  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of heat treatment on the start-up performance for anaerobic hydrogen fermentation of food waste. The result showed that hydrogen production was $0.61{\pm}0.31$ mol $H_2$/mol hexose with heat-treatment of food waste at $70^{\circ}C$ for 60 min whereas it was $0.36{\pm}0.31$ mol $H_2$/mol hexose without heat-treatment of one. The heat treatment of food waste enhanced hydrogen yield due probably to the increase of hydrolysis as well as the decrease of non-hydrogen fermentation microorganisms. The removal efficiency of carbohydrate in reactors regardless of heat treatment of food waste maintained over 90%. The hydrogen conversion efficiency from food waste was 1.7-6.3% with heat-treatment whereas it was 0.7-4.5% without heat-treatment. At the time of switchover from batch to continuous operation, lactate concentration was high compared to the n-butyrate concentration in anaerobic hydrogen fermentation reactor without heat-treatment. Anaerobic hydrogen fermentation of food waste with heat treatment was stable in start-up periods because lactate concentration could be maintained at a relatively low compared to n-butyrate concentration due to the decrease of non-hydrogen fermentation microorganisms.

  • This investigation is the result of a structural analysis by FEM and test to define the deformation mode of the Up-Right type Vacuum-Cleaner's Nozzle-Cover. In FEM analysis, 3 different conditions were considered separately, such as (1) Compressive force by Belt tension, (2) Friction heat between Belt and shaft and (3) Compressive force combined with heat. Throughout FEM analysis it was found that the deformation was caused by heat and it was proved through a simulation test with a real product.

  • The fin and tube heat exchanger using a two-port tube has in air-conditioner heat exchanger because heat transfer performance. This study investigates the feasibility of a fin and tube heat exchanger using two-port copper tube by mechanical expansion. The optimum size of the tube-expanding bullet for the heat exchanger using two-port tube was through numerical calculation. The heat exchanger using a two-port tube was fabricated by mechanical expansion, and the heat exchanger performance was evaluated condensation and evaporation experiments. Compared to the heat exchanger of a conventional circular tube, the pressure drop per unit length of the heat exchanger with a two-port tube decreased. Compared to the heat exchanger using a conventional circular tube, the overall heat transfer coefficient of heat exchanger with a two-port tube increased up to 13% in the case of condensation, and up to 25% in the case of evaporation. The two-port tube heat exchanger outperforms conventional heat exchanger for air conditioner with a inner grooved circular tube.

  • In this study, the performance of the single heat source system and the hybrid system was comparatively analyzed. Case 1 is a ground heat source system, and Case 2 is a water heat source system. Case 3, a hybrid system, reduced the capacity of the ground heat source and applied a water heat source as an auxiliary heat source, and Case 4 was composed of a system that applied a water heat source as an auxiliary heat source to the ground heat source system. As a result of the simulation, in case 3, energy consumption was reduced by up to 2.67% compared to ground sources for cooling. In Case 4, COP was improved by up to 10.02% compared to ground sources during cooling, and EST was calculated to be 2.42℃ lower. During heating, 0.83% was improved compared to the water heat source. At this time, the EST was calculated to be 2.25℃ higher than the water heat source.

  • A lever type $NO_2$ micro gas sensor was fabricated by MEMS technology. In order to heat up the gas sensing material to a target temperature, a micro heater was built on the gas sensor. The sensing material laid on the heater and electrodes and did not contact with the silicon base to minimize the heat loss to the silicon base. The electric power to heat up the gas sensor to a target temperature was measured. The temperature distribution of micro gas sensor was analyzed by a CFD program. The predicted electric power of micro heater to heat up the sensing material to the target temperature showed a good agreement with the measured data. The design of micro gas sensor could be modified to show more uniform temperature distribution and to consume less electric power by optimizing the layout of micro heater and electrodes.

  • The first specimens were sampled across the depth of roll products processed by rapid heating and cooling of the roll, namely, differential heat treatment. The second samples were taken from the non-heat treated roll at different depths. The samples were heat treated following the same temperature history as that at each corresponding location in the roll where the samples were taken. Consequently, both specimens showed the similar microstructure and mechanical properties (tensile, impact and fatigue strength etc.)

  • The existence of solutions in Besov spaces for nonlinear heat equations having transcendental nonlinearity: $$\frac{\partial}{{\partial}t}u-{\Delta}u=F(u)$$ is investigated. In particular, it is proved the local existence and blow-up phenomena of the solutions in Besov spaces for nonlinear heat equations corresponding to two transcendental nonlinear functions $F(u){\equiv}{\mid}u{\mid}e^{u^2}$ and $F(u){\equiv}e^u$ of rapid growth.

  • The fin and tube type heat exchangers widely used in air conditioners have been developed to improve on the heat transfer performance and compactness. This study presents the new type of tube for the heat exchanger to improve the heat transfer performance by increasing the heat transfer area per unit volume in the air-conditioner heat exchanger. The new type tube can be used for mechanical expansion facility, due to the two-port copper tube. Numerical calculation shows that the heat exchanger using the two-port copper tube outperforms the conventional heat-exchanger using a circular copper tube, in terms of the increased heat transfer coefficient and higher pressure drop. The calculation results were experimentally validated and are in agreement with the experimental results. Compared to the heat exchanger using a conventional circular tube, the heat exchanger with a two-port tube increased the heat transfer coefficient up to 21%, and the pressure dropped up to 16%.
