  • It is necessary to study about moment performance of glulam-dowel connections which had been applied rotation. To analyze and predict the moment performance, angled to grain load was replaced with parallel to grain load and perpendicular to grain load. The dowel bending strength and dowel bearing strength were tested. And tensile strength test for connections of two different end distances was performed. Specimens of rotation test were composed with different drift pin numbers and drift pin arrangement. Connection deformation was occurred by plastic behavior of drift pin after yield when tensile load applied at connection. And the absorbing drift pin deflection by end distance continued the connection deformation. When rotation applied at connection that 2 drift pins were arranged parallel to grain (b2h), it showed similar performance with tensile perpendicular to grain. And connection that 2 drift pins were arranged perpendicular to grain (b2v) showed similar performance with tensile parallel to grain. Connection capacity that 4 drift pins were arranged rectangular (b4) showed 1.7 times as strong as connection that 2 drift pins were arranged parallel to grain (b2h). These results agreed predicted values and it is available that rotation replaced with tensile load.

  • In order to evaluate the bond performance of domestic larch glulam and the glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) rod, the specimen with the GFRP rod bonded-in domestic larch glulam for pull-out test was produced. The test was carried out using various specimens with different gluing depth, width of glue-line and type of adhesive. The cantilever type rahmen structure specimen with bonded-in GFRP rods was produced based on the result of pull-out test, and its moment resistance performance was compared and examined with the moment resistance performance of slotted-in steel plate specimen. As a result of the pull-out test, the most excellent bond performance was found when the insertion depth of GFRP rods was 5 times larger than the diameter of GFRP rods. When the glue-line thickness was 1 mm, the bond performance improved by 17%~29% in comparison to the bond performance in the case of the glue-line thickness of 2 mm. Also, the bonded strength of the specimen used with poly-urethane adhesive was 2.9~4.0 times greater than the bonded strength of specimen used with resorcinol adhesive. The cantilever type rahmen structure specimen with bonded-in GFRP rods showed the moment resistance performance 0.82 times lower in comparison to the slotted-in steel plate specimen used with the drift pin, but the initial stiffness was similar as 0.93 times.

  • This study was carried out to investigate whether adhesive used in manufacturing glulam can be used to bond wood and GFRP, when considering working process and economical efficiency. The six different glulams were manufactured, changing the adhesives and the mixing ratios of the adhesives, and investigated by the block shear test and the delamination of the water soaking or boiling water soaking. The three glulams were manufactured, using the resocinol resin based adhesive, the PVAc resin based adhesive and the epoxy resin adhesive, and the other three glulams, using the adhesives mixing resocinol resin and PVAc resin. The block shear strength is higher than $7.1N/mm^2$ in all types, which is standard of KS F3021. However, in the wood failure the block shear strength was the highest as 65.9% in the PVAc. The delamination of glulams glued with PVAc adhesive, which was 1.08% in water soaking and 4.16% in boiling water soaking, was lower than 5.00% which is the standard of KS F 3021, and the adhesive strength is good. In glulams glued with only resocinol resin adhesive, the wood layers were good as 1.26% in the water soaking delamination and 0.00% in the boiling water soaking delamination. The GFRP layers were not good as 21.85% in the water soaking delamination but were good as 1.45% in the boiling water soaking delamination.

  • In this study, specimens were produced with a column member and a wooden gusset only by inserting an wooden gusset which is a substitute for steel plate into the center of a slit-processed column member. The moment resistance performance of the specimens was compared with that of control specimens that used a steel plate. The measured maximum moments of the specimens produced with GFRP-reinforced wooden laminated gussets and pins were lower by 24% on average compared to the steel plate-inserted specimens, but they showed good toughness. The fracture shape suggests that it was fractured along the annual rings between the pin and the end of the column member. The rigid specimen that integrated a laminated wood and a wooden laminated gusset with adhesive showed 2.8 times greater initial rigidity and 40% greater maximum moment on average compared to the control specimen. The rigid specimens mainly fractured on a glulam around glue line.

