The purpose of this study is to investigate hand and sensibility of PET treated by Ultra-Violet (UV). The 4-channel PET knit fabric was treated by a self-made UV instrument in 5cm distance with different time frames-0min, 30min, and 90min. For hand evaluation, mechanical properties were measured by the KES-FB system. The environmental condition was controlled at 29$^{\circ}C$, 75% (R.H.)-summer standard climate. Twenty female students evaluated 'roughness', 'smoothness', 'wetness', 'stiffness', 'coolness', 'touch', 'preference', and 'comfort'. The outcomes of the experiment are as follows: The surface roughness of mechanical properties showed significant differences and the value of PET irradiated by UV for 90min was highest. The order of primary hand value such as NUMERI and FUKURAMI was in a following order-Untreated > 30min treated > 90min treated. Total hand value showed that PET irradiated by UV for 90min was appropriate for using summer fabric. The results of subjective sensibility were that the untreated and 30min treated PET were recognized as similar and had a good evaluation on 'comfort', 'preference' and 'the sense of touch'. This consequence disagreed with total hand value, because it was considered that subjects' hand sensibility was dependent on the feel of smoothness.
This paper provides a guideline for specifying the operational compliance characteristics considering the location of compliance center and the grasp points in assembly tasks using robot hands. Through various assembly tasks, we analyze the conditions of the achievable operational stiffness matrix with respect to the location of compliance center and the grasp points. Also, we show that some of coupling stiffness elements in the operational space cannot be planned arbitrarily. As a result it is concluded that the location of compliance center on the grasped object and the grasp points play important roles for successful assembly tasks and also the operational stiffness matrix should be carefully specified by considering those conditions.
This paper provides a guideline for specifying the operational compliance characteristics considering the location of compliance center and the grasp points in assembly tasks using robot hands, To be specific, some of coupling stiffness elements cannot be planned arbitrary. Through T-type assembly task, we analyze the conditions of the achievable operational stiffness matrix with respect to the location of compliance center and the grasp points. It is concluded that the location of compliance center on the grasped object and the grasp points play important roles for successful assembly tasks and also the operational stiffness matrix should be carefully specified by considering those conditions.

This paper presents a task-based analysis on the number of independent robotic fingers required for compliant manipulations. Based on the stiffness relation between operational space and fingertip space of a multi-fingered object manipulating system, we describe a technique for modulation of the fingertip stiffness without inter-finger coupling so as to achieve the desired stiffness specified in the operational space. Thus, we provides a guide line how many fingers are basically required for successful multi-fingered compliant tasks. Consequently, this paper enables us to assign effectively the number of fingers for various compliant manipulations by robot hands.
This study was carried out to improve the thermal insulation properties of wool and wool- like fabrics by treating the fabrics with polyethylene glycol, to evaluate the fabric hand of PEG treated wool and wool-like fabrics and to grade up the fabric hand of the treated fabrics by treating with softening agents. Wool and wool-like fabrics were treated with high molecular PEG-8,000 by PDC. The thermal release/storage properties were measured on a DSC. Hand of specimens were evaluated by KES-FB system. The results were as follows; 1. PEG-treated fabrics showed thermal storage and thermal release properties by DSC and the heat contents were generally proportional to the add-ons. 2. PEG-treated fabrics showed higher Koshi and lower Numeri and Sofutosa values due to lower tensile energy and recovery and higher bending rigidity and shear stiffness as the add- ons increased. 3. PEG-treated fabrics showed much lower bending rigidity after softening agents treatment.
Various fabrics, including natural fibers, regenerated cellulosic fibers, synthetic fibers, blend yarn, and mixture fabrics, were treated with the solutions of high purity chitosan in 1% acetic acid, having high viscosity of 930cps or low viscosity of 8cps. Physical/ mechanical properties of the treated fabrics samples were measured using Kawabata Evaluation System and drape tester. From these, hand values and total hand values of the fabric samples were calculated using Kawabata-Niwa translation equations. KOSHI, SHARI, HARI values have increased for the treated samples, while FUKURAMI values have decreased in general.
