  • Homogeneous, compositionally graded, and superlattice-like silicon oxynitride(SiON) dielectric layers, with the refractive index varying from 1.46 to 2.05 as a function of film thickness, were grown by computer-controlled plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using silane, nitrogen, and nitrous oxide reactant gases. An antireflection(AR) coating and thin-film electroluminescent(TFEL) devices with multiple dielectrics were designed and fabricated using real time control of reactant gases of the PECVD system.

  • A new method to control the free spectral range of a long period fiber grating is proposed and theoretically analyzed. As the refractive index decreases radially outward in the silica cladding due to graded doping of fluorine, waveguide dispersion in the cladding modes was modified to result in the effective indices change and subsequently the phase matching conditions for coupling with the core mode in a long period fiber grating. Enlargement of the free spectral range in a long period fiber grating was theoretically confirmed.

  • We investigated the influences of dielectric thin film coating on the optical characteristics of c-Si wafers with nanocone (NC) arrays using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. Dielectric thin films on high-refractive-index surface can lower optical reflection and reflection dips appear at the wavelengths where destructive interference occurs. The optical reflection of the NC arrays was lower than that of the dielectric-coated planar wafer in broad wavelength range. Remarkable antireflection effects of the NC array could be attributed to beneficial roles of the NCs, including the graded refractive index, multiple reflection, diffraction, and Mie resonance. Dielectric thin films modified the optical reflection spectra of the NC arrays, which could not be explained by the interference alone. The optical properties of the dielectric-coated NC arrays were determined by the inherent optical characteristics of the NC arrays.

  • Planar graded index optical waveguides have been formed by Ag$^{+}$ ion exchange in the BK7 optical glass. The experimental results of diffusion and modal characteristics of Ag$^{+}$-Na$^{+}$ exchanged BK7 glass waveguides are presented. Measurements of the mode indices have been measured. We found the relations between the process and device parameters such as the diffusion depth and the square root of the diffusion time, diffusion coefficient and diffusion temperature, and diffusion ion concentration and surface index change. A theoretical gaussian function refractive index profile matched best with the measured data for all the guided modes. The empirical relations between the process and the device parameters are derived and subsequently used to formulate a systematic procedure for fabricating singlemode and multimode waveguides.uides.

• Polymer optical fibers (POFs) are being considered as important high-speed communication media in the area of local area networks, datalinks and optical sensors. Large core diameter (500~1000 $\mu$m) and large numerical aperture (0.2~0.9) in a POF allow easy processing and connectorization, low cost high efficiency of beam coupling from LDs or LEDs, and complete immunity to EMI/EMR. There are many reports about 2.5 Gbps transmission the polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) graded index (GI) POF over a distance of 100 m. (omitted)

  • An omni-directional, graded-index and textured ZnO nanorods with $MgF_2$ anti-reflective(AR) coating films for the electro optical tracking system(EOTS) by e-beam evaporation method are presented. we achieved that the graded index structure can minimize image tracking interference of EOTS which is comparable to a general AR coating films. Optimized ZnO nanorods with $MgF_2$ AR coating films lead to decreasing Fresnel reflection by gradient refractive index. According to our experiment results, ZnO nanorods with $MgF_2$ AR coating films can be used for various electro optical system to improve the optical performance.

  • Si nanowires have exhibited unique optical characteristics, including nano-antenna effects due to the guided mode resonance, significant optical absorption enhancement in wide wavelength and incident angle range due to resonant optical modes, graded refractive index, and scattering. Since Si poor optical absorption coefficient due to indirect bandgap, all such properties have stimulated proposal of new optoelectronic devices whose performance can surpass that of conventional planar devices. We have carried out finite-difference time-domain simulation studies to design optimal Si nanowire array for solar cell applications. Optical reflectance, transmission, and absorption can be calculated for nanowire arrays with various diameter, length, and period. From the absorption, maximum achievable photocurrent can be estimated. In real devices, serious recombination loss occurring at the surface states is known to limit the photovoltaic performance of the nanowire-based solar cells. In order to address such issue, we will discuss how the geometric parameters of the array can influence the spatial distribution of the optical field (resulting optical generation rate) in the nanowires.

  • In this paper, a simple scheme of optical interconnections between M input and N output terminals using mode speckle patterns generated in the mulitmode optical fiber is described. It is shown that fully parallel nonblocking interconnections are accomplished by using properly generated mode speckle patterns as destination codes and dectecting the generated mode speckle patterns separately using M multiplexed Vander Lugt matched filters at each output terminal. The orthogonality condition of mode speckle patterns is investigated by either changing the launching angles or rotating the polarization direction of the beam. Preliminary experiments by use of a 4$\times$4 graded refractive-index multimode fiber coupler whose core diameter was 50 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were performed to show the feasibility of our scheme.

  • We report experimental results on 940-nm 350-mW AlGaAs/InGaAs transverse single-mode laser diodes (LDs) adopting graded-index separate confinement heterostructures (GRIN-SCH) and p,n-clad asymmetric structures, with improved temperature and small-divergence beam characteristics under high-output-power operation, for a three-dimensional (3D) motion-recognition sensor. The GRIN-SCH design provides good carrier confinement and prevents current leakage by adding a grading layer between cladding and waveguide layers. The asymmetric design, which differs in refractive-index distribution of p-n cladding layers, reduces the divergence angle at high-power operation and widens the transverse mode distribution to decrease the power density around emission facets. At an optical power of 350 mW under continuous-wave (CW) operation, Gaussian narrow far-field patterns (FFP) are measured with the full width at half maximum vertical divergence angle to be 18 degrees. A threshold current (Ith) of 65 mA, slope efficiency (SE) of 0.98 mW/mA, and operating current (Iop) of 400 mA are obtained at room temperature. Also, we could achieve catastrophic optical damage (COD) of 850 mW and long-term reliability of 60℃ with a TO-56 package.
