  • Although the increasing incidence of central precocious puberty (CPP) in Korea has recently raised public concerns about health and growth problems, there are many areas of uncertainty regarding the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of CPP. In this paper, we review the definition of precocity, the assessment of CPP, and the hormonal abnormalities that support the diagnosis. In addition, we review the practical guidelines regarding the clinical use of gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs in children with CPP. Indications for treatment, determination of dosage, monitoring during treatment, and discontinuation of therapy are discussed.

  • Preterm infants are frequently discharged from the hospital with growth retardation. Given the potentially lifelong effects of growth impairmnet during a critical time of development, considerable effort should be focused on improving growth after discharge. Growth monitoring must be based on regular measurements of weight, length, and head circumference to identify those preterm infants with poor growth that may need additional nutritional support. Although prior studies vary in design and the intervention used, the evidence supports the use of fortified formulas in formula-fed preterm infants after discharge. The situation for infants fed human milk is much less clear, it seems prudent to concentrate our efforts on the encouragement of breast-feeding in this population. Catch up growth may have many benefits, and may lead to improved development. However, its long-term metabolic consequences are currently unclear. Understanding the optimal means of providing nutrition after discharge is an ongoing process.

  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disease mainly affecting the gastrointestinal tract. The incidence of the disease is rapidly increasing worldwide, and a number of patients are diagnosed during their childhood or adolescence. Aside from controlling the gastrointestinal symptoms, nutritional aspects such as growth, bone mineral density, anemia, micronutrient deficiency, hair loss, and diet should also be closely monitored and managed by the pediatric IBD team especially since the patients are in the development phase.

  • Diameter growth was surveyed for 22 years-old pitch pine (Pinus rigida Mill.) growing on the forest land (site protected from artificial damage) and the resting place (site open for the recreation) of the Children Park, Seoul, Korea on September 28, 1975. The purpose of the survey was to find out difference in the tree growth between the two sites, and possible causes of the difference. Both the resting place and the forest land have deep fertile sandy-loam soil, moderate slope for south-west. The resting place, however, has much higher soil compactness by treading than the forest land. Before May 5, 1973, the opening date of the park, the trees on the resting place had higher diameter growth than those on the forest land as measured with increament borer. After the Park opening the trees on the resting place showed less growth than those on the forest land. In 1975, the growth on the resting place was less than that of the forest land by 6.5% at 1% significant level. The difference in growth was attributed to the soil compactness of the resting place by treading. The necessity for the same kind of study with other species for the tree management of parks was suggested.

  • Background and Objectives This study was performed to evaluate the long-term effect of adenotonsillectomy on childhood growth by examining preoperative growth status and presenting symptoms. Subjects and Method One hundred and four patients who underwent adenotonsillectomy from January to December 2009 were enrolled in this study. Clinical data were collected from medical record reviews and through the administered questionnaire. We investigated symptoms and growth changes during 5 years following the surgery. Results The mean age of patients was $6.0{\pm}1.94$ years (range, 3-10), with the male to female ratio of 62:42. Pre-operative symptoms were significantly improved after the surgery. The mean pre-operative height and weight percentiles were $53.6{\pm}27.4$ and $59.6{\pm}29.2$ at initial evaluation, and $67.1{\pm}26.4$ and $59.6{\pm}28.6$ at 5 years post adenotonsillectomy (p<0.001, p=0.989), respectively. An increase in height percentile was more prominent in patients whose pre-operative height percentile was less than 50 compared to those with a percentile of 50 or more (p<0.001). Weight percentile was significantly increased in those with the pre-operative weight percentile of less than 50 and decreased in patients with a percentile of 50 or more. Conclusion Adenotonsillectomy has a positive effect on height growth in children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy, especially in patients whose height percentile is less than 50. Weight gain also can be expected in preoperative low-weight children.

  • The purposes of this study was to identify the effects of regular training on body composition, bone mineral density and growth factors by taekwondo training program in the children. Subjects were aged 11$\sim$13 years. There was classified two groups (experiment group 12, control group 12), total 24. Measured items for this study were body composition (weight, percent body fat, body mass index), lumbar (L2, L3, L4), femur (neck, trochanter, ward's triangles) bone mineral density and growth factors (growth hormone, IGF-I, IGFBP-III) in the 12weeks before and after. Results of this study were as follows; In the body composition, there were showed significant differences on the weight, percent body fat and body mass index level between groups. In the bone mineral density, there were showed significant differences on the lumbar 2, 3, and femur neck, femur trochanter, femur ward's triangles level between groups. In the growth factors, there were showed significant differences on the growth hormone, IGF-I, and IGFBP-III level between groups. This study showed that an 12weeks taekwondo training program affected in a positive effects in almost of items in trained children.

  • The Special Needs Education Assessment Tool (SNEAT) were verified of reliability and validity. However, the reliability and validity has been verified is only Okinawa Prefecture, the national data has not been analyzed. Therefore, this study aimed to verify the reliability and construct validity of SNEAT in Miyagi Prefecture as part of the national survey. SNEAT using 55 children collected from the classes on independent activities of daily living for children with disabilities in Miyagi Prefecture between November and December 2015. Survey data were collected in a longitudinal prospective cohort study. The reliability of SNEAT was verified via the internal consistency method; the coefficient of Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ were over 0.7. The validity of SNEAT was also verified via the latent growth curve model. SNEAT is valid based on its goodness-of-fit values obtained using the latent growth curve model, where the values of comparative fit index (0.997), tucker-lewis index (0.996) and root mean square error of approximation (0.025) were within the goodness-of-fit range. These results indicate that SNEAT has high reliability and construct validity.

  • The total population of Korea in 1975 was 35,281,000 and population density was $357/km^2$, which is one of the highest rate of the countries in the world. In the early part of 1960's, prior to the initiation of national family planning program in 1962, the natural population increase rate in Korea was almost 3.0%. However, due to the positive support and activity of the national family planning program, the population growth rate has been dropped right below 2.0% in 1970, and decreased to 1.7% in 1975. The average number of children per woman was 5.8 in 1961 and has decreased steadily to 3.5 in 1975. However, traditional value like the 'boy-preference' concept may bring many difficulties of lowering the fertility rate, decreasing number of children less than three in the future. Rising marriage age which had much contributed to decrease the population growth showed preferably falling trends since 1970. There is a prospect that total number of birth will be continuously increased while the fertility rate may be fallen since the age group born during 'baby-boom' soon after the Korean war are becoming the reproductive age group at present time. Considering the above mentioned factors, family planning program should be much improved and strengthened and the government support is much required in order to meet the above mentioned objectives which maintain appropriate level of the population growth.
