  • Local buckling can be ignored for hot-rolled ordinary strength steel equal angle compression members, because the width-to-thickness ratios of the leg don't exceed the limit value. With the development of steel structures, Q420 high strength steel angles with the nominal yield strength of 420 MPa have begun to be widely used in China. Because of the high strength, the limit value of the width-to-thickness ratio becomes smaller than that of ordinary steel strength, which causes that the width-to-thickness ratios of some hot-rolled steel angle sections exceed the limit value. Consequently, local buckling must be considered for 420 MPa steel equal angles under axial compression. The existing research on the local buckling of high strength steel members under axial compression is briefly summarized, and it shows that there is lack of study on the local buckling of high strength steel equal angles under axial compression. Aiming at the local buckling of high strength steel angles, this paper conducts an axial compression experiment of 420MPa high strength steel equal angles, including 15 stub columns. The test results are compared with the corresponding design methods in ANSI/AISC 360-05 and Eurocode 3. Then a finite element model is developed to analyze the local buckling behavior of high strength steel equal angles under axial compression, and validated by the test results. Following the validation, a finite element parametric study is conducted to study the influences of a range of parameters, and the analysis results are compared with the design strengths by ANSI/AISC 360-05 and Eurocode 3.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical characteristics of plain and steel fiber high strength concrete under uniaxial and biaxial loading condition. A number of plain and steel fiber high strength concrete cubes having 28 days compressive strength of 82.7Mpa (12,000psi) were made and tested. Four principal compression stress ratios, and four fiber concentrations were selected as major test variables. From test results, it is shown that confinement stress in minor stress direction has pronounced effect on the strength and deformational behavior. Both of the stiffness and ultimate strength of the plain and fiber high strength concrete increased. The maximum increase of ultimate strength occurred at biaxial stress ratio of 0.5 in the plain high strength concrete and the value were recorded 30 percent over than the strength under uniaxial condition. The failure modes of plain high strength concrete under uniaxial compression were shown as splitting type of failure but steel fiber concrete specimens under biaxial condition showed shear type failure.

  • This research performed strength improvement analysis after evaluating strength characteristics by estimated temperatures to evaluate the real time strength performance of 50 to 80 MPa high performance concrete equipped with heat resistance, and the results are as follows. The lesser W/B and the lesser target slump flow value difference, compression strength was shown to increase, and the more curing temperature becomes, the strength increased accordingly. According to the correlation review result of strength improvement analysis by estimated temperature change performed using logistic analysis model, the compression strength value predicted with logistic curve expression and the compression strength value measured in experiment were shown to have similar correlation, and the strength improvement analysis value by logistic model was shown to be estimated good when W/B is high.

  • The pilot tests for the development of biaxial failure envelope of high strength concrete of reactor containments were performed. To apply biaxial loads to concrete, the plate specimens were used. The technical difficulties encountered on the development of a suitable biaxial test setup were discussed. To decide the optimum thickness of plate specimen, the nonlinear finite element analyses using ABAQUS were performed for a 1/8 model of cylindrical specimen(${\Phi}150{\times}300$) and four 1/4 models of plate Specimens ($200{\times}200{\times}T$(=30, 50, 60, 70)mm) under uniaxial compression. Analytical values and test data of relative strength ratio between those specimens with different geometric shapes were also compared. The various test data were obtained under uniaxial compression, uniaxial tension, and biaxial compression and then the stress-strain responses were plotted. The test data indicated that the strength of concrete under biaxial compression, $f_1/f_2=-1/-1$, is 15 percent larger than that under uniaxial compression and the poisson's ratio of concrete is 0.16. Teflon pads employed to eliminate friction between test specimen and loading platens showed an excellent effect under biaxial compression.

  • The bending and compression strength properties of two types Rhus verniciflua specimens, which made of no heat-treated wood and heat-treated wood for urushiol extraction, were measured. The heat-treated specimens were finger-jointed with either resorcinol-phenol or polyurethane resin adhesives, and the vertical type bending strength property was also measured in these specimens. The results obtained are as follows ; 1. The correlation coefficient between the compression strength and specific gravity in the specimens of no heat-treated and heat-treated wood was high. However there was no difference in compression strength property as affected by heat treatment. 2 The correlation coefficient between the bending strength and specific gravity in the specimens of no heat-treated and heat-treated wood was also high. However, there was no difference in bending strength property as affected by heat treatment. 3 The bending test showed high correlation between modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture for the specimens made of no heat-treated and heat-treated wood. However, there was no difference in bending strength property between the specimens made of heat-treated and no heat-treated wood. 4. The efficiencies of bending strength test on the finger-jointed specimens of heat-treated wood with resorcinol-phenol and polyurethane resin adhesives were 0.85, 0.81. respectively.

