Diagenetic black chert nodules occur in the Paleozoic dolostone in Susan, Jecheon, Korea. They reacted with dolomite to form alteration rim around the nodules during the contact metamorphism probably related to the intrusion of biotite granite. In the earlier stage of alteration, talc and calcite replaced both the chert and dolomite, which were subsequently replaced by tremolite. Significant mass of tremolite occurs along the horizon enriched with chert nodules. Scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy of the tremolite specimens revealed the elongated morphology of diverse aspect ratios coexisting in several mm scale. Non-asbestiform tremolite columns were also common as well as asbestiform fibrous bundles. Quantitative estimation of asbestos should be more cautious for naturally occurring materials because all the tremolite particles in the outcrop are not asbestiform. The occurrence of asbestiform tremolite in the Susan area indicates that a combination of chert-bearing dolostone, heat source, and aqueous fluids is one of the geological environments for the formation of asbestiform tremolite.

Temperature-dependent hydrolysis behaviors of aqueous U(VI) species were investigated with time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) in the temperature range from 15 to $75^{\circ}C$. The formation of four different U(VI) hydrolysis species was measured at pHs from 1 to 7. The predominant presence of $UO{_2}^{2+}$, $(UO_2)_2(OH){_2}^{2+}$, $(UO_2)_3(OH){_5}^+$, and $(UO_2)_3(OH){_7}^-$ species were identified based on the spectroscopic properties such as fluorescence wavelengths and fluorescence lifetimes. With an increasing temperature, a remarkable decrement in the fluorescence lifetime for all U(VI) hydrolysis species was observed, representing the dynamic quenching behavior. Furthermore, the increase in the fluorescence intensity of the further hydrolyzed U(VI) species was clearly observed at an elevated temperature, showing stronger hydrolysis reactions with increasing temperatures. The formation constants of the U(VI) hydrolysis species were calculated to be $log\;K{^0}_{2,2}=-4.0{\pm}0.6$ for $(UO_2)_2(OH){_2}^{2+}$, $log\;K{^0}_{3,5}=-15.0{\pm}0.3$ for $(UO_2)_3(OH){_5}^+$, and $log\;K{^0}_{3,7}=-27.7{\pm}0.7$ for $(UO_2)_3(OH){_7}^-$ at $25^{\circ}C$ and I = 0 M. The specific ion interaction theory (SIT) was applied for the extrapolation of the formation constants to infinitely diluted solution. The results of temperature-dependent hydrolysis behavior in terms of the U(VI) fluorescence were compared and validated with those obtained using computational methods (DQUANT and constant enthalpy equation). Both results matched well with each other. The reaction enthalpies and entropies that are vital for the computational methods were determined by a combination of the van't Hoff equation and the Gibbs free energy equation. The temperature-dependent hydrolysis reaction of the U(VI) species indicates the transition of a major U(VI) species by means of geothermal gradient and decay heat from the radioactive isotopes, representing the necessity of deeper consideration in the safety assessment of geologic repository.
To broaden the understanding of classical Cepheid structure, evolution and atmospheres, we have extended our continuing secret lives of Cepheids program by obtaining XMM/Chandra X-ray observations, and Hubble space telescope (HST) / cosmic origins spectrograph (COS) FUV-UV spectra of the bright, nearby Cepheids Polaris, ${\delta}$ Cep and ${\beta}$ Dor. Previous studies made with the international ultraviolet explorer (IUE) showed a limited number of UV emission lines in Cepheids. The well-known problem presented by scattered light contamination in IUE spectra for bright stars, along with the excellent sensitivity & resolution combination offered by HST/COS, motivated this study, and the spectra obtained were much more rich and complex than we had ever anticipated. Numerous emission lines, indicating $10^4$ K up to ${\sim}3{\times}10^5$ K plasmas, have been observed, showing Cepheids to have complex, dynamic outer atmospheres that also vary with the photospheric pulsation period. The FUV line emissions peak in the phase range ${\varphi}{\approx}0.8-1.0$ and vary by factors as large as $10{\times}$. A more complete picture of Cepheid outer atmospheres is accomplished when the HST/COS results are combined with X-ray observations that we have obtained of the same stars with XMM-Newton & Chandra. The Cepheids detected to date have X-ray luminosities of log $L_X{\approx}28.5-29.1$ ergs/sec, and plasma temperatures in the $2-8{\times}106$ K range. Given the phase-timing of the enhanced emissions, the most plausible explanation is the formation of a pulsation-induced shocks that excite (and heat) the atmospheric plasmas surrounding the photosphere. A pulsation-driven ${\alpha}^2$ equivalent dynamo mechanism is also a viable and interesting alternative. However, the tight phase-space of enhanced emission (peaking near 0.8-1.0 ${\varphi}$) favor the shock heating mechanism hypothesis.
