Reinforced concrete is inherently a durable composite material. When properly designed for the environment to be exposed and carefully constructed, reinforced concrete is capable of giving maintenance-free performance. However, unintentionally using improper materials such as non-washed sea sand having much salt together with poor controlled quality, or the concrete are placed in highly severe environment such as marine atmosphere, the corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete becomes one of the most significant concerns of concrete. The purpose of this experimental research is to evaluate the performance of corrosion inhibitors for normal strength and high strength concrete, and to propose desirable measures for controlling corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete. Test specimens in normal strength and high strength concrete were made with and without corrosion inhibitors. The accelerated corrosion test for reinforcing steel in concrete was adopted in accordance with JCI-SC3, which required the periodic 20 cycles for 140 days. One cycle includes 3 days for the wetting condition of $65^{\circ}C$ and $90\%$ RH, and 4 days for the drying condition of $15^{\circ}C\;and\;60\%$ RH. It was observed from the test that corrosion inhibitors in normal strength concrete and high strength concrete showed excellent corrosion resistance for reinforcing steel in concrete, but the silica fume in high strength concrete was found to have a negligible corrosion resistance if not used with corrosion inhibitors, since the chloride corrosion threshold limit in concrete containing silica fume without corrosion inhibitor was found to be considerably smaller than that of the case with corrosion inhibitor.
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of conditions for quenching and/or tempering on the corrosion and hydrogen diffusion behavior of ultra-strong automotive steel in terms of the localized plastic strain related to the dislocation density, and the precipitation of iron carbide. In this study, a range of analytical and experimental methods were deployed, such as field emission-scanning electron microscopy, electron back scatter diffraction, electrochemical permeation technique, slow-strain rate test (SSRT), and electrochemical polarization test. The results showed that the hydrogen diffusion parameters involving the diffusion kinetics and hydrogen solubility, obtained from the permeation experiment, could not be directly indicative of the resistance to hydrogen embrittlement (HE) occurring under the condition with low hydrogen concentration. The SSRT results showed that the partitioning process, leading to decrease in localized plastic strain and dislocation density in the sample, results in a high resistance to HE-induced by aqueous corrosion. Conversely, coarse iron carbide, precipitated during heat treatment, weakened the long-term corrosion resistance. This can also be a controlling factor for the development of ultra-strong steel with superior corrosion and HE resistance.
High performance Nd-Fe-B magnets can be manufactured by both sintering and hot deformation. The corrosion behaviors of the magnets prepared by the two processes were compared. Effect of microstructure on the corrosion resistance of Nd-Fe-B magnets was also investigated. A neutral salt spray test (NSS) was performed for the different-processed magnets. The weight losses of the samples after the corrosion test were measured. The corrosion microstructures were observed using a scanning electron microscope. It shows that the corrosion resistance of hot deformed magnets is much better than that of the sintered ones because the grain size and the distribution of Nd-rich phases of the hot deformed magnets are much finer and more uniform than those of the sintered ones. The different microstructure between the sintered and the hot deformed magnets causes the different corrosion behavior.

The effect of Cr addition to high Mn steel on flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC) behavior in a neutral aqueous environment was evaluated. For comparison, two types of conventional ferritic steels (API X70 steel and 9% Ni steel) were used. A range of experiments (electrochemical polarization and impedance tests, weight loss measurement, and metallographic observation of corrosion scale) were conducted. This study showed that high Mn steel with 3% Cr exhibited the highest resistance to FAC presumably due to the formation of a bi-layer scale structure composed of an inner Cr enriched Fe oxide and an outer Mn substituted partially with Fe oxide on the surface. Although the high Mn steels had the lowest corrosion resistance at the initial corrosion stage due to rapid dissolution kinetics of Mn elements on their surface, the kinetics of inner scale (i.e. Cr enriched Fe oxide) formation on Cr-bearing high Mn steel was faster in dynamic flowing condition compared to stagnant condition. On the other hand, the corrosion scales formed on API X70 and 9% Ni steels did not provide sufficient anti-corrosion function during the prolonged exposure to dynamic flowing conditions.
Novel Ni- and Fe-based alloys are developed to impart improved mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The designed alloys are manufactured as a powder and deposited on a steel substrate using a high-velocity oxygen-fuel process. The coating layer demonstrates good corrosion resistance, and the thus-formed passive film is beneficial because of the Cr contained in the alloy system. Furthermore, during low-temperature heat treatment, factors that deteriorate the properties and which may arise during high-temperature heat treatment, are avoided. For the heattreated coating layers, the hardness increases by up to 32% and the corrosion resistance improves. The influence of the heat treatment is investigated through various methods and is considered to enhance the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the coating layer.

