  • Geothermal water contains toxic quantities of sulfur, potassium, sodium, boron, and other toxic elements. These toxic elements can substantially restrict germination and seedling growth in rice plant. Germination percentage, average days required for germination and germination velocity were drastically affected by geothermal water. Binato cultivar has higher germination rate compared to IR58 and Unbong 7. Plant height, root length, leaf number and total dry weight decreased with increased geothermal water concentration. Binato and IR58 showed higher total dry weight than Unbong 7 at 25 percent geothermal water at 15 days after treatment (DAT). Binato and IR58 were relatively more tolerant than Unbong 7 in terms of percentage of leaf damage at 25, 50 and 75% concentration of geothermal water at 10 DAT. The development of large and small vascular bundles decreased with increasing concentration of geothermal water from control to 50% in three rice cultivars.

  • We estimated geothermal power generation potential in Korea through Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) technology following the recently proposed protocol which was endorsed by international organizations. Input thermal and physical data for estimation are density, specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements from 1,516 outcrop samples, 180 heat production, 352 heat flow, and 52 mean surface temperature data. Inland area was digitized into 34,742 grids of $1'{\times}1'$ size and temperature distribution and available heat were calculated for 1 km depth interval from 3 km down to 10 km. Thus estimated theoretical potential reached 6,975 GW which is 92 times total generation capacity of Korea in 2010. Technical potential down to 6.5 km and considering land accessibility, thermal recovery ratio of 0.14 and temperature drawdown factor of $10^{\circ}C$ was 19.6 GW. If we disregard temperature drawdown factor, which can be considered in estimating economic potential, the technical potential increases up to 56 GW.

  • This paper provides an economic analysis of a new geothermal heat pump system that reuses condenser waste heat from a Ground Source Heat Pump ($GSHP_{ch}$) to provide energy for a hot water Ground Source heat pump ($GSHP_{hw}$). After conducting feasibility tests using GLD and TRNSYS simulations, the proposed system was effectively installed and thoroughly tested. We observe that 1) the Coefficient of Performance (COP) of the $GSHP_{hw}$ and the $GSHP_{ch}$ during cooling mode improves by up to 62% and 7%, respectively; 2) the number of bore holes can be reduced by two; and 3) the hot water supply temperature of the $GSHP_{hw}$ increases by up to $60^{\circ}C$. We further conclude that 1) the reduction of two bore holes can save approximately ten million Won from the initial cost investment; and 2) the increased COP of the $GSHP_{hw}$ can save approximately one million Won in annual electricity costs.

  • The use of energy pile foundation has been increased for economic utilization of geothermal energy. This paper describes an experimental and numerical study on thermal response tests (TRTs) using W and 3U-shaped ground heat exchangers (GHEs) in precast-high strength concrete (PHC) energy piles. Ground thermal conductivity and borehole thermal resistance were measured and compared with those numerical analysis. W-shpaed GHE showed higher heat transfer behavior than 3U-shaped one because of different conditions such as pile size and volume of grout. That is, ground thermal conductivity using W-shaped GHE was higher than that of 3U shaped GHE, and borehole thermal resistance vice versa. The relative error of borehole resistance values between numerical and analytical solution was less than 5%.

  • Economic feasibility was conducted regarding the regulation that dictates obligatory installation of renewable energy facilities in small proportion. A concern is how to allocate the capacities of candidate facilities (solar collectors, PV cells and geothermal heat pumps) with minimum cost, and meet the obligatory energy supply proportion. A design rule has been developed, with which a designer can tune his or her design strategy between installation cost and LCC. This was derived mainly from documents regarding the KEMCO installation guide. It was concluded that PV was the cheapest, with respect to installation cost, but a geothermal heat pump was the most recommended, when LCC was also taken into account. The proposed design result was also confirmed, by simulation results obtained from Energy Plus.

  • A field campaign of magnetotelluric (MT) and audio-frequency MT (AMT) survey was done at 36 measurement points as a complementary for the previous 44 MT measurements completed during the period of 2005-2006. The purpose of additional MT survey is to investigate the possible fracture system in Seokmo Island, which is conceived to be crucial in accumulation and migration of geothermal hot spring in this area. We have done 2D and 3D inversions of overall MT and AMT data distributed on a grid to interpret subsurface of extended area. The inversion results reveal that at least two major faults are imaged in the inversion results, one of which is in NNE-SWW with steep dip, and another is in E-W direction.

  • The objective of this study is to find the optimal control algorithm of a hybrid Plant, which is combined by renewable energy plant of the GSHP(Geothermal Source Heat Pump) and the normal plant (Chiller, boiler). The work presented in this study was carried out in the EnergyPlus(Version 2.0). The EnergyPlus was modified in order to simulate the hybrid plant. The plant system was controlled by the load-range-based operation in which schemes select a user specified set of equipment for each user specified range of a particular simulation condition. In the use of the load-range-based operation, four kind of control cases were defined and simulated in order to obtain the optimal control algorithm of the hybrid plant. The result showed that the Case 2 was the optimal control algorithm which used the GSHP as a base operating plant and the normal plant as an assistant operating plant. Even though the normal plant was operated in full load and the renewable energy plant of the GSHP was operated in partial load, the annual energy consumption of the normal plant was larger than that of the GSHP plant.

  • This paper describes the experimental characteristics on cooling and heating performance of the coil deposition type heat pump using geothermal energy to optimize the design for the operating parameters of this system. The operating parameters considered in this study include subcooling degree, evaporation and condensation temperature in the coil deposition type heat pump using geothermal energy. The main results are summarized as follows : As the evaporation temperature and subcooling degree of the coil deposition type heat pump using geothermal energy increases, and the condensation temperature decreases, the COP of this system increases. The subcooling degree, evaporation and condensation temperature of the coil deposition type heat pump have an effect on cooling and heating COP of this heat pump. Therefore, it is a necessary to determine the optimum operation conditions for the highest COP of this heat pump presented in this study.

  • When the polymer was used for the guard raw materials of electronic device, the content of U, Th and their daughter nuclides were known as a factor of soft error. Because emitted alpha ray could be caused of mis-operation. And ionic impurities such as Cl, Fe, Na could shorten the device life-time. For the analysis of trace impurities in the polymer, neutron activation analysis(NAA) and ICP/AES have been studied. To improve the accuracy and sensitivity of the trace and ultratrace metallic impurities in the epoxy and phenol polymer, sample pretreatment method and optimum analytical condition of NAA were developed. Using the above method, U, Th and other 23 trace impurity elements were analyzed.

  • Because of the water scarcity caused by the increase of salinity in the underground water, seawater desalination stands out as one of the most promising solution. As there are so much energy costs in operating desalination plants, new hybrid process which is more effective should be researched. A geothermal VMD (vacuum membrane distillation) hybrid process is a competitive alternative for seawater desalination. Because geothermal energy has significant characteristics of high capacity factor to operate the power plant at full capacity for 24 hour per day, it can be a priority heat source of VMD superior to any other renewable energies such as solar and wind power. In this study, we design a geothermal VMD hybrid process, analyze it economically and finally compare the result with a case of conventional VMD process. Geothermal VMD hybrid process generates $23,822,409 of NPV (net present value) more than the conventional VMD process in case of 5% discount rate. The break-even point between these processes is 5.36 year. Sensitivity analysis indicates that steam cost is the most decisive influence variable to the economic outcome.
