  • Allowable stress design(ASD) method has been widely used to design steel structures such as boiler and heat recovery steam generator(HRSG) of power plant. However, many researchers are recently intrested in road and resistance factor design(LRFD) method which may take the place of ASD. In this work, the weight calculation of steel structure was compared when ASD and LRFD were applied respectively. For the calculation of weight of steel structure, computer program was developed and applied to obtain beam weight. Using this program and GTSTRUDL, structural design program, weight of steel structure is calculated. As a result of weight calculation, maximum 5.4% of weight reduction is achieved among examples of this study by applying LRFD comparing with the result of ASD, and those results quite dependent on the applied load and member classification.

  • HRSG, which is one of main components of the combined cycle power plant,is composed of an inlet duct, a main body and casing, an outlet duct and a stack. It is important to design HRSG wihtin the allowable noise limit. For this purpose, it is necessary to analyze and predict the noise reduction and radiation at HRSG. In this paper, the technology for the noise prediction at each part of HRSG has been based on the empirical and field data, and also the HRSG noise prediction program has been developed. In order to verify the developed technology and program a field test is conducted. The results of noise prediction show good agreement with the measured.

  • New and more efficient propulsion systems are required for LNG carriers. One of the proposed systems is a combination of a gas turbine with a heat recovery steam generator. This system constitutes a novel approach, which needs to be analyzed by system analysis and risk assessment to compensate for the lack of field experience. Of specific concern is the high pressure fuel supply system. This paper describes the dispersion and fire analysis performed to identify for safety and design improvement of proposed system.

  • The purpose of this study is not only to evaluate the stress behavior of tubes in superheater in HRSG during the load change operation but also to find root causes of failure from stress behavior. Firstly, temperature during operation was collected to perform stress analysis from actual HRSG. Part load and full load stress analysis which can be represented as the whole load change operations were performed using commercial finite element software. The possibility that can lead to tubes failure is found by stress analysis and its results is compared with metallurgical mircrostructure of failed tube which was taken from actual HRSG.

  • It is usually the contractual responsibility of HRSG(Heat Recovery Steam Generator) supplier to limit combustion turbine exhaust noise at cogeneration sites. Thus, it is necessary to predict the noise level from HRSG at the stage of preliminary design. HRSG is usually composed of inlet duct, main casing, outlet duct, stack. To satisfy the noise limit level, additional equipments are sometimes required - duct shroud, silencer. We develop algorithms for predicting the noise emission from all these equipments of HRSG units. For the convenience of user, we develop the GUI window version program, named NP-HRSG program. To evaluate the accuracy of this program, predicted noise levels from a real HRSG model are compared with measured data. Through this comparison, we observe that the maximum error is just about 3dB.

  • Reversible solid oxide fuel cell (ReSOC) system was integrated with waste steam for electrical energy storage in distributed energy storage application. Waste steam was utilized as external heat in SOEC mode for higher hydrogen production efficiency. Three system configurations were analyzed to evaluate techno-economic performance. The first system is a simple configuration to minimize the cost of balance of plant. The second system is the more complicated configuration with heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). The third system is featured with HRSG and fuel recirculation by blower. Lumped models were used for system performance analyses. The ReSOC stack was characterized by applying area specific resistance value at fixed operating pressure and temperature. In economical assessment, the levelized costs of energy storage (LCOS) were calculated for three system configurations based on capital investment. The system lifetime was assumed 20 years with ReSOC stack replaced every 5 years, inflation rate of 2%, and capacity factor of 80%. The results showed that the exergy round-trip efficiency of system 1, 2, 3 were 47.9%, 48.8%, and 52.8% respectively. The high round-trip efficiency of third system compared to others is attributed to the remarkable reduction in steam requirement and hydrogen compression power owning to fuel recirculation. The result from economic calculation showed that the LCOS values of system 1, 2, 3 were 3.46 ¢/kWh, 3.43 ¢/kWh, and 3.14 ¢/kWh, respectively. Even though the systems 2 and 3 have expensive HRSG, they showed higher round-trip efficiencies and significant reduction in boiler and hydrogen compressor cost.

  • The present study is to analyze an integral test, BETHSY test 6.9c, which represent loss of RURS accident under mid-loop operation. Both the pressurizer manway and the steam generator outlet plenum manway are opened as vent paths in order to prevent the system from pressurization by removing the steam generated in the core. The main purposes are to gain insights into the physical phenomena and identify sensitive parameters. Assessment of capability of CATHARE2 prediction can be established the effective recovery procedures using the code in an actual plant. Most of important physical phenomena in the experiment could be predicted by the CATHARE2 code. The peak pressure in the upper plenum is predicted higher than experimental value by 7 kPa since the differential pressure between the pressurizer and the surge line is overestimated. The timing of core uncovery is delayed by 500 seconds mainly due to discrepancy in the core void distribution. It is demonstrated that openings of the pressurizer manwey and the steam generator manway can prevent the core uncovery using only gravity feed injection. Although some disagreements are found in the detailed phenomena, the code prediction is considered reasonable for the overall system behaviors.

  • A parallel slide gate valve (PSGV) is located between the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and the steam turbine in a combined cycle power plant (CCPP). It is used to control the flow of steam and runs with repetitive operations such as startups, load changes, and shutdowns during its operation period. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the fatigue damage and the structural integrity under a large compressive thermal stress due to the temperature difference through the valve wall thickness during the startup operations. In this paper, the thermal-structural analysis and the fatigue life evaluation of a 16-inch PSGV, which is installed on the HP steam line, is performed according to the fatigue life assessment method described in the ASME B&PVC VIII-2; the method uses the equivalent stress from the elastic stress analysis.

  • The purpose of this study is to apprehend the behavior of exhaust gas flow from gas turbine during part load operation in Heat Recovery Steam Generator. As a first step of this work, internal flow characteristics according to HRSG types were examined by CFD analysis. Next step, tube temperature according to gas turbine 53% and 100% load conditions were calculated by results of CFD and those were compared with temperature data gathered from real plant. Finally, thermal performance due to part load operation was calculated to estimate the influence of heat transfer in superheater. In addition, new type of device is suggested to eliminate the uneven temperature distribution of tubes during part load operation.

  • A thermodynamic simulation method is developed for the process design and the performance evaluation of the gas turbine in IGCC power plant. The present study adopts four clean coal gases derived from four different coal gasification and gas clean-up processes as IGCC gas turbine fuel, and considers the integration design condition of the gas turbine with ASU(Air Separation Unit). In addition, the present simulation method includes compressor performance map and expander choking models for considering the off-design effects due to coal gas firing and ASU integration. The present prediction results show that the efficiency and the net power of the IGCC gas turbines are seperior to those of the natural gas fired one but they are decreased with the air extraction from gas turbine to ASU. The operation point of the IGCC gas turbine compressor is shifted to the higher pressure ratio condition far from the design point by reducing the air extraction ratio. The exhaust gas of the IGCC gas turbine has more abundant wast heat for the heat recovery steam generator than that of the natural gas fired gas turbine.