Molten Carbonate Fuel cell is a promising new type electric power generation system which can achieve high efficiency, lower matrrial cost and high operating temperature Making internal reforming possible. Although the development of the MCEC is progressing rapidly toward commercialization, two important tchological problems such as dissolution of NiO cathode and not corrosion of metallic separator plate must be resolved. Because MCFC is operated at $650^{\circ}C$ and the electrolyte is very corrosive, corrosion-resistance of separator plated against oxidation abd molten carbonate is required. Al-coating on separator material for corrosion-resistance was carried out by painting, thermal spraying. hot dipping and vacuum vapour deposition. The corrosion of Al-coated STS 316S and 316L in molten carbonate at $700^{\circ}C$was studied. Vacuum vapour deposition and thermal spraing for Al-coating on STS 310S and 316L were the most effective methods for protecting thestainless steel corrosion in molten carbonate.

Phosphate based inhibitor is playing a decisive role in inhibiting the corrosion of steel rebar in chloride condition. We have used different amount of ammonium phosphate monobasic (APMB) as corrosion inhibitor in mortar with different amount of chloride ions. The compressive strength, flexural strength, open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization resistance (PPR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy were performed to access the effect of inhibitor on corrosion resistance. As the amount of inhibitor is increased, the compressive strength increased. The electrochemical results show that as the amount of inhibitor and chloride ions are increased, the total impedance and corrosion resistance of steel rebar increased attributed to the formation of the stable oxide films onto the steel rebar surface. It is suggested that APMB can work in high concentration of chloride ions present in concrete where phosphate ion helps in formation of stable and protective phosphate based oxide film.
In this paper, electrochemical and microstructural characteristics of nickel-plated Alloy 600 were investigated in order to identify the performance of electroless Ni-plating on Alloy 600 in high-temperature aqueous condition with the comparison of electrolytic nickel-plating. For high temperature corrosion test of nickel-plated Alloy 600, specimens were exposed for 770 hours to typical PWR primary water condition. During the test, open circuit potentials (OCP's) of all specimens were measured using a reference electrode. Also, resistance to flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) test was examined in order to check the durability of plated layers in high-velocity flow environment at high temperature. After exposures to high flow rate aqueous condition, the integrity of surfaces was confirmed by using both scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). For the field application, a remote process for electroless nickel-plating was demonstrated using a plate specimen with narrow gap on a laboratory scale. Finally, a practical seal design was suggested for more convenient application.
Effects of high-temperature environment and low-temperature environment on corrosion behaviours of 18Cr stainless steels (type 304L, type 441) in simulated selective catalytic reduction (SCR) environments were studied using weight loss test in each environment and rust analysis. With time to exposure to the high-temperature environment, type 441 was more resistant to corrosion than type 304L due to both higher diffusivity of Cr and lower thermal expansion coefficient in α-iron. The former provides a stable protective Cr2O3 layer. The latter leaded to low residual stress between scale and steel, reducing the spallation of the scale. With time to exposure to the low-temperature environment, on the other hand, type 304L was more resistant to corrosion than type 441. The lower resistance of type 441 was caused by Cr-depleted zone with less than 11% formed during the pre-exposure to a high-temperature environment, unlike type 304L. It was confirmed by results from the crevice corrosion test of sensitised 11Cr steel. Hence, to achieve higher corrosion resistance in simulated SCR environments, ferritic stainless steels having lower thermal expansion coefficient and higher diffusivity of Cr but containing more than 18% Cr are recommended.
Corrosion failure of petrochemical facilities is one of the difficulties in maintenance, since operating conditions of crude oil production, storage, and refinement are very aggressive. UNS N08810, which has been used for crude oil transportation pipes and storage tanks in petrochemical industries, shows good resistance to general corrosion and localized corrosion in several environments. Among its environments, UNS N08810 showed better corrosion resistance in fuel gas containing sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid and sulfur. However, ductility and toughness at high temperature over about $500^{\circ}C$ were greatly reduced due to microstructural change. In general, welding process is the representative method to join the parts in industrial components. Because the alloy by welding can be sensitized and corroded, the manufacturing process should be controlled. In this work, UNS N08810 was used and heat treatment conditions including solution and stabilization treatments were controlled. Oxalic acid etch test by ASTM A262 Practice A was done to evaluate the qualitative sensitization in room temperature. Huey test by ASTM A262 Practice C was done to evaluate the intergranular corrosion rate in boiling 65% $HNO_3$ solution. Also, the microstructure by thermal history was analyzed. Experimental alloy showed high intergranular corrosion rate and its corrosion mechanism was elucidated.