Three combinations of molecular chaperones from Escherichia coli (i.e., DnaK-DnaJ-GrpE-GroEL-GroES, GroEL-GroES, and DnaK-DnaJ-GrpE) were overproduced in E. coli BL21, and their in vitro stabilizing effects on a nitrile hydratase (NHase) were assessed. The optimal gene combination, E. coli groEL-groES (ecgroEL-ES), was introduced into Rhodococcus ruber TH3. A novel engineered strain, R. ruber TH3G was constructed with the native NHase gene on its chromosome and the heterologous ecgroEL-ES genes in a shuttle plasmid. In R. ruber TH3G, NHase activity was enhanced 37.3% compared with the control, TH3. The in vivo stabilizing effect of ecGroEL-ES on the NHase was assessed using both acrylamide immersion and heat shock experiments. The inactivation behavior of the in vivo NHase after immersion in a solution of dynamically increased concentrations of acrylamide was particularly evident. When the acrylamide concentration was increased to 500 g/l (50%), the remaining NHase activity in TH3G was 38%, but in TH3, activity was reduced to 10%. Reactivation of the in vivo NHases after varying degrees of inactivation was further assessed. The activity of the reactivated NHase was more than 2-fold greater in TH3G than in TH3. The hydration synthesis of acrylamide catalyzed by the in vivo NHase was performed with continuous acrylonitrile feeding. The final concentration of acrylamide was 640 g/l when catalyzed by TH3G, compared with 490 g/l acrylamide by TH3. This study is the first to show that the chaperones ecGroEL-ES work well in Rhodococcus and simultaneously possess protein-folding assistance functions and the ability to stabilize and reactivate the native NHases.

In this study, characteristics of biological hydrogen production and microbial distribution were investigated with the wastewater of Tofu manufacturing process. Comparison of hydrogen production was conducted with acid or base pre-treatment of the wastewater. Maximum hydrogen production was acquired with combination of heat and acid treatment. Hydrogen production ($P_h$) and maximum hydrogen production rate ($R_h$) was calculated 661.01 mL and 12.21 mL/g dry wt biomass/hr from the modified Gompartz equation. Most of microbial community was analyzed as Streptococcus sp. from PCR-DGGE experiment of 16S rDNA. It was concluded that most significant microorganism for hydrogen production was Streptococcus gallolyticus sub sp. in this experiment.

Analysis is performed to determine the optimal lengths or cross-sectional areas of refrigerator-cooled current leads that can be applied to the conduction-cooled superconducting systems. The binary current lead is composed of the series combination of a normal metal at the upper(warm) part and a high $T_c$ superconductor(HTS) at the lower(cold) part. The heat conduction toward the cold end of HTS part constitutes a major refrigeration load. In addition, the joint between the parts should be cooled by a refrigerator in order to reduce the load at the low end and maintain the HTS part in a superconducting state. The sum of the work inputs required for the two refrigeration loads needs to be minimized for an optimal operation. In this design, three simple models that depict the refrigeration performance as functions of cooling temperature are developed based on some of the existing refrigerators. By solving one-dimensional conduction equation that take into account the temperature-dependent properties of the materials, the refrigeration works are numerically calculated for various values of the joint temperature and the sizes of two parts. The results show that for given size of HTS, there exist the optimal values for the joint temperature and the size of the normal metal. It is also found that the refrigeration work decreases as the length of HTS increases and that the optimal size of normal metal is quite independent of the size of HTS. For a given length of HTS, there is an optimal cross-sectional area and it increases as the length increases. The dependence of the optimal sizes on the refrigerator models employed are presented for 1kA leads.

