We present the properties of globular cluster systems for 10 early-type galaxies in low density environments obtained using deep images from the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Using the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey as a counterpart in high-density environments, we investigate the role of environment in determining the properties of their globular cluster systems. We detect a strong colour bimodality of globular cluster systems in half of our galaxy sample. It is found that there is a strong correlation between the colour and richness of globular cluster populations and their host galaxy luminosities: the less bright galaxies possess bluer and fewer globular clusters as also seen in rich cluster environments. However, the mean colour of globular clusters in our field sample are slightly bluer than those in cluster environments at a given galaxy luminosity, and the colour of the red population has a steeper slope with absolute luminosity. By employing the YEPS simple stellar population model, the colour offset corresponds to metallicity difference of $\Delta$[F e/H ] ~ 0.15 - 1.20 or an age difference of $\Delta$age ~ 2 Gyr on average, implying that GCs in field galaxies appear to be either less metal-rich or younger than those in cluster galaxies. Although we have found that galaxy environment has a subtle effect on the formation and metal enrichment of GC systems, host galaxy mass is the primary factor that determines the stellar populations of GCs and the galaxy itself.
The lunar surface progressively darkens and reddens as a result of sputtering from solar wind particles and bombardment of micrometeoroids. The extent of exposure to these space weathering agents is frequently calculated as the location in a diagram of reflectance at 750 nm vs. 950 nm/750 nm color (R-C). Sim & Kim (2018) examined the R-C trends of pixels within ~3,500 craters, and revealed that the length (L) and skewness (s) of R-C trends can be employed as a secondary age or maturity indicator. We broaden this research to general lunar surface areas (3,400 tiles of 0.25° × 0.25° size) in 218 mare basalt units, whose ages have been derived from the size-frequency distribution analysis by Hiesinger et al. (2011). We discover that L and s rise with age until ~3.2 Gyr and reduce rather rapidly afterward, while the optical maturity, OMAT, reduces monotonically with time. We show that in some situations, when not only OMAT but also L and s are incorporated in the estimation utilizing 750 & 950 nm photometry, the age estimation becomes considerably more reliable. We also observed that OMAT and the lunar cratering chronology function (cumulative number of craters larger than a certain diameter as a function of time) have a relatively linear relationship.

