In this work, various electron microscopy and analysis techniques were used to investigate the microstructural evolution of a 9% Cr tempered martensite ferritic (TMF) steel T91 upon ultrasonic nanocrystalline surface modification (UNSM) treatment. The micro-dimpled surface was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The characteristics of plastic deformation and gradient microstructure of the UNSM treated specimens were clearly revealed by crystal orientation mapping of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), with flexible use of the inverse pole figure, image quality, and grain boundary misorientation images. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation of the specimens at different depths showed the formation of dislocations, dense dislocation walls, subgrains, and grains in the lower, middle, upper, and top layers of the treated specimens. Refinement of the $M_{23}C_6$ precipitates was also observed, the size and the number density of which were found to decrease as depth from the top surface decreased. The complex microstructure and microstructural evolution of the TMF steel samples upon the UNSM treatment were well-characterized by combined use of EBSD and TEM techniques.
This study investigated the effect of moisture content and loading direction on dowel bearing strength of two types of SCL. Dowel bearing tests of LVL and PSL were conducted with two different MC level, 7.5% and 19%, and two different oriention, L-direction(loading parallel to grain) and X-direction(loading perpendicular to grain). Most of specimens showed typical load-deformation curves and intersected 5% offset line. Failure modes were classified into two categories; spliting(for L-direction specimens) and peeling(for X-direction specimens). Dowel bearing strength generally decreased with increasing MC. The decreasing rate was more significant in X-directon. ESG also decreased with increasing MC, and the ratio of ESG of 7.5% versus 19% was about 1.47. Dowel bearing strength of LVL and PSL in L-direction was higher than that of X-direction. This results indicated that MC and loading orientation had a significant effect on dowel bearing strength of SCL. The average dowel bearing strength of LVL were higher than that of PSL in each loading direction. Two types of probability distribution model were chosen to quantify strength distribution, normal and 2-parameter weibull distribution. The two models showed good agreement with the data, especially in lower tail of the cumulative distribution. Normal and 2-parameter weibull distribution seemed to proper model of the dowel bearing strength for each MC levels.

AGZO thin films were deposited on glass substrates using RF magnetron sputtering system under Ar flow rates, and their structural, electrical, and optical properties were analyzed systematically. As a result of the XRD pattern, the peak of the (002) (2θ≈33.7˚) orientation was observed, and it was found to have a hexagonal wurtzite structure. The sheet resistance of Ar 5 sccm was 3.073×102 Ω/sq and showed the best electrical properties because of the improvement of mobility due to the increase of the grain size and the variation of RMS roughness. In addition, the average transmittance was more than 90% for all samples, which demonstrated good optical properties. It is expected that the TCO characteristics can be improved by controlling Ar flow rates, and this will increase the efficiency of photoelectronic devices such as OLED and solar cells.
Molybdenum-tungsten (Mo-W) alloy sputtering targets are widely utilized in fields like electronics, nanotechnology, sensors, and as gate electrodes for TFT-LCDs, owing to their superior properties such as high-temperature stability, low thermal expansion coefficient, electrical conductivity, and corrosion resistance. To achieve optimal performance in application, these targets' purity, relative density, and grain size of these targets must becarefully controlled. We utilized nanopowders, prepared via the Pechini method, to obtain uniform and fine powders, then carried out spark plasma sintering (SPS) to densify these powders. Our studies revealed that the sintered compacts made from these nanopowders exhibited outstanding features, such as a high relative density of more than 99%, consistent grain size of 3.43 ㎛, and shape, absence of preferred orientation.
We have investigated the effects of an external magnetic field on the growth direction and the grain size of electrochemically prepared CoPtP alloys. Electrodeposited CoPtP alloys were synthesized by appling an external magnetic field with 0 to 1 T to the perpendicular direction of the films. In the electrodeposited CoPtP alloys without external magnetic field, the growth direction of the alloys was mixed by fcc (111) and hop (002), but only hop (002) was observed in the alloys with 1 T external magnetic field. CoPtP alloys were grown as the columnar growth and the grain size increases with growing the alloys. With appling an external field, the grain size of the alloys was controlled less than 20 nm which is smaller than single domain of Co, and the easy axis of alloys, hcp (002) direction, was grown perpendicular to the films up to 200 nm. We could obtain the optimal thickness of the alloys and electrodeposition condition from the above results. Coercivity and squareness of CoPtP alloys taken out-of-plane are 6.1 kOe and 0.9, respectively. The magnetic properties of CoPtP alloys were measured by VSM, and the microstructural characterization and crystalline orientation measurement of the alloys were carried out by TEM and XRD.
