confirmedthis result withthe computer simulation. Except this, we also performedthe theoretical and simulation analysis about the modified CMA equalizer, which was proposed to improve the performance of CMA equalizer in partial response channel. Finally, we compare and evaluate the performance analysis results between CMA and Modified CMA equalizer.
