One of the main factors restricting production of triploid seedless watermelon is poor germination due to weak embryos, thick seed coats, and larger air spaces. This study was carried out to investigate the priming effects of different concentrations of chemicals, including hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$), fusicoccin, and gibberellic acid (GA) on germination and seedling uniformity of triploid watermelon (Citrullus lanatus). Three commercial triploid cultivars, Seedless Plus, Sinus, and Sizero, were pretreated with water and different levels of $H_2O_2$ (2 and 4%), fusicoccin (FC: 1, 5, and $10{\mu}M$), and GA (1, 5, and $10{\mu}M$). The present findings helped to find optimal priming conditions for improving germination of triploid watermelon. Treatment with $5{\mu}M$ GA and hydropriming helped to break seed dormancy, enhancing the final germination percentages in all triploid cultivars and increasing the germination index in Sizero. These seed-priming treatments could be used on large scale for industrial applications. Moreover, hydropriming provides a simple, effective, and costless method to improve seed germination and seedling vigor of Sinus and Sizero varieties.
This experiment was conducted to evaluate the germination rate according to temperature, pelleting materials, pelleted size, seed storage periods under light and dark conditions in Rehmannia glutinosa. The highest germination rate was obtained from $25^{\circ}C$ in both light and dark condition. Two-year old seeds showed higher germination rate compared to one-year old seed. Talc material showed the highest germination rate among the pelleting materials by 82.5%. Among the different pelleting sizes, the highest germination rate was shown in 2.0 mm, and especially Talc pelleting showed 100% germination rate on 17days after seeding. In case of combination of pelleting materials, both of talc + vermiculite, zeolite + vermiculite showed lower germination rate than the control and 0.7 mm pelleted seed showed the highest germination rate.
This experiment was conducted to find out the factors governing the viviparous germination of In. $\times$ Ja. type rice varieties. Six varieties, i.e., Milyang 21, Raekyeong, Milyang 30, Yeongnamjosaeng, Nopoong and Mansuk, were used for this experiment. The viviparous germination easily occurred between 40 to 45 days after heading, and was easier in yellow-ripe stage or full-ripe stage than dough-ripe stage. The use of exceeding fertilization induced more viviparous germination than ordinary one. The early varieties such as Yeongnam-josaeng and Milyang 21, easily occurred the viviparous germination. The local conditions of viviparous germination were usually poorly drained soils and narrow alluvial valleys where were high humidity prevailed.
This study was conducted to know the effect of vinyl mulching from the sowing to germination on the seedbed for germination and production of seedling. Embryo growth was restrained with decreasing the water content in seed and stopped below 10% water content. Germination was possible over 55% water content but radicle growth was stopped at 55% water content. Ratioes of embryo / emdosperm length were about 50% at seeding time, and about 80% at just before freeing season, and the ratio was increased from the thawing season again. Vinyl mulching increased the soil water content and soil temperature. Germination rate and number of available seedling in vinyl mulching were increased 10% and 12%, respectively.

Research was initiated to investigate germination characteristics of creeping bentgrass (CB, Agrostis palustris Huds.). Seven varieties of CB were evaluated with different experiments. An alternative environment condition requiring for a CB germination test by International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) was applied in the Experiment I, consisting of 8-hr light at $25^{\circ}C$ and 16-hr dark at $15^{\circ}C$(ISTA conditions). Experiment II was conducted under a room temperature condition of 5 to $25^{\circ}C$(natural conditions). In each experiment, data such as seed germinating vigor, early germination characteristics, germination speed and germination peak time were measured. Significant differences were observed in seed germinating vigor, early germination characteristics, germination speed and germination peak time. Seed germinating vigor was variable with different environments and varieties. It was 61.50 to 98.25% under ISTA conditions and 55.00 to 98.50% under natural conditions. There were considerable variations in early germination characteristics among CB varieties according to different conditions. Early germination characteristics indicated that all varieties were 1 to 4 days faster in germination under ISTA conditions, when compared with natural conditions. The germination speed, measured as days to seed germination of 70% and 90%, was much faster with Penn A-1, Penn A-4 and Penncross under ISTA conditions. But it was even faster with L-93 and Penncross when grown under natural conditions. Differences were also observed in germination peak time with varieties and growing conditions. It was 0.57 to 2.86 days under ISTA conditions and 0.74 to 1.74 days under natural conditions. Regardless of the environment conditions, the shortest variety was L-93 and the longest one T-1. Considering germinating vigor, early germination characteristics, germination speed and germination peak time, Penn A-1, Penn A-4 and Penncross were regarded as excellent varieties under ISTA conditions in terms of early establishment characteristics, while L-93, Penn A-1 and Penncross under natural conditions. These results suggest that an intensive germination test be needed prior to planting, for the early germinating vigor, germination speed and germination peak time. Also, a proper variety selection and comprehensive site analysis for the growing environmental conditions should be done before golf course construction.
Diospyros mespiliformis is a highly valued and threatened tree species within the Sahelo-Sudanian zone of Africa, but its seed germination requirements under cultivation are not well researched. In a first experiment which aimed at determining germination response of seeds to dehydration, fresh seeds were dried at room temperature for 26 days during which their moisture content, their germinability, and their viability were monitored at two-day intervals. In the second experiment, 14 pre-germination treatments were tested for their effect on the germination of dried seeds. Results showed that fresh seeds had 52.7% moisture and achieved 97.7% germination. As seeds were dried, percentage germination gradually decreased with decreasing moisture content and reached 0% when moisture content had dropped to 18%. Meanwhile, seed viability remained at 100% over drying duration. Seeds that were not germinated after air dry also recorded 100% viability. The most effective treatment for inducing germination of dried seeds was scarification using 98% sulfuric acid for 30 min which resulted in 96.6% germination. This study reports for the first time in D. mespiliformis seeds a desiccation-induced dormancy which can be efficiently alleviated by acid scarification. This study provides useful information that will contribute to efficient management of D. mespiliformis seed resources for propagation.

