We evaluated the potential of the limestone deposits distributed in the Uljin area, the north-eastern part of Gyungsang province, based on the results of the surface and underground geological survey. The geology of the Uljin area consists mainly of the Cambro-Ordovician Joseon Supergroup correlated to the Duwibong sequence of the south-eastern part of Gangwon province. The Joseon Supergroup rested unconformably on the Precambrian schists is divided into six formations , namely, Maesan, Gusanri, Namsusan, Songchon, Mongcheon, and Keummaeri formations in ascending order. Main geological structures are two thrust faults with NS trending, some normal and reverse faults, and folds.
In Danyang area, various geological structures as well as various lithology and strata are well developed, which are useful for studying paleo-environment and structural movements, and also typical karst landforms, wethering landforms and river landforms. If geologically and geomorphologically valuable resources are used in terms of geotourim perspective, it is expected that revitalization of regional economy through diversification of attracting factors and employment creation of local people. Danyang has many excellent geological resources for geological field trip, they can greatly contribute to the development of geology such as expanding the base of geology and cultivating successive generations. In this study, we have evaluated newly discovered sites and previously excavated resources based on academical and educational values. By using these geological and geomorphological resources, we suggest three geotrail courses as follows. First, Geo-trail A is mainly focused on geological structures (Route A: Jeong Hwan Route), where we can learn geological deformation and movement through various brittle and ductile deformation structures. Second, Geo-trail B is mainly focused on stratigraphic importance (Route B: Soon-Bok Route), which emphasizes on various rocks, strata and contact relationship. Third, Geo-trail C is mainly focused on geomorphological landforms and landscapes (Route C: Satgat Route), which provide information about different geomorphological landforms and the interaction between different geological agents. In order to operate these geotrail courses efficiently, installation of explanation boards and view points, cultivate local commentators, and visitor centers and experience programs should be properly prepared together.
Drainage patterns were investigated to interpret the unknown geologic structure and geomorphic history in South Korea. Dendritic and rectangular patterns are most prominent ones developed in the granitic and sedimentary terrain. Drainage density ranges from 0.47 in the Nakdong river basin to 0.31 in the South Han river basin. Fine drainge texture is appeared in the Nakdong basin characterized by sedimentary beds of Mesozoic age, and coarse one are in the South Han river basin where Precambrian metamorphic rocks are dominated. Geological structures interpreted by stream pattern analysis are reasonally good agreement with the result by lineaments analysis and geological mapping.
Various geological structures are found on the slope of Bangnim district in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do, based on the Paleozoic Joseon Supergroup Limestone. The recumbent fold observed on the slope is a very rare geological structure that has not been found in Korea, and has important academic value in exploring the formation process of the Paleozoic geological structures in the Gangwon region. In this study, discussed the geological value of the geological structure observed on the slope of the road, and studied the management method of rockfall problem slopes. The state of development of recumbent folds has conservation value in geological scarcity and specificity. Preservation management measures should be prepared through the protection of slopes and measures to reduce of rockfall risks as geoheritage with an important value in geology science and education. Furthermore, it is expected to be preserved and utilized as a geopark.
We interpreted the evolutionary history of the southwestern part of the Pohang Basin, the largest Miocene basin in the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula, based on the detailed geological mapping and analysis of the geological structures. The southwestern part of the Pohang Basin can be divided into the Bomun Domain in the west and Ocheon Domain in the east by an NNE-trending horst-in-graben. These two domains have different geometries and deformation histories. The Bomun Domain was rarely deformed after the incipient extension of the basin, whereas the Ocheon Domain is an area where continued and overlapped deformations occurred after the basin fill deposition. Therefore, the Bomun Domain provides critical information on the initial extension mode of the Pohang Basin. The subsidence of the Bomun Domain was led by the zigzag-shaped western border fault that consists of NNE-striking normal and NNW-striking dextral strike-slip fault segments. This border fault is connected to the Yeonil Tectonic Line (YTL), a regional dextral principal displacement zone and the westernmost limit of Miocene crustal deformation in SE Korea. Therefore, it is interpreted that the Pohang Basin was initially extended in WNW-ESE direction as a transtensional fault-termination basin resulting from the movement of NNE-striking normal and/or oblique-slip faults formed as right-stepover in the northern termination of the YTL activated since approximately 17-16.5 Ma. As a result, an NNE-trending asymmetric graben or half-graben exhibiting an westward deepening of basin depth was formed in the Bomun Domain. Afterward, crustal extension and deformation were migrated to the east, including the Ocheon Domain.
It is very important in designing civil engineering structures that the quantification of geological informations must be carried out in terms of importance. In this study, the geological informations are quantified and evaluated using analytic hierarchy process (AHP). A professional group was organized with 30 people in the field of civil engineering, transport, and geology. On the assumption that the civil engineering structure is linear such as highway or railroad, a survey of the group in terms of geological and hydro-geological elements has found that the hierarchy structure is composed of four levels. And fault structure is a primary factor which causes the stability of a linear civil engineering structure. The importance of geological items are arranged with fault (0.456), foliation/bedding plane(0.l65), lineation(0.144), ground water(0.124), and rock type(0.111).
Underground storage cavern is known as the most complicated underground project because of the complexity of construction schedule, tunnel size, and geological problems. In order to optimize the construction schedule of underground storage cavern, two up-to-date technologies were applied. The first technology was 3 dimensional visualization of complicated underground structures, and the second was 4 dimensional simulation considering construction resources, geological conditions and construction schedule. This application case shows that we can achieve optimized construction schedule in the ways to optimize the number of work teams, fleets, the sequence of tunnel excavation, the commencement time of excavation and the hauling route of materials and excavated rocks. 3 dimensional modeling can help designer being able to understand the status of complicated underground structures and to investigate the geological data in the exact 3 dimensional space. Moreover, using 4 dimensional simulation, designer is able to determine the bottle neck point which appear during hauling of excavated rocks and to investigate the daily fluctuation in cost.

