The testis is major male gonad responsible for spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis. Much knowledge is still remained to be learned about the control of these events. In this study, we performed a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis on 1,196 mouse testis proteins screened from public protein database. Integrated function and pathway analysis were performed through Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery (DAVID) and ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA), and significant features were clustered. Protein membrane organization and gene density on chromosomes were analyzed and discussed. The enriched bioinformatics analysis could provide clues and basis to the development of diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets for infertility and male contraception.

The number of chronosomes and karyotypes in eight species of the family Bradybaenidae were analyzed by air-drying method using gonad. The mitotic haploid chromosome numbers of Acusta despecta sieboldiana were 29 and conisisted of 12 pairs metacentric, 17 pairs submetacentric chromosomes. The mitotic haploid chromosomes were 29 and 11 pairs metacentric and 17 pairs submetacentric and 1 pair telocentric chromosomes in Koreanohadra kurodana; 29 and 10 pairs metacentric chromosomes in K. koreana' 29 and 10 pairs metacentric and 18 pairs submetacentric, and 1 pair acrocentric chromosomes in Karaftohelix adamsi; 28and 10 pairs metacentric, and 18 pairs submetacintric chromosomes in Aegista chosenica; 28 and 14 pairs metacentric and 14 pairs submetacentric chromosomes in A.(Plectotropis) diversa; 28 and 15 pairs metacentric, 10 pairs submetacentric and 3 pairs acrocentric chromosomes in A. (p.)quelpartinsis; 29 and 12 pairs metacentric and 9 pairs submetacentric and 2 pairs telocentric chromosomes in Nesiohelix samarangae.

Effects of nonylphenol (NP) on gonadal development and growth of olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus were investigated. NP treatment was carried out to fry fish (during 55 to 64 days after hatching) using oral adminstration at nominal NP concentrations of 50, 100 and 150 tig/g BW Gonad before NP treatment was sexually undifferentiated as observed with mostly gonia cells. At 159 days after hatching, ovarian lamella of ovary were filled with oogonia and perinucleolus oocytes. On the other hand, testicular lobules of the testis were occupied by spermatogonia, spermatocytes and spermatids. Histological observation of ovary and testis development was any different between the control and NP treated groups. However, growth was significantly increased in NP treated groups than control groups (P< 0.05). These results considerate that NP has any effect for sex differentiation and gonadal development, but act for early growth in olive flounder.

Lectins have great potential as to determine the alternation of the distribution of cell surface carbohydrates during cellular development and differentiation. Here, we investigated the presence and distribution of cell surface carbohydrates on chicken primordial germ cells (PGCs) during the migration and gonadal stages using a variety of lectins. A total of six FITC-labelled lectins from several specificity classes were used: ConA (glucose/mannose), WGA (N-acetylglucosamine), STA (N-acetylglucosamine), DBA (N-acetylgalactosamine/galactose), UEA-I (fucose) and PHA-E (oilgosaccharide). As a results, PGC-specific binding was observed in STA. PGCs of migration stage (2.5- and 5.5-day embyos) were STA-positive whereas PGCs of 10-day embryonic gonad were not. The results suggest that N-acetylglucosamine residuse are present specifically in migrating chicken PGCs and changes during development.

In order to analyze chromosome numbers and karyotypes of intestinal trematodes belonging to the genus, Metagonimus, the gonad tissues of M. takahashii, M. miyatai, and M. yokogawai were prepared and examined. The number of bivalents in the first meiotic division of M. takahashii was nine (n＝9). The diploid number of M. miyatai was observed to be eighteen (2n＝18) and their chromosomes consisted of one pair of metacentric, 7 pairs of submetacentric, and one pair of telocentric chromosomes. The diploid number of M. yokogawai was thirty-two (2n＝32) and the chromosome complements were composed of two pairs of metacentric, 11 pairs of submetacentric, and three pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes. These results could be a supporting evidence for the validity of the new species, M. miyatai, distinct from M. yokogawai.

Malignant germ cell tumors which have the same morphological appearance as germinal tumor of the gonad are sometimes found in the anterior mediastinum. Pure endodermal sinus tumor among them is very rare. It is highly malignant and usually extensively invasive at the time of surgical consideration. The prognosis is poor, but improvements in systemic chemotherapy regimens may improved the outlook. A case of primary endodermal sinus tumor of the mediastinum was presented. He was a 23-year-old male with anterior chest pain, tenderness and exertional dyspnea for 1 month. The tumor was well encapsulated and adhered to pericardium. The microscopic appearance was indistinguishable from that of the analogous gonadal neoplasm. The patient has treated with combination of surgery and radiotherapy as daily 180 rad for 6 weeks schedule, and then has follow up about 3 months with early recurrence.

The reproduction of animals is a way to maintain their species and demands a large amount of energy. The golden hamsters are seasonal breeders whose reproductive activities are regulated by photoperiod (length of day time in a day). The photic information received is transported to the pineal gland via many steps. Melatonin produced by the pineal gland affects the reproductive neuroendocrine system to manage reproductive activities. The major regulator neurons, secreting gonadotropin-releasing hormone, integrate all kinds of information to govern the reproductive frame hypothalamuspituitary-gonad axis. The elements impinging on the neurons are recently outspread. Thus the present review is to briefly survey the elements discovered newly and subjected to the active research realm and their correlations, focusing on the regulation of reproduction in mainly male golden hamsters as a representative animal.

Ultrastructural changes of the testis in Pieris rapae L. observed under the electron microscope during the metamorphosis from prepupa to pupa. The peritoneal sheath, epithelium of the follicle and cucticle have the maximum thickness at prepupa stage and afterthen gradually they began to degenerate. The epithelium of the follicle which formed by invagination of the peritoneal sheath is differently differentiationed from the peritoneal sheath and it is similar to the adult's from the pupa 2 days. The cell organelles begin to increase in the cytoplasm of the cyst cell enclosed the sperm bundles at pupa 3 hrs. The electron densed granules which observed in the peritoneal sheath and epithelium of the follicle at prepupa seem to be related with fusion of the testis.

We examined the sex ratio, and insemination rate of Parapenaeus fissuroides and Parapenaeus lanceolatus using samples collected near Cheju Island, Korea, in January 2005. Females were more numerous than males in both species, and based on the gonad color pattern, sex ratio, and insemination rate, the spawning period of these shrimps was determined to be during winter.