  • Because Japanese cedar shows lower mechanical performance, glued-laminated timber (glulam) can be a better way to utilize Japanese cedar for structural purpose. However, low yield of higher grade lamination from log makes it difficult to design structural glulam. This study was aimed to increase the yield of higher grade lamination and provide higher efficiency of manufacturing structural lamination by ultrasonic log sorting technology. Logs were sorted by an existing log grading rule regulated by Korea Forest Research Institute (KFRI). It was found that the KFRI log grading rule contributed to finding better logs in viewpoint of the volumetric yield and it can reduce the number of rejected lumber by visual grading. However, it could not identify better logs to produce higher-grade products. To find an appropriate log-sorting-method for structural products, log diameter and ultrasonic time of flight (TOF) for the log were considered as factors to affect mechanical performance of resulting products. However, it was found that influence of log diameter on mechanical performance of resulting products was very small. The TOF showed a possibility to sort logs by mechanical performance of resulting products even though a coefficient of correlation was not strong (R = 0.6). In a case study, the log selection based on the ultrasonic TOF of the log increased the yield of the outermost tension lamination (E8 or better grade, KS F 3021) from 2.6% to 12.5% and reduced LTE5 (lower than E5 grade) lamination from 43.6% to 10.3%, compared with the existing KFRI log grading rule.

  • Japanese larch glulam was used as structural members to develop a modern engineered wood jointing system using traditional post and beam structure. For the connections comprised of traditional joining and drift-pins, structural members are processed at a pre-cut factory. As a basic study to examine and increase the whole shear performance of portal frame, pin withdrawal test and moment resistance tests were conducted on each connection. The post and beam members with specified connectors showed good bearing performance in the wood members' joining system, column-base and beam-end. Moment rigidity was a bit better in a joint with higher slenderness ratio of drift-pin, but moment resistance performances, yield moment and maximum moment, were excellent in smaller one.

  • As a way of developing wooden joint development, a glass fiber reinforced wood plate was manufactured to replace a steel plate. Also, the fracture toughness was evaluated. Through application to a cantilever-type specimen made of a column and a beam, the moment resistance performance was evaluated. For the fracture toughness specimen of the wood plate, 12 types were manufactured by varying the combination of a main member (veneer and plywood) and reinforcement (glass fiber sheet and glass fiber cloth). The results of the fracture toughness test indicated that the 5% yield load of the specimen using plywood was 18% higher than that of the specimen using veneer, and that the specimen reinforced by inserting glass fiber sheets between testing materials (Type-3-PS) had the highest average 5% yield load 4841 N. Thus, a moment resistance strength test was performed by applying Type-3-PS to a column-beam joint. The results of the test indicated that compared to the specimen using a steel plate and a drift pin (Type-A), the maximum moment ratio of the specimen using a glass fiber reinforced wood plate (Type-3-PS) and a drift pin (Type-B) was 0.79; and that a rupture occurred in the wood plate due to high stiffness of the drift pin. The maximum moment ratio of the specimen using a glass fiber reinforced wood plate (Type-3-PS) and a glass fiber reinforced wooden laminated pin (Type-C) was 0.67, which showed low performance. However, unlike Type-A, a ductile fracture occurred on Type-C, and the load gradually decreased even after the maximum moment.

  • Most connections for the glulam structural members consisted of connector and fastener. The mechanical behaviour of the connection can be occurred by the dowel bearing resistance and wood shear by the fastener. This study aims at the examination of the shear properties for the small specimen with lamination components and for the full-sized pin connection and the moment resisting property for the double shear full-sized pin connection using structural column and beam members. Small specimens including glue line shows greater density and shear strength by the lamination effect than other specimens. It is needed that estimations of double shear property and moment resistance for the pin connections should be adjusted in some degree. For the better and safe estimation of moment resistance strength for the column-beam pin connection, however, the shear strength of small specimens should be deducted by 10%.
