  • Blast Furnace Slag is good for enhancing the qualities of concrete such as reducing hydration heat increasing fluidity, long-term strength and durability, but it has some problems: construction time is increased or the rotation rate of form is decreased due to low development of early strength. In this study, an aqueous alkali solution for alkali activated reaction was obtained by the electrolysis using concentrated water discharged from seawater desalination process. Prepared aqueous alkali solution was applied to produce mortars using blast furnace slag. The results can be summarized as follows : For the mortar, compressive strength was decreased below 2% of NaOH and increased below 6% of NaOH. And compressive strength was increased gradually with increasing NaOCl contents. However, NaCl contents of mortars caused a decrease of 28days strength above early strength.

  • Water management is considered to be one of the main issues to be addressed for the performance improvement of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. For good water management, the detailed information on the water distribution inside an operating PEM fuel cell should be available to main an adequate level of hydration in the PEM While avoiding performance decline due to liquid rater flooding. For the PEM fuel cell to be commercially viable as vehicle applications, the flooding on the cathode side should be minimized during the fuel ceil operation. In this study to investigate cathode flooding and its relation with temperature distribution in flow channels, visualization study was performed on the cathode side of a PEM fuel cell. For the direct visualization of temperature field and water transport in cathode flow channels, a transparent cell was designed and manufactured using quartz window. Water transport and its two-phase flow characteristics in flow channels were investigated experimentally. Also, the visualization of temperature distribution In cathode flow channels was made by using IR camera. Results indicated that the temperature rise near the exit of cathode flow channel was found. It is found that this area corresponds to the flooding area from both temperature and flooding visualization results It is expected that this study can effectively contribute to get the detailed data on water transport linked with heat management during the operation of a PEM fuel cell

  • Recently, the development and field applications of Ternary Blended Cement(TBC), where blast furnace slag and fly ash are recycled in Ordinary Portland Cement(OPC) in order to obtain improvements in the durability and heat of hydration reduction performance in large scale civil structures, have been increasing. Also, there are continuing efforts by construction companies to reduce the construction time with the aim of reducing construction costs. Therefore, there is a need to improve the performance of TBC, which has a relatively slow early strength development. In order to improve the early strength of TBC mortar, the compressive strength, SO3 content, and SEM analysis was determined in this study on mortar with the fineness and content of blast furnace slag and anhydrite regulated. As a result, to secure the early strength of TBC mortar, using blast furnace slag with a fineness of approximately $4,200cm^2/g$, adding 3.5% anhydrite with a fineness of approximately $10,000cm^2/g$, and managing the $SO_3$ content to roughly 3.72% was found to provide the most outstanding early strength properties.

  • Carbon nanotube(CNT) is one of the promising construction materials to produce concrete with high strength and durability by adding in the concrete mixtures from various researches. Also, its superior heat conductivity can be one of the options to develop self-heating concrete. In this research, the fundamental study was conducted to investigate mechanical properties and microstructures of cement pastes and mortars by strength tests and porosity measurement with several CNT additions, which were 0 wt%, 0.115 wt%, 0.23 wt% and 0.46 wt% of CNT-cement ratio. Compressive and flexural strength test were conducted at 3, 7 and 28 days, and pore characteristics were investigated by mercury intrusion porosimetry. SEM-EDS and Thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) were conducted to prove the hydration product types and CNT dispersion in the cement matrix. As a result, even though high amount of CNT additions were caused worse performance, mixtures with 0.115 wt% of CNTs developed the similar performance with plain mixture.

  • In this study, it was investigated compressive strength generation of concrete using high volume mineral admixture obtaining fundamental data for the application of concrete structure in construction field. For this, it was evaluated compressive strength with unit binder contents($310{\sim}410kg/m^3$), replacement ratio of mineral admixture(70~90%), unit water contents($140{\sim}150kg/m^3$) and curing temperature in the normal strength range. Also, after producing mock-up structure, hydration heat and compressive strength generation was evaluated to examine properties in the concrete member. In case of concrete using a large amount of industrial byproducts which was reviewed in this study, it is possible to secure compressive strength more than 24MPa at age 28days with about $13^{\circ}C$ ambient temperature of curing condition and that is considered to be applied to structure at construction site.

