In order to adopt feature-based parametric modeling, CAD/CAM applications must have a geometric constraint solver that can handle a large set of geometric configurations efficiently and robustly. In this paper, we describe a graph constructive approach to solving geometric constraint problems. Usually, a graph constructive approach is efficient, however it has its limitation in scope; it cannot handle ruler-and-compass non-constructible configurations and under-constrained problems. To overcome these limitations. we propose an algorithm that isolates ruler-and-compass non-constructible configurations from ruler-and-compass constructible configurations and applies numerical calculation methods to solve them separately. This separation can maximize the efficiency and robustness of a geometric constraint solver. Moreover, the solver can handle under-constrained problems by classifying under-constrained subgraphs to simplified cases by applying classification rules. Then, it decides the calculating sequence of geometric entities in each classified case and calculates geometric entities by adding appropriate assumptions or constraints. By extending the clustering types and defining several rules, the proposed approach can overcome limitations of previous graph constructive approaches which makes it possible to develop an efficient and robust geometric constraint solver.
The east-asian mathematics is highly evaluated in mathematics education. In this paper, we search the geometric problems of east-asian mathematics in high school textbooks and various examinations and investigate how to use such problems. We also confirm that the geometric problems of east-asian mathematics can be widely used as real life materials for introducing new mathematical topics, real life applications for mathematical topics, and valuable source for mathematical discourse.
By analysing the examination papers for geometry, we classified the errors occured in the proofs for geometric problems into 5 main types - logical invalidity, lack of inferential ability or knowledge, ambiguity on communication, incorrect description, and misunderstanding the question - and each types were classified into 2 or 5 subtypes. Based on the types of errors, answers of each problem was analysed in detail. The errors were classified, causes were described, and teaching plans to prevent the error were suggested case by case. To improve the students' ability to express the proof of geometric problems, followings are needed on school education. First, proof learning should be customized for each types of errors in school mathematics. Second, logical thinking process must be emphasized in the class of mathematics. Third, to prevent and correct the errors found in the proofs for geometric problems, further research on the types of such errors are needed.
Computational Geometry is concerned with the design and analysis of computational algorithms which solve geometry problems. Geometry problems have a large number of applications areas such as pattern recognition, image processing, computer graphics, VLSI design and statistics since they involve inherently geometric problems for which efficient algorithms have to be developed. Several parallel algorithms, based on various parallel computation models, have been proposed for solving geometric problems. We review the current status of the parallel algorithms in computational geometry.
The purpose of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of dynamic software in solving high school analytic geometry problems compared with traditional algebraic approach. Three high school students who have revealed high performance in mathematics were involved in this study. It was considered that they mastered the basic concepts of equations of plane figure and curves of secondary degree. The research questions for the study were the followings: 1) In what degree students understand relationship between geometric approach and algebraic approach in solving geometry problems? 2) What are the difficulties students encounter in the process of using the dynamic software? 3) In what degree the constructions of geometric figures help students to understand the mathematical concepts? 4) What are the effects of dynamic software in constructing analytic geometry concepts? 5) In what degree students have developed the images of algebraic concepts? According to the results of the study, it was revealed that mathematical connections between geometric approach and algebraic approach was complementary. And the students revealed more rely on the algebraic expression over geometric figures in the process of solving geometry problems. The conceptual images of algebraic expression were not developed fully, and they blamed it upon the current college entrance examination system.
This paper focuses on a number of criteria that enable controlling the influence of geometric simplification on the quality of finite element (FE) computations. To perform the mechanical simulation of a component, the corresponding geometric model typically needs to be simplified in accordance with hypotheses adopted regarding the component's mechanical behaviour. The method presented herein serves to compute an a posteriori indicator for the purpose of estimating the significance of each feature removal. This method can be used as part of an adaptive process of geometric simplification. If a shape detail removed during the shape simplification process proves to be influential on mechanical behaviour, the particular detail can then be reinserted into the simplified model, thus making it possible to readapt the initial simulation model. The fields of application for such a method are: static problems involving linear elastic behaviour, and linear thermal problems with stationary conduction.
In this article, thermal post-buckling and primary resonance of the porous functionally graded material (FGM) beams in thermal environment considering the geometric imperfection are studied, the material properties of FGM beams are assumed to vary along the thickness of the beam, meanwhile, the porosity volume fraction, geometric imperfection, temperature, and the elastic foundation are considered, using the Euler-Lagrange equation, the nonlinear vibration equations are derived, after the dimensionless processing, the dimensionless equations of motion can be obtained. Then, the two-step perturbation method is applied to solve the vibration problems, the resonance and thermal post-buckling response relations are obtained. Finally, the functionally graded index, the porosity volume fraction, temperature, geometric imperfection, and the elastic foundation on the resonance behaviors of the FGM beams are presented. It can be found that these parameters can influence the thermal post-buckling and primary resonance problems.
The purpose of this study is to analyze elementary students' understanding the relationship between perimeter and area in geometric figures. In this study, the questionaries were used. In the survey, the subjects were elementary school students in In-cheon city. They were 86 students of the fifth grade, 86 of the sixth. They were asked to solve the problems which was designed by the researcher and to describe the reasons why they answered like that. Study findings are as following; Students have misbelief about the concept of the relationship between perimeter and area in geometric figures. Therefore, 1 propose the method fur teaching about the relationship between perimeter and area in geometric figures. That is teaching via problem solving.. In teaching via problem solving, problems are valued not only as a purpose fur learning mathematics but also a primary means of doing so. For example, teachers give the problem relating the concepts of area and perimeter using a set of twenty-four square tiles. Students are challenged to determine the number of small tiles needed to make rectangle tables. Using this, students can recognize the concept of the relationship between perimeter and area in geometric figures.
In this study, I investigated how pre-service teachers (PSTs) proved three geometric problems by using Geometer's SketchPad (GSP) software. Based on observations in class and results from a test of geometric reasoning, eight PSTs were sorted into four of the five van Hiele levels of geometric reasoning, which were then used to predict the PSTs' levels of reasoning on three tasks involving proofs using GSP. Findings suggested that the ways the PSTs justified their geometric reasoning across the three questions demonstrated their different uses of GSP depending on their van Hiele levels. These findings also led to the insight that the notion of "proof" had somewhat different meanings for students at different van Hiele levels of thought. Implications for the effective integration of technology into pre-service teacher education programs are discussed.

We propose a new meshfree method to be called the fast moving least square reproducing kernel collocation method(FCM). This methodology is composed of the fast moving least square reproducing kernel(FMLSRK) approximation and the point collocation scheme. Using point collocation makes the meshfree method really come true. In this paper, FCM Is shown to be a good method at least to calculate the numerical solutions governed by second order elliptic partial differential equations with geometric singularity or geometric multi-scales. To treat such problems, we use the concept of variable dilation parameter.
