  • Modern society has become an aging society, and the National Statistics Office(NSO) expects that Korea will be also an aging society by 2019, that is, people over the age of 65 will account for 14 percent from the total population. In addition, the increase of labor flexibility is also one of the dramatic features in modern society. However, this social shift have unpredictable results, that is, the advent and increase of grandparent and grandchildren family. Modern medical technology has given Koreans longer expectancies, and structural and economic changes in society have brought early retirement. One of the main reasons that grandparent and grandchildren family increase is below an average of two children per family. There are various services available such as Health support center, Dream start center, Youth support center, Community child center, and Community welfare center. Besides, schools operates various programs for grandparent and grandchildren family with social workers and school counselors. But, most of all, what is necessary is a change of perspective on them. Basically, we need to develop a clear perspective on grandparent and grandchildren family as a not dismantling family type but alternative family type with creating a separate program or service

These centers are the main mediators of the family health operation. This study also aimed to understand the center users' satisfaction and demands. The results were as follows. First, a total of 65,794 participants from 9,960 businesses were processed. The majority had attended various integrated family services, followed by family counseling and/or family-friendly culture-establishing businesses. Second, the main users' profiles were as follows: average age, 41; average number of persons in the family, 3.78; education above foundation-level degree; diverse jobs that included special occupations; average monthly incomes of 3,390,000 won; and a middle-class living standard (as self-described by participants). Third, the users' main concern for their families was "financial difficulties," and they had an interest in education and counseling. Although they thought education and counseling were suitable solutions, they hesitated because they did not think their problems were serious enough to merit them. Fourth, the satisfaction level of their participation in their center's program was generally high, at 3.9-4.2 points. The majority of them said they would attend again in the future.

  • Purpose: Most of the currently used concepts and measurements of social support have been relevant for general population. The main purpose of this study is to conduct the concept analysis of perceived social support(PSS) of family caregivers for people with dementia. Methods: This study adopted the Walker and Avant concept analysis methodology. Results: Findings from this concept analysis suggested four defining attributes of PSS of family caregivers for people with dementia: 1) PSS is help or assistance that family caregivers perceive as available when needed; 2) PSS is offered through socio-ecological structure; 3) PSS has a specific function to meet the needs of family caregivers; and 4) PSS includes quality aspects where family caregivers choose, use, or evaluate it. Borrowing from the socio-ecological model, this study proposed the structural aspects of PSS. This study also identified functional aspects of PSS, such as emotional support, informational support, appraisal support, and practical support. Finally, this study assessed quality aspects of PSS, such as satisfaction, timeliness, usefulness, accessibility, and coordination. Conclusion: Focusing on family caregivers for people with dementia, we proposed a new model of PSS. The present study helped refine and clarify the concept of PSS of family caregivers for people with dementia. The results of this study may also contribute to promoting the development of more effective instruments for the concept.
