OPTIMAL SHAPE DESIGN OF THE FRONT WHEEL LOWER CONTROL ARM CONSIDERING DYNAMIC EFFECTS

  • In this study, we conducted a vibration fatigue analysis of the lower control arm in a vehicle suspension system. The vehicle was driven during the tests so that the dynamic effects could be taken into account. The dynamic load of the frequency domain was superimposed on the frequency response analysis. We performed a virtual proving ground test using multi-body dynamics, along with a finite element analysis and fatigue life predictions. Shape optimization was also considered using the design of the experimental approach, and a response surface analysis was performed to improve the durability performance of the lower control arm. We identified the elements that had the most influence on the optimal shape of the finite element model and analyzed the sensitivity of those elements. Then the optimal points that minimized the amount of damage to the areas of interest were determined through a response surface analysis. The results suggested that the fatigue life of the model increased as its mass was not increased excessively, and demonstrated that these design procedures yielded an appropriate optimized lower control arm model.

Performance Analysis on the IMM-PDAF Method for Longitudinal and Lateral Maneuver Detection using Automotive Radar Measurements (차량용 레이더센서를 이용한 IMM-PDAF 기반 종-횡방향 운동상태 검출 및 추정기법에 대한 성능분석)

  • In order to develop an active safety system which avoids or mitigates collisions with preceding vehicles such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), accurate state estimation of the nearby vehicles is very important. In this paper, an algorithm is proposed using 3 dynamic models to better estimate the state of a vehicle which has various dynamic patterns in both longitudinal and lateral direction. In particular, the proposed algorithm is based on the Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) method which employs three different dynamic models, in cruise mode, lateral maneuver mode and longitudinal maneuver mode. In addition, a Probabilistic Data Association Filter (PDAF) is utilized as a data association algorithm which can improve the reliability of the measurement under a clutter environment. In order to verify the performance of the proposed method, it is simulated in comparison with a Kalman filter method which employs a single dynamic model. Finally, the proposed method is validated using radar data obtained from the field test in the proving ground.

Seismic Performance Evaluation of Reinforced Concrete Shear Wall Systems Designed with Special and Semi-Special Seismic Details (특수 및 준특수 상세에 따른 철근콘크리트 전단벽의 내진성능평가)

  • This research presents the nonlinear analysis model for reinforced concrete shear wall systems with special boundary elements as proposed by the Korean Building Code (KBC, 2009). In order to verify the analysis model, analytical results were compared with the experimental results obtained from previous studies. Established analytical model was used to perform nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. Analytical results showed that the semi-special shear wall improved significantly the performance in terms of ductility and energy dissipation as expected based on previous test results. Furthermore, nonlinear incremental dynamic analysis was performed using 20 ground motions. Based on computer analytical results, the ordinary shear wall, special shear wall and newly proposed semi-special shear wall systems were evaluated based on the methods in FEMA P965. The results based on the probabilistic approaches accounting for inherent uncertainties showed that the semi-special shear wall systems provide a high capacity/demand (ACMR) ratio owing to their details, which provide enough capacity to sustain large inelastic deformations.

Numerical Analysis on Effects of Horizontal Drain Arrangement of Vacuum Consolidation (수평배수재 배열의 진공압밀효과에 대한 수치해석)

  • This paper is results of numerical works of investigating effects of horizontal drain arrangements on vacuum consolidation. Extensive numerical analyses were carried out to find the appropriate arrangements of horizontal drain of vacuum consolidation. Commercially available program of CRISP, well known to be good to modelling the behavior of clay material, was used Cam-clay model, based on the Critical State of Soil Mechanics(CSSM), was used to simulate the geotechnical engineering behavior of clay. Model test results carried out previously in the laboratory were compared with numerically estimated results and it was found that results about consolidational settlement with times were in good agreements. Based on this confirmation, parametric numerical study was performed to investigate effects of horizontal drain arrangements on vacuum consolidation with changing the vertical and horizontal spacings between drains for the given soil properties and vacuum. The effect of distance of drain located in top layer from the surface of the ground on the settlement due to vacuum was also investigated. As a results of numerical analyses, appropriate arrangements of horizontal drain to maximize the consolidation settlement due to vacuum were found. The mechanism of vacuum consolidation about the vacuum pressures being transferred to the effective stresses around drains was also evaluated.

Influence of the Existing Cavern on the Stability of Adjacent Tunnel Excavation by Small-Scale Model Tests (축소모형시험을 통한 공동이 근접터널 굴착에 미치는 영향평가)

  • Generally, when constructing a tunnel close to existing structures, the tunnel must be built at a constant distance from the structures that is more than width of tunnel to minimize the impact of interference between an existing structures and new tunnel. Spacing of these closed tunnels should be designed considering soil state, size of tunnel and reinforcement method. Particularly when the ground is soft, a care should be taken with the tunnel plans because the closer the tunnel is to the existing structures, the greater the deformation becomes. As methods of reviewing the effect of cavities on the stability of a tunnel, field measurement, numerical analysis and scaled model test can be considered. In the methods, the scaled model test can reproduce the engineering characteristics of a rock in a field condition and the shape of structures using the scale factor even not all conditions cannot be considered. In this study, when construction of a tunnel close to existing structures, the method and considering factors of the scaled model test were studied to predict the actual tunnel behavior in planning stage. Furthermore, model test results were compared with the numerical analysis results for verifying the proposed model test procedure. Also, practical results were derived to verify the stability of a tunnel vis-a-vis cavities through the scaled model test, which assumed spacing distances of 0.25 D, 0.50 D, and 1.00 D between the cavities and tunnel as well as the network state distribution. The spacing distances of 1.0 D is evaluated as the critical distance by the results of model test and numerical analysis.

