Graphite oxide (GO) was produced using the modified Hummer's method. Poly(p-phenylene sulfide) (PPS)/reduced graphite oxide (RGO) composites were prepared by in situ polymerization method. The electrical conductivity of the PPS/RGO composites was no more than 82 S/m. It was found that as GO content increased in the PPS/RGO composites, the crystallization temperature and electrical conductivity of the composites increased and the percolation threshold value was at 5-8 wt% of GO content.
A carbon fiber(CF) reinforced Cu-10%Sn alloy matrix composite was successfully fabricated by squeeze casting method employing preheated graphite mold and proper process controlling factors. The matrix solidification microstructure of the Cu-10%Sn/CF composite reveals ${\alpha}-dendrite$ and ${\alpha}+{\delta}$ eutectoid. To compare the squeeze cast Cu-10%Sn/CF compostie with PM route fabricated Cu-graphite composites for electric contact material, mechanical wear and electrical arc wear tests were performed. Mechanical wear rate of the Cu-10%Sn/CF is much lower than that of the Cu-graphite composite. Weight loss with a variation of contact number in electrical arc wear tests shows a similar trend between the squeeze cast Cu-10%Sn/CF and PM Cu-graphite composites.
Composite bipolar plates offer several advantages of low cost, light weight, and ease of manufacturing compared to traditional graphite plate. However, it is difficult to achieve both high electrical conductivity and high flexural strength. In this study, the hybrid carbons filled epoxy composite bipolar plates were fabricated to test electrical conductivity and flexural properties. Graphite powders were used as the main conducting filler and continuous carbon fiber fabrics were inserted to improve the mechanical properties of the composite. This hybrid composite showed improved in-plane electrical conductivity and flexural property. The moldability of the hybrid composite was also improved comparing to the continuous prepreg composite. This study suggested that the continuous carbon fiber inserted graphite/epoxy composites can be a potential candidate material to overcome the disadvantages of conventional graphite composite or continuous prepreg composite bipolar plates.
Fracture of uni-directional carbon fiber reinforced carbon matrix composite is strongly dependent on the orientation of basal plane in graphite matrix when it is limited within matrix. The orientation of basal planes are vertically stacked to carbon fiber which results in the weakness for applied tensile or shear force in thermosetting resin derived-carbon matrix composite. Microtextural control of the matrix was tried through chemical interaction between metal carbides and furan resin derived-carbon matrix. SiC and TiO2 addition made the orientation disordered. However, porosity increased due to decomposition of SiC. Interfacial bonding could be controlled by TiO2 addition, but carbon fiber was considerably reacted with TiC during thermal treatment higher than 2$600^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it is desirable to control the thermal treatment temperature at which decomposition of SiC was not serious and TiC/C was not formed eutectoid.
In high carbon steels, the cementite phase is more unstable thermally than graphite, and it can lead to a marked deterioration in the formability. Many studies have been carried out to evaluate the effect of the fundamental elements on the graphitization of cementite in high carbon steels. In this present work, the effect of Mn, Cr addition on graphitization in Fe-0.65%C-1.0%Si steel has been investigated by means of hardness testing, optical microscopy and EPMA. The nucleation of graphite may mostly depend on the dissolution rate of cementite into ferrite and the number of the nucleation sites of graphite. The graphitization was promoted by the addition of 0.1%Mn in high carbon steel, but retarded by more addition than 0.5% of Mn. By the more addition of Cr than 0.1%, the graphitization of high carbon steel was strongly retarded. Because Mn was moderate anti-graphitizer, but Cr was stroug anti-graphitizer.
This study investigates the effect of filler content (wt%), presence of interphase and agglomerates on the effective Young's modulus of polypropylene (PP) based nanocomposites reinforced with exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets ($xGnP^{TM}$) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The Young's modulus of the composites is determined using tensile testing based on ASTM D638. The reinforcement/polymer interphase is characterized in terms of width and mechanical properties using atomic force microscopy which is also used to investigate the presence and size of agglomerates. It is found that the interphase has an average width of ~30 nm and modulus in the range of 5 to 12 GPa. The Halpin-Tsai micromechanical model is modified to account for the effect of interphase and filler agglomerates and the model predictions for the effective modulus of the composites are compared to the experimental data. The presented results highlight the need of considering various experimentally observed filler characteristics such as agglomerate size and aspect ratio and presence and properties of interphase in the micromechanical models in order to develop better design tools to fabricate multifunctional polymer nanocomposites with engineered properties.
The size and the physical properties of graphene oxide sheets were controlled by changing the oxidation temperature of graphite. Graphite oxide (GO) samples were prepared at different oxidation temperatures of $20^{\circ}C$, $27^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$ using a modified Hummers' method. The carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio and the average size of the GO sheets varied according to the oxidation temperature: 1.26 and 12.4 ${\mu}m$ at $20^{\circ}C$, 1.24 and 10.5 ${\mu}m$ at $27^{\circ}C$, and 1.18 and 8.5 ${\mu}m$ at $35^{\circ}C$. This indicates that the C/O ratio and the average size of the graphene oxide sheets respectively increase as the oxidation temperature decreases. Moreover, it was observed that the surface charge and optical properties of the graphene oxide sheets could be tuned by changing the temperature. This study demonstrates the tunability of the physical properties of graphene oxide sheets and shows that the properties depend on the functional groups generated during the oxidation process.
Thermal dissipation was investigated for poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) composite films containing graphite and multi wall carbon nanotube(CNT) powders as filler materials. After mixing PMMA with fillers, solvent, and dispersant, the pastes were prepared by passing through a three roll mill for three times. The prepared pastes were coated $15{\sim}40{\mu}m$ thick on a side of 0.4 mm thick aluminium alloy plate and dried for 30 min at $150^{\circ}C$ in an oven. The content of fillers in dried films was varied as 1, 2, and 5 weight % maintaining the ratio of graphite and CNT as 1:1. Raman spectra from three different samples exhibited D, G and 2D peaks, as commonly observed in graphite and multi wall CNT. Among those peaks, D peak was prominent, which manifested the presence of defects in carbon materials. Thermal emissivity values of three samples were measured as 0.916, 0.934, and 0.930 with increasing filler content, which were the highest ever reported for the similar composite films. The thermal conductivities of three films were measured as 0.461, 0.523, and $0.852W/m{\cdot}K$, respectively. After placing bare Al plate and film coated samples over an opening of a polystyrene box maintained for 1 h at $92^{\circ}C$, the temperatures inside and outside of the box were measured. Outside temperatures were lower by $5.4^{\circ}C$ in the case of film coated plates than the bare one, and inside temperatures of the former were lower by $3.6^{\circ}C$ than the latter. It can be interpreted that the PMMA composite film coated Al plates dissipate heat quicker than the bare Al plate.