  • Purpose : The purpose of the study is to investigate the quality and relevance of back strength or chest compression which is applied by isotonic exercise of hip joint. Methods : Subjects were 37 students who participated in the BLS course and accepted the informed consent from December 7 to 8, 2012. During CPR performance, back strength was measured by the researcher. CPR was used the manikin for practical training with using PC, conducted by standard CPR for 2 minutes, Quality of chest compressions included average chest compression depth, rate, and recoil ratio. Results : Back strength (kg) is related to the chest compression depth (mm) (r =.746, p <.001). The high quality CPR is the most important factor so high quality is full chest recoil of chest compression and chest compression depth (mm) (${\beta}$=.831, p <.001). In this study, chest compression rate and recoil ration were not influenced by back muscle strength. Conclusion : It is necessary to implement the CPR program to improve physical strength and effective performance of CPR.

  • When a railway train enters a tunnel at high speed, a compression wave is formed in front of the train and propagates along the tunnel. The compression wave subsequently emerges from the exit of the tunnel, which causes an impulsive noise. In order to estimate the magnitudes of the noises and to effectively minimize them, the characteristics of the compression wave propagating in a tunnel must be understood. In the present paper, the experimental and analytical investigations on the attenuation and distortion of the propagating compression waves were carried out using a model tunnel. This facility is a kind of open-ended shock tube with a fast-opening gate valve instead of a general diaphragm. One-dimensional flow model employed in the present study could appropriately predict the strength of the compression wave, Mach number and flow velocity induced by the compression wave. The experimental results show that the strength of a compression wave decreases with the distance from the tunnel entrance. The decreasing rate of the wave strength and pressure gradient in the wave is strongly dependent on the strength of the initial compression wave at the tunnel entrance.

  • This paper firstly proposed high performance composite columns for cold-region infrastructures using ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) and ultra-high strength steel (UHSS) Q960E. Then, 24 square UHPC-filled UHSS tubes (UHSTCs) at low temperatures of -80, -60, -30, and 30℃ were performed under axial loads. The key influencing parameters on axial compression performance of UHSS were studied, i.e., temperature level and UHSS-tube wall thickness (t). In addition, mechanical properties of Q960E at low temperatures were also studied. Test results revealed low temperatures improved the yield/ultimate strength of Q960E. Axial compression tests on UHSTCs revealed that the dropping environmental temperature increased the compression strength and stiffness, but compromised the ductility of UHSTCs; increasing t significantly increased the strength, stiffness, and ductility of UHSTCs. This study developed numerical and theoretical models to reproduce axial compression performances of UHSTCs at low temperatures. Validations against 24 tests proved that both two methods provided reasonable simulations on axial compression performance of UHSTCs. Finally, simplified theoretical models (STMs) and modified prediction equations in AISC 360, ACI 318, and Eurocode 4 were developed to estimate the axial load capacity of UHSTCs at low temperatures.

  • This study is a basic experiment on quality management of the compression strength of high strength concrete, aiming. at quality management of high strength mass concrete by giving the temperature hysteresis of the mass test pieces to managerial test pieces. Different from ordinary concrete, high strength concrete generally shows the temperature high rising caused by hydration heat inside the concrete. It is known that, in mass concrete, thermal stress occurs due to the difference in temperature between the inside and the outside, which causes a significant difference in compression strength between structure beams and managerial test pieces. It is also reported that there is a large difference between the compression strength of cylindrical managerial test pieces of standard underwater curing and the strength of structure beam concrete. Thus, this study made concrete test pieces in an optimal mix ratio for each strength level, and also created thermal insulation curing box and managerial test pieces. Then it carried out comparative analysis in relation to core strength and suggested equipment and a technique that can control the strength of high strength concrete mass more conveniently and accurately.

  • In order to find effective linerboard compositions for the corrugated fibreboard containers for apples, we have evaluated the strength and the cost effectiveness of the various linerboards and corrugated fibreboard containers. From the results, we suggest SC240, WLK210 or SK180 for the outer liners, M180 to M250 for the mediums, and K2200 or Al80 for the inner liners, respectively. Furthermore, we recommend two cost effective types of corrugated fibreboard compositions, SC240/S120/S120/M160/A180 for the white face liners, and SK180/M180/S120/M180/A180 for the color face liners. Evidence has been presented to support the conclusion that the new high compression strength corrugated fibreboard containers have better performance in the compression and bursting strength tests, while reducing material costs by thirty four percents.
