  • An exhausted heat recovery system for a small gas engine cogeneration plant was investigated. The system was designed and built in a 300 kW class cogeneration demonstrative system. The basic performance was tested depending on load variation, and installed to a field site as a bottoming heat and power supply system. The exhaust gas heat exchangers (EGHXs) in shell-and-tube type and shell-and-plate type were tested. The entire efficiency of the cogeneration system was estimated between 85 to 90% under the 100% load condition, of which trend appears higher in summer due to the less thermal loss than in winter. Power generation efficiency and thermal efficiency was measured in a range of 31~33% and 54~57%, respectively.

  • Co-combustion of syngas in an existing boiler can be one of the options for replacing conventional fossil fuel with alternative fuels such as waste and biomass. This study is aimed to investigate effects of syngas cocombustion on combustion characteristics and boiler efficiency. An experimental study was performed for a pilot-scale furnace with 4 oil burners. Tests were conducted with mixture-gas as a co-combustion fuel and heavy oil as a main fuel. The mixture-gas was composed of 15% CO, 7% $H_2$, 3% $CH_4$ and 75% $N_2$ for simulating syngas from air-blown gasification. And LHV of the mixture-gas was 890 kcal/$Nm^3$. Temperature distribution in the furnace and flue gas composition were measured for various heat replacement ratio by the mixture gas. Heat loss through the wall was also carried out through heat & mass balance calculation, in order to obtain informations related to boiler efficiency. Experimental results show that similar temperature distribution and flue gas composition can be obtained for the range of 0~20% heat replacement by syngas. NOx concentration is slightly decreased for higher heat replacement by the syngas because fuel NOx is decreased in the case. Meanwhile, heat loss is a bit decreased for higher heat replacement by the syngas, which implies that boiler efficiency can be a bit decreased when syngas co-combustion is applied to a boiler.

  • Improvement in the energy efficiency has been studied of the desiccant cooling system by applying a vapor compression type heat pump to modify the system into a hybrid system. The cycle simulation was performed and the results were compared between a reference desiccant cooling system composed of a desiccant rotor, a sensible rotor and a regenerative evaporative cooler, and a hybrid desiccant cooling system with the sensible rotor being replaced by a heat pump. Though the electric consumption increases as much as the compressor power consumption, the total cooling capacity increases and the thermal energy input decreases by the addition of the heat pump. Therefore, the total energy efficiency can be improved if the increase in the electric consumption can be compensated with the increase in the cooling capacity and the decrease in the thermal energy input. The results showed that the total energy efficiency is optimized at a certain heat pump capacity. When the heat from the CHP plant is used for the thermal energy input, the energy consumption of the hybrid system is reduced by 20~30% compared with the reference system when the heat pump shares 30~40% of the total cooling capacity.

  • The improvement of energy recovery is mandatory to decrease consumption of fossil fuels and to minimize negative impacts on the environment which originates from large cooling and heating demand. The absorption heat pump technology has a large potential for energy saving in this respect. Absorption heat pump is a means to upgrade waste heat without addition of extra thermal energy. In this study, resorption heat pump for energy recovery has been investigated using methanol-glycerine. The simulated calculation of theoretical thermal efficiency was performed based on the thermodynamic properties of the working fluid over various operating conditions. The thermal efficiency of higher than 0.4 was obtained by raising industrial waste heat, $70{\sim}80^{\circ}C$, by $40^{\circ}C$ in this system.

  • Since the temperature of waste heat source is relatively low, it is difficult to maintain high level of efficiency in power generation when the waste heat recovery is employed in the system. In an effort to improve the thermal efficiency and power output, use of ammonia-water mixture as a working fluid in the power cycle becomes a viable option. In this work, the performance of ammonia-water mixture based Rankine cycle is thoroughly investigated in order to maximize the power generation from the low temperature waste heat. In analyzing the power cycle, several key system parameters such as mass fraction of ammonia in the mixture and turbine inlet pressure are studied to examine their effects on the system performance. The results of the cycle analysis find a substantial increase both in power output and thermal efficiency if the fraction of ammonia increases in the working fluid.