Fungicide applications are required to prevent the strawberry from Botrytis fruit rot and powdery mildew that infect open strawberry flowers, however, their effects of fungicides on pollen germination of strawberry have been rarely documented, particularly those from recently developed active fungicidal ingredients. In this study we have evaluated the effects of 24 commercial fungicidal formulations and 6 organic materials on pollen germination in 3 strawberry cultivars using in vitro assays. Pollens from strawberry had higher germination rates on agar with sucrose of 18% and $25^{\circ}C$ than other tested conditions. Pollen germination rates of cvs. Seolhyang, Maehyang, and Kumhyang at 18% sucrose and $25^{\circ}C$ were 15.3, 18.4 and 30.7%, respectively. Pyraclostrobin, azoxystrobin, kresoxim-methyl, dichlofluanid, iminoctadine tris, and sulfur showed the strongest inhibitory efficacy with the germination rates of more than 93.8% compared to the no-fungicide control. Germination was not significantly affected by simeconazole and procymidone. This in vitro germination study may provide information useful for selecting fungicides in flowering stage to strawberry farmers.
This study examined the relationship between dinoflagellate cysts and vegetative cells, to a certain extent, by conducting a germination experiment on dinoflagellate cysts collected from a sediment trap and surface sediment. The germination experiment showed that 56.8%, 25 of the 44 species of dinoflagellate cysts seen in the sediment trap, germinated, which confirmed the relationship between cysts and vegetative cells. The germination experiment also found that Votadinium carvum showed different forms of vegetative cells in all three forms of cysts, which required an accurate identification of the species through a genetic analysis. Furthermore, the species known to be the cyst of Cochlodinium polykrikoides was determined to be Cochlodinium sp., and the cysts of C. polykrikoides did not appear.
To obtain the information on the germination and initial growth of the sesame, the seed of 6 sesame cultivars obtained from upper and lower position of plants were seeded and the results on the germination and initial growth were summarized as follows; 1. When the seeding time was delayed, the days to flower of all sesame cultivars were significantly decreased. And the shortening rate of days to flower by delaying seeding time showed significant differences among the sesame cultivars. 2. At all cultivars excluding IS 103, the germination percentage of the seeds obtained from lower position of sesame plant was significantly higher than those from upper position. 3. Germination percentage of IS 103 seeds from lower position of sesame plant was 20.0% at petri dish experiment and 75.0% at pot experiment and those from upper position of the stem was 17.0% at petri dish experiment and 72.5% at pot experiment, respectively. 4. The germination speed of all cultivars showed a same tendency as germination percentage, but the germination speed of cultivars at pot experiment was higher than those at petri dish experiment. 5. The sesame seedlings from lower position seed were increased in stem length, root length, leaf length and fresh weight than those from upper position seed. The germination percentage and the initial growth showed significant differences by the seed weight in same cultivar, however did not show any varietal differences.

Seed coating and pelleting techniques have been used in many crops to improve the germination vigor of tiny and light seeds. Cultivated Chinese-foxglove (Rehmannia glutlnosa) has been infected by various types of virus derived from vagetative propagation of rootstock. Seed characteristics and alginate-coated seed germination rate have been investigated to get basic information for healthy seedling production through seed propagation. Chinese-foxglove showed different numbers of seeds per pod from 61 in Seocheon local to 207 in Jiwhang 1 and 1,000grain weight also varied from 70mg of Seocheon local to 130mg of Jiwhang 1. Seeds of Chinese-foxglove has dormancy because that seed collected last year more stimulated than that of this year at germination test. Optimum alginate concentration for pellected seeds germination was 2%.
