  • A study was made on the neutron dosimetry in a mixed gamma-neutron field with LiF thermoluminescent dosimeter. In order to estimate the neutron dose in a mixed field, $^{6}$ LiF and $^{7}$ LiF dosimeters were used for fast and thermal neutron doses. The over-all conversion factors for the effects of dosimeter positions were derived for personnel monitoring and the glow curves of the LiF dosimeters for neutron and gamma-ray doses were also analyzed.

  • Effects of magnesium and pH on corrosion of aluminum galvanically coupled to iron have studied by using potentio- dynamic and static tests for polarization curves, Mott-Schottky test for analysis of semiconductor property, and GD-AES and XPS for film analysis. Pitting potential was sensitive to magnesium as an alloying element but not to pH, while passive current was sensitive to pH but not to magnesium. It was explained with, instead of point defect model (PDM), surface charge model describing that the ingression of chloride depends on the state of surface charge and passive film at film/solution interface is affected by pH. In addition, galvanic current of aluminum electrically coupled to iron was not affected by magnesium in pH 8.4, 0.2M citrate solution but was increased by magnesium at the solution of pH 9.1. The galvanic current at pH 9.1 increased with time at the initial stage and after the exposure of about 200 minute, decreased and stabilized. The behavior of the galvanic current was related with the concentration of magnesium at the surface. It agreed with the depletion of magnesium at the oxide surface by using glow discharge atomic emission spectroscopy (GD-AES). In addition, pitting potential of pure aluminum was reduced in neutral pH solution where chloride ion maybe are competitively adsorbed on pure aluminum. It was confirmed by the exponential decrease of pitting potential with log of [$Cl^-$] around 0.025 M of [$Cl^-$] and linear decrease of the pitting potential. From the above results, unlike magnesium, alloying elements with higher electron negativity, lowering isoelectric point (ISE), are recommended to be added to improve pitting corrosion resistance of aluminum and its alloys in neutral solutions as well as their galvanic corrosion resistance in weakly basic solutions.

  • The new GD/ICP-AES quick change over system has been developed and characterized. Within less than 15 minutes, ICP-AES could be switched to GD-AES and vise a versa. As a result, both solid and liquid samples could be analyzed in a very short period of time by the ICP/GD-AES quick change over system developed in our laboratory. The influences of the experimental variables, such as flow rate of coolant gas, flow rate of auxiliary gas, flow rate of sample carrier gas, sampling depth, orifice size of sampling cone, and rf (radio frequency) power on emission intensity have been presented. The detection limits of Cd(I) 228.8 nm, Mn (II) 257.61 nm, and Fe(II) 259.95 nm were found to be 3.86, 1.49, and 5.79 ppb, respectively. And linealities of the calibration curves were measured to be unity.

  • In this study, the identification of the irradiated seafood cooking drips from Hizikia fusiformis, Enteroctopus dofleini and Thunnus thynnus was conducted. The physical detection methods used included photo-stimulated luminescence (PSL) and thermoluminescence (TL), and the chemical detection methods were hydrocarbons analysis. In the PSL study, all seafood cooking drip samples showed 260~510 photon counts; thus, the PSL method could not be used for the detection of irradiated seafood cooking drips. The TL method could be used for the detection of irradiated H. fusiformis and E. dofleini cooking drips. In both cooking drips, the shapes of the glow curves indicated a specific peak at 150$^{\circ}C$~250$^{\circ}C$, which made it possible to identify the irradiated samples. The hydrocarbons derived by gamma irradiation of T. thynnus cooking drip were not detected due to low concentration and inconsistent content of fatty acids in the untreated T. thynnus cooking drip.

  • TSEE and TSL phenomena have been measured for ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ single crystals by the use of the $2{\pi}$ proportional counter. The ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ crystals irradiated to X-ray and UV for the temperature range from room temperature to about 500k degree. Three peaks of TSEE and three peaks of TSL were observed after X-ray irradiation. Also, two peaks of TSEE and three TSL peaks were observed after UV irradiation. TSEE and TSL glow curves of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ single crystals showed very similar to the peaks position regardless of excitation sorts. Form this work, we knew that the $2{\pi}$ proportional counter is useful to not only the energy spectrum analysis device of ${\alpha}$-particle, but also the measurement instrument of TSEE and TSL.