  • Mapping and precise point determination by photogrammetry have been shown to be an economic solution. But control points are necessary to determine the exterior orientation parameters. Although the number of required control points has been reduced based on extended bundle adjustment and reinforced cross-strip, the ground survey is a significant factor of whole expenses in photogrammetry. The status of GPS-photogrammetry with kinematic DGPS-positioning to overcome this disadvantages, is now steadly progressive since the first possibility has been proved. The completed satellite configuration, powerful receiver function and upgraded software for kinematic DGPS-positioning have extensively improved the accuracy of combined bundle adjustment. So the research for the operational use of GPS-photogrammetry is absolutely necessary. The presented test field was designed for identification of subsidences in a coal mining area, flown with 60% sidelap and cross strips. Just with 6 control points and combined block adjustment instead of the traditionally used 21 horizontal and 81 vertical control points the same ground accuracy has been reached. The accuracy of kinematic GPS-positioning and combined block adjustment was independent upon the distance of the ground reference station. It also has been showed that the special model for the systematic error correction in the combined block adjustment.

Dynamic Interaction of Single and Group Piles in Sloping Ground (경사지반에 설치된 단일말뚝과 무리말뚝의 동적 상호작용)

  • Dynamic behavior of pile foundation is significantly influenced by the dynamic interaction between soil and pile. Especially, in the sloping ground, the soil-pile interaction becomes very complex due to different resistance according to loading direction, soil residual displacement and so on. In this study, dynamic centrifuge tests were performed on the piles in the sloping ground. The model structures consisted of a single pile and 2×2 group pile. The soil-pile interaction has been investigated considering various conditions such as slope, single and group piles, and amplitude of input motions. The phase differences between soil and pile displacement and dynamic p-y curves were evaluated. The analysis results showed that the pile behavior was largely influenced by the kinematic forces between soil and pile. In addition, the dynamic p-y curve showed the complex hysteresis loop due to the effect of slope, residual displacement, and kinematic forces.

Behavior of 2 Arch Tunnel in Sand (사질토지반에서 2 Arch 터널의 거동)

  • This study is focused on finding out the mechanical behavior of pillars and the ground adjacent to the tunnel depending on the central tunnel size and the invert during the construction of 2 arch tunnels in the sandy ground. Model tests were performed in the trap door system, which was composed of 3 separately movable plates. Central pillar was installed on the central movable plate to measure the pillar loads during the excavation of pilot tunnel and the main tunnel. The load-transfer and the loosening load were measured at the bottom plates adjacent to the 2 arch tunnels. The ground settlement and displacement of the tunnel lining were also measured. As results, not only pillar load but also the load transfer mechanism was influenced by the construction sequences, central tunnel size, and the invert.

  • In this study, the behavior of a shallow 2-arch tunnel during the excavation in the sandy ground containing vertical discontinuity plane was experimentally studied. Load transfer mechanism in the pillar caused by a 2-arch tunnel excavation was observed. The position of the vertical discontinuity plane was varied. Model tests were carried out in the normal construction sequence of 2-arch tunnel. Test results-showed that the load transfer caused by the 2-arch tunnel excavation was concentrated in the discontinuity plane, and was cut by the discontinuity plane, so no load transfer took place above the discontinuity plane. It was also shown that the effect of adjacent tunnel excavation on the pillar load and the ground deformation was greater when excavating the upper half-face of the main tunnel, more than when excavating the lower half-face.

Analysis of Position Accuracy for Underground Facility Using RTK-GPS (RTK-GPS를 이용한 지하시설물의 위치 정확도 분석)

  • The complicated facilities on the ground have begun to be laid under the ground as increasing emphasis on the beauty of cities due to centralization. But, as the kind of the facilities have been concentrated on the narrow area, accidents occur due to the difficulty of maintenance and the inaccuracy of location information. In this study, first we constructed the field test model to compare with the method of underground probing. So, we could know that the electromagnetic induction method and GPR(Ground Penetration Radar) are useful. It was acquired the position information for the underground facilities using a RTK-GPS. As the result, we have analyzed the accurate position of the underground facility and show the way improving accuracy in detecting and surveying comparing with the traditional surveying method. Also, we hope to contribute the effective maintenance and prevention of disasters to the underground facility as using underground facilities 3D position with Arcview and building the DB of exact depth and underground facilities information system.
