  • This paper studies the validity about a joint operation of neutral wire and overhead grounding wire in combined distribution systems. The overhead grounding wire and neutral wire are currently installed separately and grounded by common. However there is no any ineffectiveness or electrical problem in case of the proposed system, such system can be operated at real distribution system. Therefore this paper describes the suitability of a joint operation through lightning surge analysis on combined distribution systems. Lightning surge analysis is carried out by EMTP/ATPDraw to obtain the overvoltage of overhead line and underground cable in various conditions such as locations and current types of lightning stroke. Overvoltage gained by the analysis show that the insulation strength of the joint operation case is not stable compare with the current operation case.

  • This paper dealt with the design, fabrication and application of a risk voltage measurement system (RVMS) which analyzes the step and touch voltages in electrical grounding systems. The RVMS supply 300 V and 1.4 A in ranges from 40 Hz to 1 kHz as the test power source. A DAQ module having resolution of 400 kS/s and 16 bit is equipped with 7 inputs for measuring voltage and current. Also, a noise elimination algorithm of digital filter was applied to reduce the measurement error caused by external noises as a commercial frequency current. The performance of the RVMS was evaluated by measurement of the step and touch voltage according to the IEEE standard 80 and 81 in a grounding system with a 10 m counterpoise. The result showed that the RVMS analyzes the risk voltage with the error below 5%.

  • This paper presents the electric shock hazards and solutions of loss of the combined protective and neutral (PEN) conductor in TN-C-S system. In order to mitigate the touch voltage on exposed-conductive-parts in a break in the PEN conductor, the touch voltages on exposed-conductive-parts in a break in the PEN conductor were experimentally investigated as a function of the ground resistances of the source grounding electrode and customer's additional grounding electrode. As a result, the equipotential bonding is one of important requirements for installations supplied by TN-C-S system. A solution of mitigating the touch voltages on exposed-conductor-parts caused by a loss of the PEN conductor would be the installation of the additional grounding electrode at the customer's service entrance. The ground resistance of additional grounding electrode necessary to limit the touch voltage to a safety voltage of less than 50[V] depends on the load and circuit parameters. In addition, the undervoltage sensing devices oner affordable solutions to detect a loss of the PEN conductor in TN-C-S system.

  • This paper deals with the potential interferences between ground rods. To propose a method for reducing the potential interference caused by grounding electrodes, the theoretical analysis and the reduced scale model tests, which we related to the measurement and computation of ground potential rise and potential interference caused by actual-sized grounding electrodes where current is injected, were carried out. The ground potential rise and potential interference coefficients were measured by using the hemispherical water tank grounding simulator and calculated by CDEGS software as a function of the distance between grounding electrodes. The ground potential rises and potential interference coefficients strongly depend on the distance between grounding electrodes, and the measured results were compared with the computer calculated data and were known in good agreement.

  • An analysis of marine accidents that occurred in the last five years, revealed that 77.0 % of all grounding accidents and 66.1% of all marine casualties involved small vessels, which was a very high level relatively. The Mokpo Regional Maritime Safety Tribunal (Mokpo-KMST) inquired on 72 cases of marine accidents in 2021, of which 10 cases were grounding accidents. Furthermore, eight cases of grounding accidents occurred in small fishing vessels. This study analyzed eight cases of grounding accidents on small fishing vessels that inquired in the jurisdictional area of Mokpo-KMST in 2021. I found out that this grounding occurred in clear weather with good visibility (2-4 miles) and good sea conditions with a wave height of less than 1 meter. Furthermore, I found that the main causes of grounding were drowsy navigation due to fatigue, neglect of vigilance, neglect of checking ship's position, overconfidence in GPS plotter, and lack of understanding of chart symbols and tidal differences. To reduce grounding accidents of small fishing vessels, I suggested the following measures. First, crew members who have completed the able seafarer training course on bridge watchkeeping should assist to the master. Second, alarm systems to prevent drowsiness should be installed in the bridge. Third, the regulation should be prepared for the performance standards and updating GPS plotter. Finally, the skipper of small vessels should be trained periodically to be familiar with chart symbols and basic terrestrial navigation.

  • This study proposes a newly modified form of existing ground electrodes in order to secure trust of grounding system for large current caused by a stroke of lightning. Proposed planar earth structure has a several needle electrodes around a circular rod and 4 plane electrodes in all directions. The plane electrodes are fused with the insulator on the linear rod, so that they're electrically isolated. The concept is to increase the discharge amount of earth structure using multiple discharge paths like needle and plane electrodes. To check the discharge efficiency of the suggested scheme, the discharge currents are compared with typically used two kinds of ground rods. To ensure accuracy in the measurement of the discharge current, the same material was used for the comparison model. Also, the ground resistance are simulated by CDEGS commercial software and the results are compared with measured data. Based on this kind of experimental study, the suggested ground rod can be used when designing a ground system or when constructing a ground system at the site.

  • This paper analyzes the backgrounds of the standards for protection against electric shock in Global Technical Regulations (GTR) of Fuel Cell Vehicle (FCV). Targets on research were high voltage criteria, safety current, isolation and grounding resistance, time limitation, energy, adequate clearance, and test procedure. Based on human impedance and effect of current in IEC 60479-1, safety of human was examined. Then, isolation and grounding circuit model of FCV were analyzed theoretically. The results give several suggestions: touch voltage less than 25V, AC energy less than 0.0813J, separation considering middle finger length, grounding resistance less than $0.2\Omega$, maximum AC ground voltage of 1V (rms), and isolation resistance between earth and electrical chassis. In MATLAB/Simulink environment, error characteristics of isolation resistance measurement procedure using internal DC sources were analyzed under variations of internal resistance of voltmeter and isolation resistance.

  • In order to detect the current flowing through concealed conductor, this paper proposes a new method based on derivative method. Firstly, this paper analyzes the main peak characteristic of the derivative function of magnetic field generated by a current-carrying conductor, and a relationship between the current flowing through the conductor and the main peak of the derivative function is obtained and applied to calculate the current. Then, the method is applied to detect the conductor current flowing through grounding grids of substations. Finally, the numerical experimental and field experiment verified the feasibility and accuracy of the method, and the computing results show that the method can effectively measure the conductor current of grounding grids with low error, and the error is within 5 %.

  • In order to evaluate the performance of a grounding system against lightning or fault currents including high frequency components, the grounding impedance should be considered rather than its ground resistance. Recently, some researches on the evaluation and modeling of the grounding impedances have been carried out but the results have not been yet sufficient. This paper deals with the frequency dependence of the resistivity and relative dielectric constant of sand associated with water contents. As a result, the resistivity of sand is getting lower with increasing water content and it is nearly independent on the frequency in the range of less than 1MHz, and is decreased over the frequency range of above 1MHz. Also, the relative dielectric constant is rapidly decreased with the frequency in the range of less than 10kHz, but it is nearly not dependent on the frequency over the frequency range of 10kHz. It was found from this work that the frequency dependance of resistivity and relative dielectric constant of soil should be considered in designing the grounding systems for protection against lightning or surges.