In this study, we have demonstrated the fine structure effect of PdCo electrocatalyst on oxygen reduction reaction activity with different alloy composition and heat-treatment time. In order to identify the intrinsic factors for the electrocatalytic activity, various X-ray analyses were used, including inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometer, and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy technique. In particular, extended X-ray absorption fine structure was employed to extract the structural parameters required for understanding the atomic distribution and alloying extent, and to identify the corresponding simulated structures by using FEFF8 code and IFEFFIT software. The electrocatalytic activity of PdCo alloy nanoparticles for the oxygen reduction reaction was evaluated by using rotating disk electrode technique and correlated to the change in structural parameters. We have found that Pd-rich surface was formed on the Co core with increasing heating time over 5 hours. Such core shell structure of PdCo/C showed that a superior oxygen reduction reaction activity than pure Pd/C or alloy phase of PdCo/C electrocatalysts, because the adsorption energy of adsorbates was apparently reduced by lowering the dband center of the Pd skin due to a combination of the compressive strain effect and ligand effect.
In vitro elimination of Sweet potato leaf curl virus (SPLCV) from infected sweet potato is difficult due to low number of virus-free plants obtained from meristem tip culture and long growth period required for the virus detection. In this study, efficient production of the SPLCV-free sweet potato by in vitro therapy coupled with a PCR assay for virus detection was investigated. Infected shoots cultured on Murashige and Skoog medium were treated at three different temperatures for 7 weeks followed by meristem tip culture on the medium with or without ribavirin at 50 mg/L. The regenerated plantlets were tested for virus infection by a PCR assay. The results showed that the both heat- and cold-treatments, and addition of the ribavirin did not have significant effect on efficiency of the virus elimination. The meristem size, however, greatly affected the survival rate. Meristems sized over 0.4 mm survived better than smaller ones (0.2-0.3 mm). The PCR assay was approved to be a rapid, sensitive and reliable for the SPLCV detection in regenerated plantlets. Therefore, combination of cultivating meristem tips sized 0.4-0.5 mm on the medium at $22^{\circ}C$ without ribavirin and detection of SPLCV in the regenerated plantlets by the PCR assay was an efficient system for the SPLCV elimination from infected sweet potato.
PVT modules commonly can be defined as a combination of PV modules and thermal collectors. After absorbing sun light, electricity and hot water can be actually provided to users simultaneously, which dual outputs (electricity and hot water) have drawn academic interest and industrial activities. Additionally, heat exchange between solar cell and flowing water can enhance solar cell efficiency. Because of PVT modules effectiveness, new international markets and commercial products have made. Especially European, facilities and measurement methods are established to evaluate PVT module performance. However, there are no currently appropriate internationally and domestic standards and facilities to test PVT module performance Herein, to test PVT module performance, indoor thermal simulators and fundamental standard study are considered.
The strawberry was dipped into $1\%\;CaCl_2$ solution at $20^{\circ}C\;and\;45^{\circ}C$ for 15min. respectively, and then packaged with or without PE film (thickness: 0.011mm) before putting into the cold storage at $5^{\circ}C$. The results showed the lowest rate of rot incidence and the highest firmness with higher Vitamin C content and the best superficial appearance in the treatment of $CaCl_2$ dipping at $45^{\circ}C$ with packaging. It also showed lower pH and higher titratable acidity in the treatment However, no significant difference of SSC was found among various treatments. The results suggested that the combination of postharvest calcium dipping and packaging could result in more effective preservation for strawberry compared with the individual treatment.
