  • In this study we carried out to evaluate the salinity concentration and volumetric water content of unsaturated soil column using frequency domain Reflectometry with vector network analyzer (FDR-V) measurement system. All of experiments were considered to the effect of temperature which ranges from l0$^{\circ}C$ to 50$^{\circ}C$ increasing the interval of l0$^{\circ}C$ controlled by the constant temperature container. From the results the responses of complex dielectric constant which consist of the real part and imaginary parts have the effect of volumetric water content and concentration of salinity at 1GHz. Use of derived equations (1) and (2) can be calculated the physical parameters such as volumetric water content and salinity concentration of unsaturated media by the responses of complex dielectric constant.

  • The aim of this paper is to develop design-oriented models for the prediction of the ultimate strength and ultimate axial strain for concrete confined with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) wraps. Twenty of most used and recent design-oriented models developed to predict the strength and strain of GFRP-confined concrete in circular sections are selected and evaluated basing on a database of 163 test results of concrete cylinders confined with GFRP wraps subjected to uniaxial compression. The evaluation of these models is performed using three statistical indices namely the coefficient of the determination (R2), the root mean square error (RMSE), and the average absolute error (AAE). Based on this study, new strength and strain models for GFRP-wrapped concrete are developed using regression analysis. The obtained results show that the proposed models exhibit better performance and provide accurate predictions over the existing models.

  • Creep of soils has a significant impact on mechanical properties. The one-dimensional consolidation creep test, thermal analysis test, scanning electron microscope (SEM) test, and mercury compression test were performed on Guilin red clay to study the changes in bound water and microstructure during the creep process of Guilin red clay. According to the results of the tests, only free and weakly bound water is discharged during the creep of Guilin red clay. When the consolidation pressure p is in the 12.5-400.0 kPa range, it is primarily the discharge of free water; when the consolidation pressure p is in the 800.0-1600.0 kPa range, the weakly bound water is converted to free water and discharged. After consolidation creep, the microstructure of soil changes from granular overhead contact structure to flat sheet-like stacking structure, with a decrease in the number of large and medium pores, an increase in the number of small and micro pores, and a decrease in the fractal dimension of pores. The creep process of red clay is the discharge of weakly bound water as well as the compression of large pores into small pores and the transition of soil particles from loose to dense.

  • The present study aims to investigate the free vibration of bi-directional functionally graded (BDFG) beams using a refined shear deformation (RSD) theory. Power law variation of material composition was considered along thickness and longitudinal directions. The beams are considered simply supported. The methodology adopted is the Hamilton principle and the governing equation was solved using Navier's method for simply supported boundary conditions. A metal-ceramic combination of materials was used to provide gradation as per power law variation. The equivalent elasticity modulus and density of BDFG were computed using the rule of mixture. The results of the study were related to published works and found to be a good match. The effect of grading parameters in the thickness and longitudinal direction was studied to investigate its impact on the natural frequency.

  • The use of external carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) wraps is one of the most effective techniques existing for the confinement of the circular concrete columns. Currently, several researches have been made to develop models for predicting the behavior of this type of confinement. The disadvantage of the most models, is to not take into account the contribution of the transverse steel reinforcements (TSR) effect, However, very limited models have been recently developed that considers this combined effect and gives less accurate results. This paper presents the development of a new model for the axial behavior of circular concrete columns confined by combining external CFRP warps-and-internal TSR (hoops or spirals) based on the existing experimental data. The comparison between the proposed model and the experimental results showed good agreement comparing to the several existing models. Moreover, the expressions of estimating the ultimate strength and the corresponding strain are simple and precise, which make it easy to use in the design applications.

  • In evaluating the stability of underground structures and designing prevention methods against the lateral flow, it is necessary to predict the amount and the distribution of the lateral earth pressure acting on these retaining structures. However, because the lateral deformation of real ground is a very complex phenomenon influenced by interaction between volumetric deformation bringing an increase of stability of ground and shear deformation causing failure of ground, any appropriate methods for estimating the lateral earth pressure in consideration of the geotechnical properties of ground and the construction conditions in embankment have not been developed as yet. Therefore, a prediction method, which considers effects of a construction speed of embankment, using the Boussinesq's solution based on the elasticity theory without using complex numerical analyses such as finite element analyses is proposed in this research.

  • This work presents a static and free vibration analysis of functionally graded metal-ceramic (FG) beams with considering porosities that may possibly occur inside the functionally graded materials (FGMs) during their fabrication. A new displacement field containing integrals is proposed which involves only three variables. Based on the suggested theory, the equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle. This theory involves only three unknown functions and accounts for parabolic distribution of transverse shear stress. In addition, the transverse shear stresses are vanished at the top and bottom surfaces of the beam. The Navier solution technique is adopted to derive analytical solutions for simply supported beams. The accuracy and effectiveness of proposed model are verified by comparison with previous research. A detailed numerical study is carried out to examine the influence of the deflections, stresses and natural frequencies on the bending and free vibration responses of functionally graded beams.

  • From the structural safety point of view, ductility is an important parameter, a relatively high level of curvature ductility would provide to the structure an increased chance of survival against accidental impact and seismic attack. The ductility of reinforced concrete beams is very important, because it is the property that allows structures to dissipate energy in seismic zone. This paper presents a revision of an earlier formula for predicting the curvature ductility factor of unconfined HSC beams to make it simpler in the use. The new formula is compared with the earlier formula and other numerical and experimental results. The new formula regroups all parameters can affecting the curvature ductility of unconfined HSC beams and it has the same domain of application as the earlier formula.

  • A new constitutive model for the representation of the seismic behaviour of steel bars including hardening phenomena is presented. The model takes into account relative slip between bars and concrete, necessary for the estimation of the structural behaviour of r.c. elements and of the level of strain induced by earthquakes on bars. The present work provides the analytical formulation of the post-yielding behaviour of reinforcements, resulting in a continuous axial stress-slip relationship to be implemented in engineering software. The efficacy of the model is proved through the application to a cantilever column, for whose bars the constitutive law is derived.