We use grid-based hydrodynamic simulations to study star formation history in nuclear rings of barred-spiral galaxies. In our previous study, we concentrated on bar-only galaxies without spirals, finding that the star formation rate (SFR) in a nuclear ring exhibits a strong primary burst at early time before decreasing to below 1 $M_{\odot}/yr$ at late time. The rapid decline is caused by the paucity of the gas in the bar region, due to early massive gas inflows to the nuclear ring. Since star formation in nuclear rings is observed to be sustained for about 1-2 Gyr, this requires mechanisms to supply the gas to the bar regions. In this work, we study the effect of spiral arms on the radial gas inflows and related star formation in the nuclear rings. We show that spiral arms are efficient to remove angular momentum of the gas to cause significant gas inflows to the bar region, provided the patten speed of the arms is much smaller than that of the bar. The inflowing gas is added to a nuclear ring, making the ring SFR episodic over a long period of time. The time interval of multiple bursts of star formation is a few tens to hundred million years, with the mean peak SFR of ${\sim}5M_{\odot}/yr$, consistent with observations of M100.
We investigate physical properties of the nearby (∼ 7.5 pc) astrometric binary μ Cas in the context of standard evolutionary theory. Based on the spectroscopically determined relative abundances ([α/Fe] ≳ +0.4 dex, [Fe/H] ∼ −0.7 dex), all physical inputs such as opacities and equation of state are consistently generated. By combining recent spectroscopic analyses with the astrometric observations from the HIPPARCOS parallaxes and the CHARA array, the evolutionary model grids have been constructed. Through the statistical evaluation of the χ2-minimization among alternative models, we find a reliable evolutionary solution (MA, MB, tage) = (0.74 M⊙, 0.19 M⊙, 11 Gyr) which excellently satisfies observational constraints. In particular, we find that the helium abundance of μ Cas is comparable with the primordial helium contents (Yp ∼ 0.245). On the basis of the well-defined stellar parameters of the primary star, the internal structure and the p-mode frequencies have been estimated. From our seismic computation, μ Cas is expected to have a first order spacing ∆ν ∼ 169 μHz. The ultimate goal of this study is to describe physical processes inside a low-mass star through a complete modelling from the spectroscopic observation to the evolutionary computation.
We present a new photometric study of the globular cluster NGC288 in Stromgren u, v, b, y, and H$\beta$ system. This cluster is known to have an intermediate metallicity but its color-magnitude diagram has a pure blue horizontal branch, which is a signature of metal poor stellar population. We compare our dataset with Bergbusch's (1993) in both field size and CMD to see whether different photometry system would determine the same physical parameters of a cluster. Demarque and Yi's isochrones (1996, private communication) were applied to Bergbusch's dataset, and we obtained distance modulus of (m - M) = 14.9 $\pm$ 0.2, color excess of E(B - V) = 0.03, and age of 1.5$\pm$3 Gyr. Vandenberg's (1985) isochrones for Stromgren system were also applied to Bergbusch's and our data. We find that the isochrone fits to different photometric systems give rather in consist ant solutions. The source of this discrepancy may become clear when the Demarque and Yi's isochrones for Johnson system are converted to those of Stromgren system. We note that Kurucz model atmospheres provide a useful ground for this conversion work as well as theoretical study of Stromgren characteristics of globular cluster stars.
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) establishes long-term infections associated with severe gastric diseases such as peptic ulceration and gastric cancer. Exposure to an antibacterial agent can help regulate the expression levels of its pathogenic genes. In this study, we analyzed the transcriptional changes in H. pylori genes induced by β-caryophyllene. We used next-generation sequencing (NGS) to analyze RNA expression changes, and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was performed as required to verify the results. The NGS results showed that 30 out of 1,632 genes were expressed differentially by β-caryophyllene treatment. Eleven genes associated with DNA replication, virulence factors, and T4SS components were significantly downregulated. RT-PCR confirmed that treatment reduced the expression levels of 11 genes. RT-PCR showed the reduced expression of 11 genes (dnaE, dnaN, holB, gyrA, cagA, vacA, secA, flgE, virB2, virB4, and virB8) following β-caryophyllene treatment. These results suggest that β-caryophyllene can modulate various H. pylori pathogenic determinants and be a potential therapeutic agent for H. pylori infection.
During the traditional production process of yugwa, a Korean traditional oil-puffed snack, three bacterial isolates, 12, 37, and B1 from waxy rice slurry were characterized by using the molecular techniques, and the quality of the yugwa prepared by using three isolates was examined in relation to physical and sensory properties. Isolates 37 and B1 were identified as Lactobacillus sp. by 16S rDNA sequence analysis, while isolate 12 was as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens by gyrA sequence analysis. Waxy rice inoculated with isolate 12 demonstrated the lowest hardness and the highest peak and [mal viscosity. Yugwa prepared from isolate 12-inoculated waxy rice indicated the lowest hardness and the highest volume expansion, the key characteristics of yugwa. This result presents the possibility for the use of a starter in the commercial production of yugwa and other rice-based snacks.

We present test results of time-series CCD photometry to investigate the photometric precision of the BOAO (Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory) 1.8m telescope. A well-known field of the old open cluster M67, which includes two pulsating blue stragglers and two W UMa type binaries, was monitored for 3.5 hours on February 22, 1996. We have collected 148 V frames and 3 B frames. Photometric noises which consist mainly of photon noise and scintillation noise, were lowered down to about 1.9 mmag for stars of $10.\;^m5$ in M67 with exposure time of 20 seconds. From the C-M diagram for M67, a number of observational properties were derived; E(B-V) = 0.03, (V-Mv)o = 9.6, Age = 4 Gyr. We obtained light curves for four known variable stars and confirmed their variational characteristics. The pulsating blue stragglers show a low amplitude (about 0.01 mag) of light variation.

In December 2016, stem rot symptoms were observed on Persian buttercup (Ranunculus asiaticus) plants in Chilgok, Gyeongbuk, Korea. In the early stage of the disease, several black spots appeared on the stem of infected plants. As the disease progressed, the infected stem cleaved and wilted. The causal agent was isolated from a lesion and incubated on Reasoner's 2A (R2A) agar at $25^{\circ}C$. Total genomic DNA was extracted for phylogenetic analysis. Based on the 16S rRNA gene analysis, the isolated strain was found to belong to the genus Pseudomonas. To identify the isolated bacterial strain at the species level, the nucleotide sequences of the gyrase B (gyrB) and RNA polymerase D (rpoD) genes were obtained and compared with the sequences in the GenBank database. As the result, the causal agent of the stem rot disease was identified as Pseudomonas marginalis. To determine the pathogenicity of the isolated bacterial strain, it was inoculated into the stem of healthy R. asiaticus plant, the inoculated plant showed a lesion with the same characteristics as the naturally infected plant. Based on these results, this is the first report of bacterial stem rot on R. asiaticus caused by P. marginalis in Korea.