  • Thermoluminescent dosimeter utilizes the fact that when irradiated specimen is heated up, some part of the absorbed energy is emitted from the specimen as light with longer wavelength. This research aims at analyzing the glow curves of four TLD-100 exposed to a magnetic field and those of other four TLD-100 not exposed to one by treating them with heat and irradiating them, which are commonly used as thermoluminescent dosimeter, in the same condition. As the result of the experiment, regarding the electrons captured by irradiation, some of the electrons of lower traps were combined with positive holes of valence band through the exposure to a magnetic field, and the peak size decreased by 48%. The reduction in the size of the lower traps caused the TLD-100 exposed to a magnetic field to display a low level of dose. In addition, low traps estimated activation energies are 1.6 eV and 1.5 eV.

  • Three-dimensional thermoluminescence (TL) spectra from $MgAl_2O_4$ irradiated with UV light were measured over 300${\~}$600 K and 300${\~}$800 nm. The peak positions of TL glow curves were shifted to lower temperature with increasing the exposure time of UV light. The 476 K TL glow curve is due to the second kinetics and its activation energy and escape frequency factor are calculated to be 0.85 eV and $1.92{\times}10^6 sec^{-1}$, respectively The TL spectra were split into 530 nm and 700 nm emission bands which were associated with $V^{2+}$ and $Cr^{2+}$, respectively. The linearity range of 700 nm omission band is smaller than that of 530 nm emission band, but the saturation time of 700 nm emission band is longer than that of 530 nm omission band.

  • Minerals separated from irradiated dried red pepper (whole) at 2.5 kGy or higher showed typical thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves ($TL_1$) at around $150^{\circ}C$, which increased with irradiation dose. The TL ratio ($TL_1/TL_2$) through re-irradiation step at 1 kGy enhanced reliability of TL identification results. DNA comet assay indicated that the intact cell was observed in non-irradiated pepper (seed), while some long tails were found in irradiated ones, showing relationship between irradiation dose and tail length. Log DEPT/APC values increased in proportion to irradiation doses in powdered and whole peppers. Based on overall results, irradiated dried red peppers could be screened using DNA comet assay or log DEFT/APC, and moreover the identification results were verified by TL analysis.

  • The detection characteristics of irradiated spices were investigated depending on radiation sources and doses by photostimulated luminescence (PSL) and Thermoluminescence (TL). 6 kinds of spices (turmeric, onion powder, red pepper, basil, parsley, black pepper) were irradiated at 0 to 10 kGy under ambient conditions by both a $^{60}Co$ gamma irradiator and an electron beam (EB) accelerator, respectively. The PSL analysis showed negative results for non-irradiated spices, while irradiated spices gave intermediate and positive value, which presented the limited potential of PSL technique. In TL measurement, TL glow curves on non-irradiated samples appeared at about $300^{\circ}C$ with low intensity. All irradiated samples were easily distinguishable through radiation-specific strong TL glow curves with maximum peak in range of $150{\sim}200^{\circ}C$. TL ratio ($TL_1/TL_2$) obtained by a re-irradiation step could verify the detection result of $TL_1$ glow curves, showing ratios lower than 0.1 in the non-irradiated sample and higher than 0.1 in irradiated ones. Therefore, in PSL measurement, the identification of irradiated spices showed more clear results in electron beam irradiated samples. TL analysis showed obvious difference between non-irradiated and irradiated samples in gamma ray and electron beam irradiated samples.

  • Ten commercially available red pepper powders were investigated using photostimulated-luminescence (PSL), thermoluminescence (TL) and electron spin resonance (ESR) analyses to confirm their irradiation status. The application of PSL, TL, and ESR analyses was also confirmed by in-house irradiation. In PSL-based screening, all samples gave negative photon counts (<700 PCs). The PSL calibration dose (1 kGy) showed a low sensitivity of 4 samples, while the others provided reliable screening results. TL glow curves demonstrated maximum peaks after $250^{\circ}C$ for the 6 samples; however 4 samples gave complex TL glow curves with maximum peaks in the range of $185-260^{\circ}C$ (radiation-specific), which could be the effect of an irradiated component in low concentration as the TL ratios of all samples were <0.1. Radiation-specific ESR features were absent in the all commercial samples. Variable irradiation detection properties were found; where the TL analysis showed the possible presence of an irradiated component in 4 samples requiring further monitoring and investigation.