  • In this study, we introduce a model that satisfies energy efficiency and economical efficiency by introducing and demonstrating cogeneration generators in industrial complexes using various actual data collected at the site. The proposed model is composed of three scenarios, ie, full - time operation, scenario operated according to demand, and a fusion type. In this study, the power generation profit and surplus thermal energy are measured according to the operation of the generator, and the thermal energy is traded according to the demand of the customer to calculate the profit and loss including the heat and evaluate the economic efficiency. As a result of the study, it is relatively profitable to reduce the generation of the generator under the condition that the electricity rate is low and the gas rate is high, while the basic charge is not increased. On the contrary, if the electricity rate is high and the gas rate is low, The more you start up, the more profit you can see. These results show that even a cogeneration power plant with a low economic efficiency due to a low "spark spread" has sufficient economic value if it can sell more than a certain amount of heat energy from a nearby customer and adjust the applied power through peak management.

  • Semiconductor inspection equipment makes components using materials with insulating properties for functional inspection including current and voltage of semiconductor parts. A representative insulating material is plastic, and plastic is made of a component through an injection process using plastic pellet. When plastic pellets contain excessive moisture, problems such as performance degradation and product surface defects occur. To prevent this, pre-drying is essential, and the heat convective type is the most applied. However, the heat convective type has a problem of low consumption efficiency and a long drying time. Recently, many studies have been conducted on a drying method using microwaves due to high energy efficiency. In this paper, drying was performed using a microwave for drying PC pellets. Energy consumption and drying efficiency analyzed by set up an experimental apparatus of heat convective, microwave, and hybrid(heat convective + microwave) types. It was confirmed that energy consumption and drying efficiency were high when drying using microwaves, and it was confirmed that the hybrid method improved drying performance compared to the heat convective method. It is expected that the research results of this paper can be used as basic data for drying plastic pellets using microwave.

  • The performance of heat exchanger as an energy conversion device can be described by the available energy output and efficiency. The efficiency is defined as the ratio of the available energy output and the exergy of the heat source flow. In present study, a counterflow heat exchanger is analyzed and the conditions to obtain maximum output is numerically determined. As a result, the avilable energy obtained by the cold flow can be determined as functions of the heat capacity flow, the cold flow inlet temperature and the heat transfer capacity of heat exchanger. At the maximum output condition the heat capacity flow of the cold fluid is larger than that of the heat source, and the heat capacity flow ratio is equal to the ratio of the cold flow inlet temperature and the atmospheric temperature. And the avilable energy output increases as the heat transfer capacity of the heat exchanger become larger, but in the economic point of view there is also an optimum heat transfer capacity for a given heat source flow.

  • Recently, various technologies for the fuel efficiency improvement are being developed. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the heat exchanging performance of a exhaust heat recirculation device and to propose a model with optimized performance. The device has been designed to warm up engine coolant as quickly as possible using wasted exhaust heat. To achieve these goals, heat transfer characteristics has been analyzed using CFD for the flow direction effect and in/out location effect of coolant. A method improving the effectiveness of heat exchange has been proposed. As a result, the highest efficiency in heat exchange was observed on condition that exhaust heat affects the coolant directly with a separate flow path between exhaust gas and coolant and that coolant flow rate is relatively low.

  • Recently a novel cycle named organic flash cycle (OFC) has been proposed which has improved potential for power generation from low-temperature heat sources. This study carries out thermodynamic performance analysis of OFC using various working fluids for recovery of low-grade heat sources in the form of sensible energy. Special attention is focused on the optimum flash temperature at which the exergy efficiency has the maximum value. Under the optimal conditions with respect to the flash temperature, the thermodynamic performances of important system variables including mass flow ratio, separation ratio, heat addition, specific volume flow rate at turbine exit, and exergy efficiency are thoroughly investigated. Results show that the exergy efficiency has a peak value with respect to the flash temperature and the optimum working fluid which shows the best exergy efficiency varies with the operating conditions.
