A climatic feature, growth condition and incidence phase of disease and pest in Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) were surveyed, both the conventional cultivation and culture in the forest located in Jinan. The results were as follows. The forest field was lower $1^{\circ}C$ in the air temperature, lower $1.9^{\circ}C$ in the soil temperature and 11.8% lower in the soil temperature compared with the conventional field. The wind velocity of the forest field was three times slower, but the dew condensation time was 3.3 hours longer than the conventional field. Particularly, the amounts of solar radiation in the forest was remarkably lower, while the rainfall was little lower with no significance. The incidence of disease and pest in the forest field was severe compared with that of the conventional field. Among them, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Cylindrocarpon destructans, and Alternaria panax was severe in the forest field while, Botrytis cinerea was severe in the conventional field. The growth condition of forest field in Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer was 50% worse in general and the root weight was 87.2% less than the 3-year-old ginseng in the conventional field.

This study was conducted to find out the changes in the growth and yield of ginseng and the changes in the soil of direct-seeded ginseng fields after applying different compaction strengths. As a result of surface soil compactions, the topsoil hardness increases as the strength of treatment increases in the first year but topsoil hardness increased only by applying 30 kg weight of compaction in the second year. The germination rate was significantly higher (79.4% and 79.1% at 25 kg and 30 kg, respectively) in 1st year after the application of soil surface compactions. The longest plant was 35.7 cm in 4- years old ginseng in the control and the height was 26.9 cm and 26.5 cm in the soil surface compactions of 25 kg and 30 kg, respectively. In addition, the higher weight of ginseng roots of 31.3 g and 30.3 g were observed after applying 25 kg and 30 kg compaction treatment, and the lowest root weight of 25.6 g was in the control. Therefore, it is shown that after sowing, applying the weight of 25 kg to 30 kg for soil surface compaction is appropriate for better yield in direct seeded cultivation of ginseng at paddy fields.
Researches on mineral nutrition, physiology and phyrsiological diseases, . cultivaction methods. brceding. pest control quality management and extension during 1976-1995 in Korea were reviewed Review in brceding and pest control was restricted to the researches directely related to cultivaction. Mineral nulrient up take. partion and varicos factors such as top dreasing. Light intersity etc. and interrelationship between minerals were investigated. Top dressing was not effective due to low minera1 requorement Physiological characteristics on tempelature light and water were well elucidated and applied to assess traditional cultivation method and its inovation. Photosyrnthetic pigments. light harvest proteins and activity of related enzymes were studied. In nitrogen metabolism arginine, praline, ammonium, threonine appeared to have important role in re growth of shoot Saponin metabolism was studied in relation to growth and new ginsenosides were found but physiological role of saponin was not clearly elucidated yet Endogenous growth regulators were reported and various erogenous growth regulators were studied for growth stimulation. short stem and seed pruning etc. Various physiological diseases were investigated for cause and control measures were established. Water culture was little studied Forest culture was studied but not retched the recommendable stage Drip irrigation straw mulching. seasonal shading and soil preparation method including soil fertility adjustment were established for practical application. Shading materials completely changed to polyethylene net and materials of polymers The research on ginseng cultivation in paddy field opened the way to establish the permanent ginseng cultivation plantation Ginseng harvester and seeder were developed in the late 1950s. Transplanted and many other machines were developed in the early 1990s. In ginseng breeding only pure line selection was of practical significance several verities were at the stage of seed propagation at ginseng plantations. Mutation breeding (${\gamma}$-ray. X-ray chemicals) was not successful. The research on plantlet formation through tissue culture was a little progressed but still far behind to vegetative propagation. Disease control research was concentrated in the isolation and identification of pathogans. their ecological charactelistics and biological control and soil humigation. Potato root rot nematodes was found and control method was established. Insect and small animal control research was greatly progresses in identification, ecological investigation, and ecological and physical control. Weed control was less important due to the development of mulching method of ridge and ditch. Quality factors of raw ginseng in relation to red ginseng process were extensively studied. Traditional quality measures were elucidated in accordance with modern analytical chemistry resulting in the importance of peptides in the centrat part rather than ginsenosides For large root production growth promoting rootzone micrcorganisms (PGPRM) were isolated and active compounds were identified. Field test on PGPRM was on going. Varictus methods formality improvement through cultivation were developed. Management research of ginseng production was rare Extension was active throuch official and private organizations and through workshop for the extension specialists, and direct lectures to grower's. Extension services made the researcher to understand the existing problems at grower's fields. Research environment for ginseng production was in prime time only for three years when Korea Ginseng Research Institute was established then gradually aggravated.
This study was carried out to improve density of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) propagule and physiochemical properties of soil by planting crops at the preplanning field for ginseng cultivation. Winter crops, such as barley and rye and summer crops, such as sudangrass and soybean were cultivated in combination to improve AMF propagation and soil aggregation at the fields. Yield of harvested crops by plating with winter or/and summer crops was $3,045kg\;10a^{-1}$ of the only rye cultivation, $2,757kg\;10a^{-1}$ of sudangrass cultivation in combination with rye growing (rye/sudangrass) and $1,628kg\;10a^{-1}$ of soybean cultivation in combination with barley growing (barley/soybean), respectively. Soil aggregation rate was improved by cultivation with barley (45.7%) and with rye/sudangrass (45.1%), respectively. The density of AMF spores in soil was increased slowly by cultivating with winter crops. In summer crops cultivation system, density of AMF spores at sudangrass cultivated field was $64.0spores\;g^{-1}$ dried soil and it was higher than that at soybean cultivated field. External hyphae length (EHL) was $1.5{\sim}2.0m\;g^{-1}$ air-dried soil at winter crops cultivated field. However, in summer crops cultivation systems, EHL was $2.6{\sim}2.9m\;g^{-1}$ airdried soil at sudangrass cultivated field and was $1.7{\sim}2.2m\;g^{-1}$ air-dried soil at soybean cultivated filed, showing these were higher than those in non-cultivated field (control). Glomalin content of soil cultivated with crops was higher than that of control soil. Especially, the highest glomalin content was shown to $1.7m\;g^{-1}$ air-dried soil in the barley/soybean cultivation systems. These results suggested that the most effective soil management to improve AMF propagule density and soil physical properties by planting crops system was cultivating sudangrass followed by barley at the preplanning fields for ginseng cultivation.
Ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) has been cultivated on raised beds with shading condition for 4 to 6 years because of its physiological characteristics. This shading condition maintains relatively stable soil environments protecting from rainfall and direct sunlight. Therefore, pesticides in ginseng growing soil are exposed to far different environment from the general cropping field. To study the behavior of pesticides under this condition, the effect of covering on the persistency of Procymidone in ginseng cultivating soil was investigated by using several shade materials. The most important factor affecting Procymidone persistency in soil under covering was water leakage rates of shade materials.
Root yield and quality of ginseng cultured in paddy soil was low relatively compared with that of upland soil because of moisture injury in root during rainy season. Drainage class in soils generally divided into 6 classes, and it is possible to cultivate ginseng practically in imperfectly drainage class (IDC). This study carried out to select the varieties that is suitable for paddy soil, which is easy to be generated rusty-colored root and physiological-discolored leaf. Experiment plot arranged with the condition of soil humidity contents such as poorly drainage class (PDC) and imperfectly drainage class (IDC), and upland soil. Growth characteristics and root yield were investigated in four-year-old ginseng of varieties, Cheonpoong (CP), Yeonpoong (YP), Hwangsookjong (HS), and Jakyeongjong (JK). CP among four varieties showed the highest yield in IDC and CP was the lowest ratio in leaf discoloration and rusty-colored root. HS was followed by CP in the order of root yield, but it had the weakness that the ratio of rusty-colored root was high respectively.
As stand-missing rate (SMR) of ginseng plants in fields are directly related to the ginseng root rot, the forecasting model for the root rot progress in ginseng fields was developed, using the estimated SMRs by disease incidence (DI) of ginseng seedling in the soil-indexing bioassay and the estimate of DI derived from soil environmental factors or rhizoplane microflora. For fitness analysis of the forecasting model, simple correlation and linear regression between SMRs at different planting ages in fields and their estimates by 3 factors of the model were evaluated. The SMR estimated from the factor of DI in the bioassay had much higher fitness to the SMR observed in fields than that from the factors of soil environments and rhizoplane microflora. The estimated SMRs in young and aged ginseng fields by DI in the bioassay were significantly correlated with the observed SMRs in 3- and 5-year-old ginseng fields, respectively (p=0.01). this implicates that indexing preplanting field soils with the forecasting model using DI in the bioassay can provide an information to determine the suitability of the fields for ginseng cultivation, and that indexing cultivating field soils can be helpful to determine the time of harvesting to reduce further yield loss by root rot in continuous cultivation in the next year.
Biodiversity of yeasts was investigated in the ginseng cultivation field. Among 34 isolates tested in this study, 26 isolates belonged to the hymenomycetous yeast group. These 26 strains were classified into 12 species including four new-species candidates that did not have clear affiliation to any established species. Seven isolates among the remaining strains were classified into three ascomycetous yeast species, and one isolate was identified as a urediniomycetous yeast species.
To get the basic information about ginseng seedling production, yield of ginseng seedling and soil physico-chemical components of Ban-Yang-Jik (semimodified soil) nursery in 29 farmer's field were investigated. The number of available seedling per Kan (Kan means $180{\times}90cm$ area) is $362{\pm}226$. Root weight per seedling was negatively correlated with ammount of fine and extremely fine sand. Positive correlations were shown between pH and OM, K, Ca and Mg, and also between EC and Ca, Mg and ammonium and nitrate nitrogen in soil of nursery. There were significant linear relations between root weight and OM, K, Ca and Mg in soil of nursery. On the other hand, quadratic relation was held between the root weight and $P_2O_5$, but the root weight has no correlation with nitrogen. The nitrogen contents of soil might not influence on the growth of ginseng seedling as greatly as those of $P_2O_5$, K and Ca. The contents of $P_2O_5$, K and Ca in root were increased with increase of the contents of $P_2O_5$, K and Ca in soil of nusery, respectively. It showed the linear correlation between the root weight and $P_2O_5$ and Ca, otherwise quadratic correlation between the root weight and K in root.
This research was conducted to investigate the influence of organic bed soil substrates on growth and yield of organically grown ginseng transplantation in a shaded plastic houses. The pH and EC of the substrates used for this study were 5.93-6.78 and 0.03-0.15 dS/m, respectively. The concentrations of NH4-N and $NO_3$-N were 14.01-68.63 mg/L, 5.60-58.83 mg/L respectively. and the average quantum in the shaded plastic houses was 11-15% of natural light. The maximum temperature in the shaded plastic houses is higher ($3-7^{\circ}C$) than that of outside open field from the last part of April to early in August. Emergence date of ginseng was on March 21 in the mongolian type shaded plastic house, and was on March 29 in normal type shaded plastic house. Both roots and shoot growth of ginseng were excellent in the bed soils with PPV-2, compared with other compounds used. We concluded that the PPV-2 could be promising a good bed soil substrate for organic ginseng cultivation in shaded plastic house.