  • In this study, to examine the application of cast-in-place of high-flowable and high-strength concrete, an experimental study on the lateral pressure of a formwork was preformed. The experiment specimens, which have different casting height and casting speed were prepared. The lateral pressure and the change of temperature from test specimens were obtained. The maximum lateral pressure was shown to lateral pressure of fresh concrete. Immediately after placing, the lateral pressure starts to decrease and, after 12 hours, it showed a stabilization. The decreased tend of the lateral pressure was similar with normal-strength concrete, which appears stabilization after 3~4 hours from casting completion. The more casting speed is fast, the more maximum lateral pressure is high, but pressure reduction with the lapse of time was nearly similar. In addition, it was found that there was no direct relation between the hydration heat and the lateral pressure reduction.

  • CFT (Concrete-Filled Tube) is a type of steel column comprised of steel tube and concrete. Steel tube holds concrete and the concrete inside tube takes charge of compressive load. This study presents structural performance of the CFT column which has 73~100 MPa high strength concrete inside. Fluidity, mechanical compression, pump pressure test in flexible pipe were conducted for understanding properties of the high strength concrete. Material properties were achieved by various experimental tests, such as slump, slump flow, air content, U-box, O-Lot, L-flow. In addition, mock-up tests were conducted to monitor concrete filling, hydration heat, compressive strength. From construction sites in Sang-am dong and University of Seo-kang, long-term behaviors could be effectively predicted in terms of ACI 209 material model considering elastic deformation, shrinkage and creep.

  • In this study, blast furnace slag powder was used in concrete to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and to recycle industrial waste. Blast furnace slag powder is a byproduct of smelting pig iron and is obtained by rapidly cooling molten high-temperature blast furnace slag. The powder has been used as an admixture for cement and concrete because of its high reactivity. Using fine blast furnace slag powders in concrete can reduce hydration heat, suppress temperature increases, improve long-term strength, improve durability by increasing watertightness, and inhibit corrosion of reinforcing bars by limiting chloride ion penetration. However, it has not been used much due to its low compressive strength at an early age. Therefore, this study evaluates the effects of steam curing for increasing the initial strength development of concrete made using slag powder. The relationship between compressive strength, SEM observations, and XRD measurements was also investigated. The concrete made with 30% powder showed the best performance. The steam curing seems to affect the compressive strength by destroying the coating on the powder and by producing hydrates such as ettringite and Calcium-Silicate-Hydrate gel.

  • In this study, the mechanical property and durability of improved bond performance mortar shotcrete was investigated. Mortar shotcrete was prepared by replacing coarse aggregate with 100% fine aggregate in the shotcrete mixture proportion proposed in the road construction standard specification. OPC, GGBFS and anhydrite were used as binders, and polymer powder was substituted for 1% and 2% of binder for improving bond property. From the experimental results, it was found that the compressive strength decreased with increasing polymer addition, but the bond strength increased. The addition of polymer to mortar shotcrete also reduced the drying shrinkage and improved the resistance to carbonation. Initial hydration heat of mortar shotcrete decreased with the addition of polymer, and it was judged that the initial compressive strength decreased.

  • Joint spacing is a potent influence in increasing the long term performance of jointed concrete pavement slabs through the control of tensile stress, sealant failure and Load Transfer Efficiency (LTE). Internal Joint Spacing is an empirical and fixed method therefore this study will present the optimum joint spacing considerations depending on various climactic conditions. Calculating the optimum joint spacing eliminates random cracking due to the effect of the environmental loads such as the early behavior of drying shrinkage and heat hydration. Optimum joint spacing is calculated so as not to cause pavement distress by the deterioration of LTE by long term pavement movement. This study shows that the provisional joint spacing is 6-8m. Pavement Distress Prediction Models show that pavement distress has no effect on joint spacing of 8m.
