  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to develop a deicing pavement system using carbon fiber or graphite with high electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity. METHODS: Based on literature reviews, in general, conventional concrete does not exhibit electrical and thermal conductivity. In order to achieve a new physical property, experiments were conducted by adding graphite and carbon fiber to a mortar specimen. RESULTS: The result of the laboratory experiment indicates that the addition of graphite can significantly reduce the compressive strength and improve the thermal conductivity of concrete. In the case of carbon fiber, however, the compressive strength of the concrete is slightly increased, whereas, the thermal conductivity is slightly decreased against the plain mortar irrespective of the length of the carbon fiber. In addition, a mixture of the graphite and carbon fiber can greatly improve the degree of heating test. CONCLUSIONS : Various properties of cement mortar change with the use of carbon fiber or graphite. To enhance the conductivity of concrete for deicing during winter, both carbon fiber and graphite are required to be used simultaneously.

  • To improve heating characteristics of graphite fibers, graphite fibers were copper-plated by electroless plating. The Cu-plated graphite fibers were investigated by thermos-gravimetric analysis in air to calculate quantities of copper on surface of graphite fiber according to plating time. Also, the surface temperature with applied voltage was observed by thermos-graphic camera using a strand of graphite fiber. According to the increment of plating time, the higher quantities of plated copper on graphite fiber were obtained. The electric conductivity of plated graphite fiber for 20 minutes was resulted in 1594.3 S/cm, and surface temperature of this sample showed the maximum temperature $57.2^{\circ}C$. These result could be attributed that copper having great electric conductivity are growing on graphite fiber and followed improving heating characteristics.

  • Graphite fiber intercalated compound was deintercalated at $25^{\circ}C$, 65% of humidity and its deintercalated compound was discussed, based on the X-ray diffraction analysis, electrical resistivity measurement, and UV/VIS spectrometer measurements. During deintercalation, the structure was changed in orderlongrightarrowdisorderlongrightarroworder, and resistivity was decreased in the disorder state of the structure, which reflectance minimum of the UV/VIS spectrum ranged from 660 to 750nm (1.88~1.65eV).

  • In this study, a new paint which is able to resist the cavitation erosion is tried to be developed by using urethane added with nano particles such as multi-wall and single-wall carbon nano tube and spherical and fiber type graphite. The new paint synthesized was characterized with physical properties and resistivity to cavitation erosion($t_{50}$). Among nano particles, fiber type graphite($t_{50}$ 292min) showed high hardness and wear resistance compared with spherical type($t_{50}$ 182min). For carbon nano tube, single-wall type($t_{50}$ 286min) was higher than multi-wall type in wear resistance. Fiber-type graphite was the best nano-particle for paint with resistivity to cavitation erosion. In the application test of paint, the manually painted sample showed surface with smooth but the surface of sample prepared with spray was not smooth. During spray, dust was fixed on the surface.

  • Graphite particle/carbon fiber hybrid conductive polymer composites were fabricated by the compression molding technique. Graphite particles were mixed with an epoxy resin to impart the electrical conductivity in the composite materials. In this study, graphite reinforced conductive polymer composites with high filler loadings were manufactured to accomplish high electrical conductivity above 100S/cm. Graphite particles were the main filler to increase the electrical conductivity of composites by direct contact between graphite particles. While high filler loadings are needed to attain good electrical conductivity, the composites becomes brittle. So carbon fiber was added to compensate weakened mechanical property. With increasing the carbon fiber loading ratio, the electrical conductivity gradually decreased because non-conducting regions were generated in the carbon fiber cluster among carbon fibers, while the flexural strength increased. In the case of carbon fiber 20wt.% of the total system, the electrical conductivity decreased 27%, whereas the flexural strength increased 12%.

  • Friction and Wear behavior of continuous graphite fiber composites was studied for different fiber orientations against the sliding direction. The effect of fiber orientation on friction and wear of the composite and on the deformation of the counterface was investigated experimentally. Pin on disk type testing machine was built and employed to generate the friction and wear data. A graphite fiber composite plate was produced by the bleeder ply molding in an autoclave and machined into rectangular pin specimens with specific fiber orientations, i.e., normal, transverse, and longitudinal directions. Three different wear conditions were employed for two different periods of time, 24 and 48 hours. The wear track of the worn specimens and the metal counterface was examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to observe the damaged fibers on the surface and wear film generation on the counterface. Wear mechanism of the composite during sliding wear is proposed based on the experimental results.

  • Highly conductive bipolar plate for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) was prepared using phenol novolac-type epoxy/graphite powder (GP)/carbon fiber filament (CFF) composite, and a rubber-modified epoxy resin was introduced in order to give elasticity to the bipolar plate graphite fiber (GF) was incorporated in order to improve electrical conductivity. To find out the cure condition of the mixture of novolac-type and rubber-modified epoxies, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was carried out and their data were introduced to Kissinger equation. And tensile and flexural tests were carried out using universal testing machine (UTM) and the surface morphology of the fractured specimen and the interfacial bonding between epoxy matrix and CFF or GF were observed by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

  • Glass fiber drawing from a silica preform is one of the most important processes in optical fiber manufacturing. High purify silica preform of cylindrical shape is fed into the graphite furnace, and then a very thin glass fiber of 125 micron diameter is drawn from the softened and heated preform. A computational analysis is performed to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of preform heating and the glass fiber drawing in the furnace. In addition to the dominant radiative heating of preform by the heating element in the furnace, present analysis also includes the convective heat transport by the gas flowing around the preform that experiences neck-dawn profile and the freshly drawn glass fiber at high fiber drawing speed. The computational results present the effects of gas flow on the temperature of preform and glass fiber as well as the neck-down profile of preform.

  • The effet of glass fiber and graphite on the wear properies in tin-bronze alloy matrix composites was studied by a pin-on-disk type wear testing machine. The results obtained from the wear test were analized by SEM observations of worn surfaces of pins and disks and EPMA composition measurments. The amount of wear was devreased as increasing the content of glass fiber in matrix, since the alloy matrix was reinforced by glass fibers. The wear mechanism of the matrix specimen without glass fibers was proved as the contact area delamination. Oxide layer formed on sliding surface led to the increasing wear resistance. Specimens containing graphite particles showed an lubrication effect to counter disks.
