  • Heat treatment is one of the critical manufacturing processes that determine the quality of a product. This paper presents experimental and analytical results for the quench of a ring gear in stagnant oil. The goal of this study is to develop heat transfer predicting model in an overall analysis of the quenching process. Thermal conductivities which are dependant on temperatures and convection coefficients which are obtained by inverse method are used to develop the accurate heat transfer model. The results of heat transfer model have a good agreement with experimental results.

  • This paper presents a sole application of boundary element method to the conjugate heat transfer problem of thermally developing laminar flow in a thick walled pipe when the fluid velocities are fully developed. Due to the coupled mechanism of heat conduction in the solid region and heat convection in the fluid region, two separate solutions in the solid and fluid regions are sought to match the solid-fluid interface continuity condition. In this method, the dual reciprocity boundary element method (DRBEM) with the axial direction marching scheme is used to solve the heat convection problem and the conventional boundary element method (BEM) of axisymmetric model is applied to solve the heat conduction problem. An iterative and numerically stable BEM solution algorithm is presented, which uses the coupled interface conditions explicitly instead of uncoupled conditions. Both the local convective heat transfer coefficient at solid-fluid interface and the local mean fluid temperature are initially guessed and updated as the unknown interface thermal conditions in the iterative solution procedure. Two examples imposing uniform temperature and heat flux boundary conditions are tested in thermally developing region and compared with analytic solutions where available. The benchmark test results are shown to be in good agreement with the analytic solutions for both examples with different boundary conditions.

  • This paper addresses the optimal design of dividing wall distillation column which is rapidly applied in a variety of chemical processes over recent several years because of its high energy saving efficiency. A general dividing wall column model which can cope with the heat transfer through the dividing wall is developed using rigorous computer simulation. Based on the simulation model, the effects of the internal recycle flow distribution around the dividing wall and the heat transfer across the dividing wall on overall system performance are investigated. An improved method is suggested to utilize the heat transfer through the wall to optimal column design. The suggested method is compared with the existing method via. simulation study and shows more improved energy saving result. Several control strategies for the divided wall column are tested and the optimal control strategy is propose

  • This study presents a numerical procedure to optimize the shape of dimple surface to enhance turbulent heat transfer in a rectangular channel. The response surface based optimization method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer with shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. The dimple depth-to-dimple print diameter ratio, channel height-to-dimple print diameter ratio, and dimple print diameter-to-pitch ratio are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer related term and friction loss related term with a weighting factor. full factorial method is used to determine the training points as a mean of design of experiment. The optimum shape shows remarkable performance in comparison with a reference shape.

  • In this study, the computer simulation for the heat transfer in pulse combustion water heater is performed. The attention is focused to the effects of the installation of corebuster in the flue tube on heat transfer. The energy equations are established for both wall and gas side in the combustion chamber, flue way, exhaust chamber and muffler, and the numerical calculation is executed. Zone method takes longer computer calculation time compared with semi-zone method. Semi-zone method is chosen for numerical calculation. As a result of this study, it is found that the installation of the core buster in flue tube increases total heat transfer. It is also found that the total heat transfer is increased with the increasing of the ratio of the cross section area of corebuster to that of the flue tube. However, the heat transfer effect is negligible for the area ratio above 0.5.

  • We determined the transfer coefficient through the analysis of three dimensional temperature distribution in comparison with the measured temperature on the piston in the turbocharged diesel engine. And we analyzed the thermal stress and the thermal deformation with that heat transfer coefficient by using finite element method. According to this results, we found that maximum tempetature range of the piston appeared at the upper part of the piston crown and that the heat transfer coefficient of the upper part of the piston is smaller than that of the lower one. It showed that the maximum thermal deformation is shown at the edge of the upper part of piston and that the maximum thermal stress was shown on the lower part of the piston crown. Finally, we defined the method of determination of a piston heat transfer analysis by using measured temperature on the piston and analyzed temperature with finite element method.

  • The phase change heat transfer has been applied to the processes of machines as well as of manufacturing. The cycle in a heat exchanger includes the phase change phenomena of coolant for air conditioning, the solidification in casting process makes use of the characteristics of phase change of metal, and the welding also proceeds with melting and solidification. To predict the phase change processes, the experimental and numerical approaches are available. In the case of numerical analysis, the Enthalpy method is most widely applied to the phase change problem, comparing to the other numerical methods, i.e. the Equivalent Specific Heat method and the Temperature Recovery method. It's because that the Enthalpy method is accurate and straightforward. The Enthalpy method does not include any correction step while the correction of final temperature field is inevitable in the Equivalent Specific Heat method and the Temperature Recovery method. When the temperature field is to be used in the calculation, however, there must be converting process from enthalpy to temperature in the calculation scheme of Enthalpy method. In this study, an improved method for the Equivalent Specific Heat method is introduced whose method dose not include the correction steps and takes temperature as an independent variable so that the converting between enthalpy and temperature does not need any more. The improved method is applied to the solidification process of pure metal to see the differences of conventional and improved methods.