In order to improve the microstructure of the strip cast Nd-Fe-B alloys that are frequently used for production of high energy sintered magnets, influence of various strip casting conditions on the microstructure and phase formation and distribution were investigated. Nd-Fe-B strips consisting of microstructures suitable for preparation of high energy sintered magnets could be obtained when the wheel speed was below 5 m/s. The compositional limit that can avoid the crystallization of free iron in the as-cast state was estimated to be Nd$\_$14/Fe$\_$79/B$\_$7/. Regardless of the compositional variation, <001> preferred orientation of Nd$_2$Fe$\_$14/B normal to the strip surface was always occurred below 5 m/s, which would eventually enhance the grain alignment during pressing the powder under a magnetic field. While the coercivity of the strip cast alloys increased with the increase of the wheel speed, mainly due to the refinement of Nd$_2$Fe$\_$14/B grains, it decreased with the reduction of Nd content in the alloy composition as the formation of free iron increased.

This paper describes the mean grain size and shear strength properties related to subsidence characteristics using sediment samples and acoustic images obtained from artificial reef areas in Tongyoung and Jangsungpo offshore. The acoustic images collected from chirp sonar and side scan sonar show well the attitude/orientation, the distribution pattern, and the degree of subsidence of artificial reefs, suggesting the possibility of suitable site investigation and the management of the reefs using acoustic sonar. The sediments were largely composed of clayey silt and silty clay. The mean grain sizes in Tongyoung and Jangsungpo offshore show the ranges of 5${\sim}$9${\Phi}$ and 8${\sim}$9${\Phi}$, respectively. The shear strength was significantly increased at the depths of 20cm in Tongyoung offshore and 80cm in Jangsungpo offshore, corresponding to the subsidence depth of artificial reefs. The relationship between mean grain size and shear strength did not show a correlation, suggesting the shear strength does not totally depend on mean grain size. Provided subsidence characteristics with respect to various artificial reefs and seabed condition are investigated in more details, the constructing area of the reef can be more extended.
Grain-oriented electrical steel sheets are mainly used as core materials for transformers and motors. They should have excellent magnetic properties such as low core loss, high magnetic flux density and high permeability. In order to improve the magnetic properties of the electrical steel sheet, it is important to form Goss oriented grains with a very strong {110}<001> orientation. Recently, efforts have been made to develop Goss grains by controlling processes such as hot rolling, cold rolling, and primary and secondary recrystallization. In this study, the sheets containing 3.2 and 3.4wt.% Si were used, which were rolled with 1 and 10 passes with total thickness reduction of 89%. Heating was carried out for primary recrystallization with different heating rates of $25^{\circ}C/s$ and $24^{\circ}C/min$ until $720^{\circ}C$. The behavior of Goss-, {411}<148>-, and {111}<112>-oriented grains were analyzed using X-ray diffraction(XRD) and electron back-scatter diffraction(EBSD) analysis. The area fraction of Goss-oriented grains increased with the number of rolling passes during cold rolling; however, after the primary recrystallization, the area fraction of the Goss grains was higher and exact Goss grains were found in the specimens subjected to rapid heating after one rolling pass.
Silicon ion implantation was performed to LPCVD amorphous Si films and the low temperature annealing process followed with various conditions to find the optimal physical properties by studying recrystallization behavior. The uniformity of the recrystallized films was inspected by optical microscopy and for this purpose, new KOH: (IPA) : $H_2$O: $K_2$C${r_2}{O_7}$, etchant was developed. XRD and TEM results showed that the crystallites were grown as a form of dendrite with (111) preferred orientation, and the grain size was increased with dose concentration. The maximum grain size was obtained when the 3${\times}{10^{15}}$c$m^2$ implanted amorphous Si film was recrystallized at 55 $0^{\circ}C$for more than 40 hrs and at this condition the grain size was 3.2${\mu}$m.
Jurassic granite from Hapcheon was analysed with respect to the characteristics of the rock cleavage. The phases of distribution of microcracks were well evidenced from the enlarged photomicrographs(${\times}6.7$) of the thin section. The planes of principal set of microcracks are parallel to the rift plane and those of secondary set are parallel to the grain plane. These rift and grain microcracks are mutually near-perpendicular on the hardway planes. Consequently the rock cleavage of Jurassic granite from the studied quarry can be related to the preferred orientation of microcracks. Microcrack parameters such as number, length and density show an order of rift > grain > hardway. These results indicate a relative magnitude of the rock cleavage. Meanwhile, brazilian tensile strengths were measured with respect to the six directions. The results revealed a strong correlation between mechanical property with microcrack parameters.
