  • Reducing media noise is a key to realizing high areal recording density. However, perpendicularly oriented Co-Cr films, stong candidates for high density recording media, have received little attention in terms of recording noise. We studied the noise characteristics of Co-Cr based alloy films by varying the compositionally separated structure. Co-Cr films with fine compositionally separated microstructure were observed to have low noise, which recording density dependence were negative or week. Studies on control of the microstructure and magnetic properties in combination with noise analysis are important to realize high density recording media.

  • In high density recording system, the recording head field on a medium should be focused in small bit area and should have a sufficient value to overcome the medium coercivity, which resulted in head saturation. In this paper, an efficient method to access the head field and field gradient considering head saturation is presented. The magnetic vector potential on the head surface is pre-calculated considering head saturation in several cases and accumulated into database. The head field on the recording media is easily produced solving Laplace equation using accessed magnetic vector potential boundaries. The computed head field is compared with a quantified magnetic force microscopy measurement.

  • Two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR) is treated as the next generation magnetic recording method, but because of its high channel bit error rate, it is difficult to use in practices. In this paper, we introduce a new writing method that can decrease the nonlinear media error effectively, and it can also achieve 10 Tb/$in^2$ of user bit density on a magnetic recording medium with 20 Teragrains/$in^2$.

  • In the playback signal processing of a digital magnetic recording system, the major signal processing processes consist of pulse equalization. pulse detection, clock recovery, and data recovery. Equalizer which compensates interference occurrde between pulses recorded in high density on a magnetic media is realized by pulse slimming method, and pulse detection by a integrating detector. Clock recovery from the detector output was accomplished by using PLL. and data recovery to reduce noise effects was carried out by utilizing the three sampling clocks recovered in clock recovery process. In this paper these processes are implemented in hardware and its performance is evaluated by experimenting with a commercial DAT. It was found that the playback signal processor proposed is suitable to the practical high density magnetic recording system.

  • As the recording density of digital magnetic recording channels increased, the nonlinear distortion caused by inadequate rise-times, demagnetizing field, and overwrite effect during the recording process becomes significant, resulting in limitation on the recording rate. In this paper, a new method for identifying the nonlinear distortion in hihg-density magnetic recording channel using and i.i.d. (independent, identically distributed) inut is described. The proposed method does not require the operatin of large-size matrix inversion which are necessary for the conventional method, and it enables us to estimate nonlinear parameters transition shifts, which can be used to compensate the nonlinear distortion, is demonstrated by computer simulations.

  • Misalignment of recording head position results in inter-track interference (ITI), which is a primary factor limiting radial(track) density in current digital magnetic channels. This paper proposes a multi- channel adaptive PRML for digital high-density recording channels, and compares it with the conventional single-channel PRML in the presence of ITI for the per- formance evaluation. Simulation results show that the proposed method removes ITI effectively when heal-misalignment occurs, then improving its performance significantly as compared with the single- channel PRML. As a result, it is confirmed that multi-channel adaptive PRML is well suited for high-density recording in digital magnetic channels.

  • Seedlayers with low surface energy which increases the density of nucleation sites in the initial growth region of the recording layer deposited on them was studied to reduce grain size in recording layer. The seedlayer with low surface energy was so effective to attain finer grain in magnetic upper-layers. The Ni-Fe-O intermediate layer with low surface energy was found to be effective in reduction of grain size as well as magnetic cluster size of Co-Cr-Ta-Pt recording layer. Furthermore, the reduction of grain size in Co-Cr-Ta-Pt recording layer on Ni-Fe-O intermediate layer with low surface energy led to decrease the noise level in the high recording density region.

  • The frequency of the recording current and the rotating speed of the recording media are Increase for the high densities in perpendicular magnetic recording system with high conductive pole tip head and soft magnetic under-layer. In the paper, the frequency Induced eddy current and velocity induced eddy currents are analyzed by non-linear 3-dimensional finite element analysis. It it turned out that the frequency induced eddy current decreases the amplitude of the recording fields, whereas the velocity induced eddy current only distorts the distribution of the recording fields in the recording media.

  • CoCrPt alloy films are one of the most promising candidates for high-density perpendicular magnetic recording media due to their strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and high coercivity [1]. In order to achieve high-density magnetic recording media, it is essential to characterize the magnetoelastic properties since experimental and theoretical research has revealed a significant magnetoelastic contribution to the magnetic properties in magnetic thin films. • Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) is one of the most promising candidates for high density magnetic storages over 1 Tb/$in^2$ areal density. Since the precise light delivery to the head is a key factor to realize HAMR application, it is required to establish the light delivery using micro laser module and micro actuator. For the careful control of micro actuator, a laser module was designed including laser diode, optical fiber, collimating lens, and fabricated V-groove substrate. In addition, the basic aligning method between the laser module and HAMR head was studied by the detection of current change in photo diode due to the amount of reflected light from the head.