This research was designed to investigate the effect of a hand and a sensibility image on the preference to skirt textiles. 131 male and female college students were surveyed and 10 kinds of preferred fabrics were used each as a specimen for all 4 seasons. Factor analysis, t-test, Pearson's correlation, and regression were used for a statistical analysis by SPSS WIN 10.0. The results of this study are as follows: 1. In spring/fall season, 6 factors including 'elasticity/flexibility' were extracted as a hand factor, and 2 factors including 'modern elegance' were extracted as a sensibility factor in skirt textiles. 2. In summer season, 5 factors such as 'unevenness/stiffness' were extracted as a hand factor and 2 factors such as 'modern elegance romantic' as a sensibility image. 3. In winter season, 7 factors including 'elasticity' were extracted as a hand factor and 2 factors including 'modern elegance romantic' as a sensibility image. 4. Significant correlations existed between a hand and a sensibility image in spring/fall, summer, and winter. 5. A sensibility image was one of the important factors in the preference to skirt textiles in spring/fall, summer, and winter.
It is positively necessary to study on the stiffness of a 13degree-type impact tester in order to improve the fracture prediction of impact testing in wheels using FE(finite-element) analysis. The 13degree-type impact tester consists of an impact striker, a wheel fixer, a steel plate, and four cylindrical rubbers. Important parts of the tester are the steel plate and four cylindrical rubbers which play a role of absorbing impact energy during impact testing. Because of these buffers, the RF(reaction force) variation of the lower part in the 13degree-type impact tester showed the tendency like a damped harmony oscillation during impact testing. In order to investigate the stiffness of a 13degree-type impact tester, this work measured each stiffness of a steel plate and cylindrical rubbers. The stiffness of a cylindrical rubber was measured using a compressive tester. On the other hand, the stiffness of a steel plate was predicted by simulating experimental method using FE analysis.
The purpose of this study is to examine the difference of judge's gender and age groups in preference of S/S men's suit fabrics, and to analyze the relationship between the preference and the texture by gender and age group. For this study, 60 types of S/S men's suit fabrics were used with variously-composed fibers, such as wool, wool-blended, and PET, thickness, and weight. To evaluate the texture and the preference subjectively, nine ranks' semantic differential scale questions of 22 texture adjectives and preference of 4 apparel items were developed, Through the factor analysis, texture adjectives were classified into 7 categories: "stiffness," "elasticity," "bulkiness," "coolness," "smoothness," and "drapability." Depending on gender and age groups of judges, statistically significant differences on texture factors and the preference were observed. Especially, men under 30 years of age showed a higher grade of stiffness and a lower preference on pants than other groups. The relationship between the texture and the preference was different by gender and age group: Women evaluated a preference of men's suit fabrics in relation to stiffness and smoothness, whereas men did so in relation to stiffness, smoothness, coolness, and drapability. A young age group put more importance on drapability for preference of men's suit fabric.
This paper describes the prediction of eigenfrequencies due to changes in stiffness and mass in the connection area of the lap joint beam in terms of linear and torsional stiffness as well as connection length. The sensitivities of mass and stiffness in the finite element model were derived by using the first-order differential and algebraic equation and were thereafter applied to obtain new natural frequencies that were compared with theoretical exact solutions. Newly predicted natural frequencies due to only a change in stiffness were in relatively good agreement with those in lower modes for rigid joints, while further investigation was needed for flexible joints. On the other hand, only the change in mass resulted in a large discrepancy in the flexible joint case. It may be strongly anticipated that this study will provide a useful tool for estimating modal parameters by change in any design variable, such as the structural dimension, material property, or connection type for a large-scale structure, even though the proposed methodology is currently limited to a jointed beam.
