  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to determine the optimum addition rate of SBR latex through the evaluation of durability and strength of SBR latex applied soil pavement. Formerly used materials such as fly ash and cement in soil pavement had resulted in decreased durability due to micro crack by heat of hydration and shrinkage crack in winter. However, that agglutinated polymers help adhesion to aggregate increased comes up with preventing the crack opening when the number of capillary tubes of SBR latex get decreased in the hydration process of cement. Therefore, in this study, it is suggested that the evaluation of the field applicability of soil pavement be conducted through the performance lab test in terms of strength increment, adhesion improvement, and crack resistance based on SBR latex addition rate. METHODS : In order to evaluate the field applicability of soil pavement, SBR latex was added 0 to 3% by 1% increment, with fixed cement contents of 3% and 5%. The resistance of shear failure and crack of soil pavement were evaluated by performing the uniaxial compressive strength test and indirect tensile strength test at -20 and $20^{\circ}C$, respectively. RESULTSCONCLUSIONS : It was found out that from both tests, resistance of shear failure and crack were improved with increment of curing time, and especially more than 2% of SBR latex addition rate and 5% cement content gave better results.

  • In early-age concrete, volumetric deformations due to thermal expansion and moisture transfer are restrained by various boundary conditions, and then restraint stresses occur in proportion to developed stiffness. With increase of the age, these stresses are gradually relieved by significant relaxation behavior of early-age concrete. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the stress relaxation in order to analyze the behavior of early-age concrete more accurately. In this paper, we propose a unified algorithm which combines a relaxation model with hydration model, heat conduction model, micropore structure formation model, moisture diffusion model and mechanical properties development model and develop a finite element program based on the algorithm. The program is applied to evaluate stress development if a temperature-stress test machine (TSTM) specimen and a massive concrete structure, and then validity of the program is discussed and evaluated.

  • This paper presents the experimental study on crack control of core-wall placed with 700kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ Ultra high strength concrete. The thermal sensors were installed into the core-walls prior to the concrete casting to measure the heat of hydration and atmospheric temperature whose difference might cause the initial crack. Several curing schemes were taken for each basement floor 8 thru 6 to examine the influence of curing method on the crack width, total crack length and the number of crack occurred. This paper demonstrates that the proper curing scheme have a great favorable effect on the initial crack control on the structural elements with noticiable reduction in crack width.

  • In order to obtain improved concrete mix proportion on nuclear power plant structures, the properties of normal concrete is compared with self-compacting concrete. In addition, various mixes of self-compacting concrete utilizing melaminic acid based admixture is mutually compared and estimated. Because existing normal concrete mixes might occur high temperature in concrete structure, A new multi-component concrete, which declines hydration heat, is demanded. Therefore, in this study, the possibility of manufacturing self-compacting concrete is verified and what influences melaminic acid and various powders have on the properties of self-compacting concrete are investigated.

  • Mass concreting in cold weather environment should be focused on the control of thermal crack caused by high hydration heat rather than curing method for protecting from frost damage at early age because the thermal stress have much influence on the quality of structure placed in cold weather. Therefore, in this paper, the control of thermal crack of mass concrete in cold weather environment are dealt with preparing the practice plan for mass concrete and placing the concrete according to the plactice plan. According to the results, we can obtain good quality mass concrete without thermal crack caused by the difference of temperature between inner part and outer part.

  • Concrete structure that has been constructed in real field is on multi-axial stress state condition. After placing of concrete, hydration heat and shrinkage of concrete can cause various stress conditions with respect to the restraint level and condition. So, to predict the early age behavior of concrete structure, multi-axial material model is required and microplane model is acceptable. Recently, many studies have been performed on the microplane model, but the model developed up to now has been related to hardened concrete that material property is constant with concrete age. So, it is inappropriate to apply this model immediately to analyze the early age behavior of concrete. In this study, microplane model that can predict early age behavior of concrete was developed and cracking analysis using that was performed to describe cracking behavior for massive concrete sturucture.

  • Yeoju-Bo is a large massive concrete structures that require the reduction of working period of construction. In this study, we optimized the mix proportion of internal/external concrete and physical properties like compressive strength, semi adiabatic temperature rise in laboratory. And we also performed thermal analysis to verify the thermal cracking. Lastly we measured the hydration heat and the thermal cracking in site to verify the safety of massive concrete structure.

  • In this study, high-strength concrete mixtures were made with blast-furnace slag of 50% and 70% replacement level to evaluate material properties including compressive strength development, adiabatic temperature rise, autogenous shrinkage and chloride-ion migration coefficient. Test results showed that the use of high percentage blast-furnace slag in high-strength concrete can reduce heat of hydration and chloride-ion migration coefficient, result in control thermal cracking and improve durability performance especially under high corrosive environment.

  • Fly Ash in concrete is known to be effective in improving workability, the reduction of heat of hydration, increasing the long-term compressive strength, and improving durability. Recently, fly ash is consedered an essential material for the high-strength concrete. In this paper, investigations for the strength and workability characteristics was carried out when fly ash was used in the high-strength concrete. As the result, fly ash was effective in increasing the long-term compressive strength, but the short-term compressive strength was gradually decreased with increating fly ash contents. And also the use of superplasticzers was required for providing the proper workability when fly ash contents were increased. The optimum content of fly ash was about 10%.
