  • Objective: This study reports the effect of Hyungbangjihwang-tang-gami as a treatment for Soyang-in patients with chronic diarrhea. Methods: We treated three male patients with chronic diarrhea who did not improve after taking herbal medicine, as determined by zang-fu (organ) pattern diagnosis. After changing our approach to a Sasang constitution, we prescribed Hyungbangjihwang-tang-gami and assessed the effect by the frequency or form of defecation. Results: The patients' complaints worsened when they were administered a herbal medicine unsuited to their Soyang constitutions, which caused an exuberance of Yang. Changing the herbal medicine to Hyungbangjihwang-tang-gami improved their symptoms. Conclusions: This study suggested that Soyang-in patients may have side effects when administered unsuitable herbs, even if they were diagnosed using zang-fu (organ) pattern diagnosis. When we treat patients, we have to consider their Sasang constitution, as well as the zang-fu (organ) pattern diagnosis.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to explore and describe how two patients diagnosed with type II diabetes mellitus were successfully cured solely through the use of herbal medicine. Methods: The patients were administered the herbal medicine to reduce symptoms of stress-induced fever with dryness. The prescribed herbal medicines included Yangkyuksanwha-tang, Hyungbangsabaek-san, Hyungbangjihwang-tang, and Hyungbangdojeock-san. Results: The therapeutic outcomes showed that all numerical levels of symptoms such as thirst, polyuria, weight loss, blood sugar, and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) recovered to within normal levels. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that our medical treatment of type II diabetes mellitus diagnosed as Sogal was a valid treatment. We hope that our team's new evidence and findings will shed positive light on the treatment of type II diabetes mellitus using herbal medicine.

  • Objective This case report is to show the effectiveness of Sasang Constitutional Medicine treatment on the patient with delayed encephalopathy after acute carbon monoxide intoxication. Methods A 40-year-old female patient diagnosed with delayed encephalopathy after carbon monoxide poisoning 2 weeks ago before visiting our hospital. The patient suffered gait disturbance and cognitive disorder. She was identified as Soyangin and treated with Sasang constitutional Herbal Medicine(Yangkyuksanwha-tang and Hyungbangjihwang-tang). Improvement of symptoms was evaluated through Korean Version of Mini Mental Status Examination score(MMSE-K), Modified Barthel Index(MBI), Manual Muscle Testing(MMT), Range of Motion(ROM) and Hand Function Test. Results After 7 weeks of treatment, total score of MMSE-K increased from 0 to 26, the patient could walk by herself and had no trouble carrying out her daily life. Conclusions This case showed the effectiveness of Sasang constitutional medicine treatment for delayed encephalopathy after acute carbon monoxide intoxication.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to give an account of the effects of Korean herbal medicine therapy which is based on Sasang constitutional medicine for two patients who were suffering from Yin Exhausted Syndrome. 2. Mothods Patients were diagnosed as having Soyangin Yin Exhausted Syndromes by Physical characteristics, posture, and symptoms and were evaluated with an interview and laboratory test after Sasang constitutional medication. 3. Result After the Sasang constitutional medications of Hyungbangsabek-san(荊防瀉白散), Hyungbangjihwang-tang(荊防地黃湯), Juhryungchajunja-tang(猪笭車前子湯), Shihochungjang-tang(柴胡淸腸湯) were used diarrhea and other symptoms were improved. 4. Conclusions These case studies show an efficient result of using Sasang traditional medicine in the treatment of Yin Exhausted Syndrome.

  • Hyungbangjihwang-Tang (HT), an Oriental herbal formula, has been known to play a role which helps to recover vigor of human in the Orient. In this study, antibacterial substance (HTI) was purified from the ethyl-acetate extracts of HT by using $SiO_2$ column chromatography and HPLC, and the antibacterial effects of HTI were investigated. By using the CLSI broth micro-dilution assay, the activity of HTI was evaluated against human pathogenic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains including the clinical isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The results demonstrated that HTI showed broad spectrum antibacterial activities against all bacterial strains tested. In conclusion, HTI is an interesting new molecule for its potential in anti-infective drug discovery and for future studies on activity-structure relationship through analysis of its chemical structure.

  • Hyungbangjihwang-Tang (HT), an Oriental herbal formula, has been known to play a role which helps to recover vigor of human in the Orient. In this study, antifungal substance (HTI) was purified from the ethyl-acetate extracts of HT by using $SiO_2$ column chromatography and HPLC, and the antifungal effects of HTI and its mode of action were investigated. By using a broth micro-dilution assay, the activity of HTI was evaluated against fungi. HTI showed antifungal activities without hemolytic effect against human erythrocytes. To confirm antifungal activity of HTI, we examined the accumulation of intracellular trehalose as stress response on toxic agents and effect on dimorphic transition in Candida albicans. The results demonstrated that HTI induced the accumulation of intracellular trehalose and exerted its antifungal effect by disrupting the mycelial forms. To understand its antifungal mode of action, cell cycle analysis was performed with C. albicans, and the results showed HTI arrested the cell cycle at the S phase in yeast. The present study indicates that HTI has considerable antifungal activity, deserving further investigation for clinical applications.

  • Objective: In this care report, we address a case of a Parkinson's disease patient with nausea and vomiting. Methods: A patient was treated with Korean medicine therapies including herbal medication (Hyungbangjihwang-tang, Boikyangwie-tang), acupuncture, and electroacupuncture during 35 days of hospitalization. We evaluated the improvements of symptoms by checking the number of vomiting episodes and the presence of nausea. Results: During 35 days of Korean medicine treatment, there was improvement in patient's symptoms. The frequency of vomiting had decreased, and the nausea had decreased and not appeared for the last 7 days. Conclusions: This study suggested that Korean medicine therapies might be effective in relieving gastrointestinal symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
