In this paper, the dynamic crawling of a five-bar planar mechanism is investigated. One complete cycle of the crawling selected in this study consists of four different steps, i) sliding at one contact point between the mechanism and the ground, ii) changing its configuration without sliding at two contact points, iii) sliding at the other contact point, and iv) again changing its configuration without sliding at two contact points. In this type of crawling, the crawling mechanism maintains the shape of the parallel structure throughout a complete crawling cycle. The modeling algorithm for serial manipulators proposed by M. Thomas and et al.[1] is employed by introducing imaginary joints and links which represent the contact interfaces between the one end of the mechanism and the ground, while the other end of the mechanism is regarded as an end-effector of the imaginary serial manipulator which treats the reaction force and torque at the contact point as external forces. Then, a complete cycle of dynamic crawling of the mechanism is investigated through various computer simulations. The simulation result show that the stable crawling characteristics of the mechanism could be secured when the proper configurations depending on specified frictional constraints are met.
In this paper stability about lateral soil movement of bridge abutment constructed on the soft ground, reinforced with the sand compaction pile (SCP) and the preconsolidaton methods, was evaluated by using the centrifuge testing facility which stress conditions in field could be reconstructed in the laboratory. The layouts of model such as ground condition, sand compaction piles and abutment was determined on the basis of similitude law with the reduced scale of 1/200. Construction sequences of installing SCP, preparing reclaimed ground, preconsolidating ground and building the piled bridge abutment were reconstructed during centrifuge modelling and measurements of movement were followed in each sequence. From analyzing the results of measuring movements of the model abutment and the ground, measured lateral movement of model abutment was found to be within the allowable value so that stability of abutment against lateral sliding was secured.

In this paper, the standard Dole, Glover, Khargoneker, and Francis (abbr. : DGKF 1989) H\ulcorner controller (H\ulcornerC) is extended to the nonlinear feedback linearization-H\ulcorner/sliding mode controller (NFL-H\ulcorner/SMC), to tackle the problem of the unmeasurable state variables as in the conventional SMC, to obtain smooth control as the linearized controller in a linear system, and to improve the time-domain performance under a worst scenario. The proposed controller is obtained by combining the H\ulcorner estimator with the nonlinear feedback linearization-sliding mode controller (NFL-SMC) and it does not need to measure all the state variables as in the traditional SMC. The proposed controller is applied as a nonlinear power system stabilizer (PSS) for the improvement of the power system damping characteristics of an single machine infinite bus system (SMIBS) connected through a double circuit line. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified by nonlinear time-domain simulation in case of a 3-cycle line-to-ground fault and in case of the parameter variations for the AVR gain K\ulcorner and for the inertia moment M.

In this paper, a new neural networks and neural network based sliding mode controller are proposed. The new neural networks are an mor self-recurrent neural networks which use a recursive least squares method for the fast on-line leammg. The error self-recurrent neural networks converge considerably last than the back-prollagation algorithm and have advantage oi bemg less affected by the poor initial weights and learning rate. The controller for suspension system is designed according to sliding mode technique based on new proposed neural networks. In order to adapt shding mode control mnethod, each frame dstance hetween ground and vehcle body is estimated md controller is designed according to estimated neural model. The neural networks based sliding mode controller approves good peiformance throllgh computer sirnulations.
This study investigates the optimum design parameters of a superelastic friction base isolator (S-FBI) system through a multi-objective genetic algorithm to improve the performance of isolated buildings against near-fault earthquakes. The S-FBI system consists of a flat steel-PTFE sliding bearing and superelastic NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) cables. Sliding bearing limits the transfer of shear across the isolation interface and provides damping from sliding friction. SMA cables provide restoring force capability to the isolation system together with additional damping characteristics. A three-story building is modeled with S-FBI isolation system. Multiple-objective numerical optimization that simultaneously minimizes isolation-level displacements and superstructure response is carried out with a genetic algorithm in order to optimize S-FBI system. Nonlinear time history analyses of the building with optimal S-FBI system are performed. A set of 20 near-fault ground motion records are used in numerical simulations. Results show that S-FBI system successfully control response of the buildings against near-fault earthquakes without sacrificing in isolation efficacy and producing large isolation-level deformations.

In Underwater Flight Vehicle depth control system, the followings must be required. First, it needs robust performance which can get over modeling error, parameter variation and disturbance. Second, it needs accurate performance which have small overshoot phenomenon and steady state error to avoid colliding with ground surface or obstacles. Third, it needs continuous control input to reduce the acoustic noise and propulsion energy consumption. Finally, it needs interpolation method which can sole the speed dependency problem of controller parameters. To solve these problems, we propose a depth control method using Fuzzy Sliding Mode Controller with feedforward control-plane bias term and Neural Network Interpolator. Simulation results show the proposed method has robust and accurate control performance by the continuous control input and has no speed dependency problem.

In this paper, we present a nonlinear feedback linearization-full order observer/sliding mode controller (NFL-FOO/SMC), to obtain smmoth control as a linearized controller in a linear system (or to cancel the nonlinearity in a nonlinear system), and to solve the problem of the unmeasurable state variables as in the conventional SMC. The proposed controller is obtained by combining the nonlinear feedback linearization-sliding mode control (NFL-SMC) with the full order observer (FOO)and eliminates the need to measure all the state variables in the traditional SMC. The proposed controller is applied to the nonlinear power system stabilizer (PSS) for damping oscillations in a power system. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified by the nonlinear time-domain simulations in case of a 3-cycle line-to-ground fault and in case of the parameter variation for the AVR gain K\ulcorner and for the inertia moment M.
The most generally implemented method to detect the ground speed of the railway vehicles is to use the rotary type speed sensor attached to wheel axle. The Slip or sliding phenomenon on the railway vehicles occurs frequently caused by the weak viscosity of the wheel. Thus, precisely to control the car, the slip/sliding detection system is required. In this paper we proposed for the speed data management system, which uses rotary type speed sensor. Proposed speed management system can detect the slip/sliding with wheel axle as well as correct the generated speed error during in error time, to provide accurate speed and precise location data. The effectiveness for adapting to the railway system is clarified by the computer simulation.
The ground effect on tilt-rotor UAV is analyzed by simulating the hovering UAV for various altitudes. Ground effect increases pressure beneath the UAV body and generates additional lifting force. The ground effect diminishes at altitude 3m and hovering UAV generates constant lifting force above 3m.

The 2nd phase of Seoul Subway, Lines 5,6,7 and 8, is in progress. To reduce the surface traffic congestion during construction the greater part of the system has been engineered by bored tunnelling. The current tunnelling methodology is based on the New Austrian Tunnelling Method. Serveral collapses have been reported to date. Most of the collapses took place in the area forwed with soft ground. The modes and causes of the collapses were progressive failures in the unsupported surface and sliding failures due to the unfavourable joint direction. The major causes turned out to be the weakness of ground and the sudden influx of ground water from the surface. Some measures to prevent the failures are also presented. To ensure the safe tunnelling ghrough the soft ground the unsupported excavation area has to be minimized and closed as early as possible. Additional support measures such as supporting core, sealing shotcrete, forepoling, spread footing, face rock bolting and grouting should be employed as well depend on ground conditions.
