  • As a practical method to produce the carbonaceous binder, the destructive distillation of coal tar has been studied. The optimum condition on binder in various temp. and cutting time were examined and the compositions of pitch were also examined in connection with ${\alpha},\;{\beta}\;and\;{\gamma}$ by solvent extraction. Coke powder was mixed with binder as treated pitch in the proportions of 77% of coke to 23% of pitch, to give a plastic mix which could then be pressed into molding. The properties of baked body after molding was tested. It was found that cutting of the coal tar at 350${\circ}C$, for 30 min., at 300${\circ}C$. for 1 hr., and at 250${\circ}C$. for 8 hrs. were good condition. Particularly, we found that the cutting of the coal tar obtained by destructive distillation at high temp. and in minimum period of time had shown the best condition for utilization of carbonaceous pitch as binder. The above mentioned cutting condition results in good quality of pitch which is available to be used as binder in carbon industry.

  • An electrochemical evaluation on the corrosion resistance for heavy anticorrosive paint was carried out for 5 kinds of heavy anticorrosive paints such as High solid epoxy(HE), Solvent epoxy(SE), Tar epoxy(TE), Phenol epoxy(PE), and Ceramic epoxy(CE) as parameters of DFT(Dry Film Thickness, 25${\mu}m$50${\mu}m$, solution condition(Flow of Nonflow). Corrosion current density of HE(DFT 50${\mu}m$ in case of flow condition was larger than that of nonflow condition. However, their values of the other anticorrosive paints were decreased compared to the nonflow condition. The values of AC impedance were increased with increasing of DFT regardless of kinds of anticorrosive paints. And the polarization resistance of cyclic voltammogram showed a good tendency to correspond with well the values of AC impedance measurement. HE and CE had a relatively good corrosion resistance than other heavy anticorrosive paint.

  • We studied the molecular shapes and structural characteristics of a 33-armed, star polystyrene (PS-33A) and two $3^{rd}$-generation, dendrimer-like, star-branched poly(methyl methacrylate)s with different architectures (pMMA-G3a and PMMA-3Gb) and 32 end-branches under good solvent and theta ($\Theta$) solvent conditions by using synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The SAXS analyses were used to determine the structural details of the star PS and dendrimer-like, star-branched PMMA polymers. PS-33A had a fuzzy-spherical shape, whereas PMMA-G3a and PMMA-G3b had fuzzy-ellipsoidal shapes of similar size, despite their different chemical architectures. The star PS polymer's arms were more extended than those of linear polystyrene. Furthermore, the branches of the dendrimer-like, star-branched polymers were more extended than those of the star PS polymer, despite having almost the same number of branches as PS-33A. The differences between the internal chain structures of these materials was attributed to their different chemical architectures.

  • To renew interest in Chrysanthemum boreale as a traditional food material, response surface methodology was used for optimizing extraction conditions and monitoring physicochemical properties of ethanol extracts from Chrysanthemum petal. The phenolic compounds of ethanol extracts were minimized in 87ml/g(solvent per sample), 21%(ethanol concentration), and 15 hours(extraction time). The physicochemical properties of ethanol extracts were maximized in the conditions of 115ml/g, 98% and 16 hours on yellow color intensity, 143ml/g, 75% and 19 hours on carotenoid content, and 148ml/g, 53% and 18 hours on soluble solid content. Optimum ranges of extraction condition for physicochemical properties of Chrysanthemum boreale were 130~150ml/g, 70~85% and 20~28 hours, respectively. Predicted values at the optimum extraction condition were in good agreement with experimental values.

  • The possibility of applying poulticing was studied for removing Paraloid B72, a resin used for fixing an earthen mural painting. Five types of poultices were selected from clay and gel types, and acetone, ethanol, and methyl ethyl ketone(MEK) were used as mixed solvents. The possibility of mixing between the poultice and solvent was investigated, and then the spreadability, fluidity, acidity, drying properties, and solubility of the poultices were examined to confirm the characteristics. A poultice agent, which is suitable for applying to a mural painting, was selected and applied to a painting layer sample coated with Paraloid B72. As a result, all painting layers were good condition at under 50% of the solvent. The removal efficiency of Paraloid B72 was more effective when most of the solvents were used at 50%, rather than at 25%. However, it is difficult to mix 50% of MEK and ethanol with the gel-type poultices. When used at 25%, the removal performance was poorer than that at 50%, but the mixing with all the poultices was successful. In addition, the adsorption and removal power of the gel-type poultice were better than those of the clay-type, but the latter was expected to be more suitable in short-time cases due to its high drying speed. The results of this study show that the dissolution performance varies depending on the poultices and solvents. Hence, the poultice and solvent should be selectively applied, considering the fixative of the mural to be removed.

  • A method for the multiresidual simultaneous analysis of 11 thiocarbamates was studied using HPLC. Thiocarbamate in Chinese cabbage was analyzed in the order of extraction, partition, and cleanup in their optimum condition. Acetone was chosen as an extracting solvent. As a partitioning solvent, the mixture of 50% methylene chloride and petroleum ether containing extremely small water content showed good recoveries of thiocarbamate from the water layer. Partition efficiency was affected by pH of the water layer; it remained almost constant under the acidic and neutral condition while decreasing under the basic condition. The comparison done in cleanup step showed that the column chromatographic method is superior to the treatment of coagulating reagent. As an absorbent, the mixture of charcoal, magnesia, and celite with the ratio of 1 : 2 : 4 gave better recoveries and also effectively removed chlorophyll. Over the total procedure, the average recoveries for thiocarbamates in Chinese cabbage were 91% at about 2 ppm fortification level within the relative standard deviation of 8%, and the minimum detection limit (MDL) was 2.2${\sim}$9.3 ng.

  • Hesperidin, which is the most abundant flavonoid of Citrus unshiu (Rutaceae), has been reported to possess diverse activities and widely used as functional foods and cosmetics. For the development of functional products, extraction procedure is indispensable. Extraction conditions affect the composition of extract as well as its biological activity. Therefore, we tried to optimize extraction conditions such as extraction solvent, extraction time and extraction temperature for maximum yield of hesperidin using response surface methodology with threelevel-three-factor Box-Behnken design (BBD). Regression analysis showed a good fit of the experimental data and the optimal condition was obtained as ethanol concentration, 59.0%; temperature $71.5^{\circ}C$ and extraction time, 12.4 h. The hesperidin yield under the optimal condition was found to be $287.8{\mu}g$ per 5 mg extract, which was well matched with the predicted value of 290.5 μg. These results provides optimized extraction condition for hesperidin and might be useful for the development of hesperidin as functional products like health supplements, cosmetics and medicinal products.

  • N-Propylsulfamic acid supported onto magnetic $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles (MNPs-PSA) was used as an efficient and magnetically recoverable catalyst for synthesis of 2H-Indazolo[2,1-b]phthalazine-1,6,11(13H)-trione derivatives from the three-component, one-pot condensation reaction of phthalhydrazide, aromatic aldehydes and cyclic 1,3-diones, in good to excellent yields at $100^{\circ}C$ under solvent-free conditions. The catalyst was easily separated with the assistance of an external magnetic field from the reaction mixture and reused for several consecutive runs without significant loss of its catalytic efficiency. In order to compare, the synthesis of 2H-Indazolo[ 2,1-b]phthalazine-1,6,11(13H)-trione derivatives in the presence of catalytic amount of sulfamic acid (SA) under same reaction condition was also reported.