Even though various geological attractions are distributed domestically, the geological attractions are rarely utilized as field course site. The purpose of this study is to make Seonangbawi area as the field course site after geological investigations are carried out in detail. Seonangbawi is located about 1km southeast from Songjiho beach in Gangwon-do. Seonangbawi area is simply composed of Cretaceous Seokcho granite with the overlay of Quaternary alluvium. Geological field course in the Seonangbawi area will be useful to the student and citizen for developing the knowledge of geological phenomena, such as the formation of granite and minerals, and weathering process. In addition, the student and citizen can develop the knowledge of the geological structures, such as joint (N50E/80NW, N40W/84SW), fault (N42W/83SW), foliation (N32E/54SE), and dyke (N35E/40SE, N26W/63SW), and geographical features, such as tor, taforni, groove, and gnamma in the field. Accordingly, the Seonangbawi area is the best place to learn various geological and geographical phenomena and to discuss the origin of Seonangbawi with limited space.

Stability of cut-slope is considered to have a deep relationship with rock types since rock has its own engineering and geological characteristic such as shear strength, durability, weathering profile, geological structures. Therefore, analysis of geological and engineering characterisics of rock mass is essential for the evaluation of rock slope stability This paper introduces the statistical data of slope failure cases which was collected from highway slopes constructed in sedimentary rock mainly of shale in Ky ng-sang Basin. Primary failure feature in this area is planar failure along the bedding regardless of slope geometry. Even a disasterous slope failure case due to the thick clay layer between the beddings was reported. Failures and rock fall were reported to ocurred frequently after the completion of cutting due to the weathering, so long-term slope stability should be considered as a important factors in design.

This paper describes the development of an expert system designed to help engineers select proper foundation types and construction methods for structures under various subsoil conditions. The system includes geographical and geological data in certain areas of Ulsan and a knowledge base for the selection of foundation types. Geological data, such as boring logs, in the areas were collected and arranged to form the subsoil database in the areas concerned Test borings at 30 holes were carried out for reference and confirmation purposes. The use of this system is twofold. It provides the users with a quick view on the geological situations of the areas concerned, and suggests proper foundation types for the specific spot together with some explanations on the selected foundation types and methods.
