Many failures in cut slopes occur during and following road construction. Failures are caused, in part, by a lack of understanding of the characteristics of rock mass including its geologic structure. The stability of rock slopes is closely related to factors that include the type of rock, development of geological structures, weathering, characteristics of rock, and the shape of the geologic features. Therefore, it is very important to consider these characteristics of rock mass in the evaluation of rock slope stability. In spite of investigation from many slope failures, these information data were not systematically stored and not efficiently utilized. In this study, a Database system named DB/SLOPE was developed using Oracle for systematic management of cut slopes. The developed database system can be used to estimate of slope stability and to predict of slope failure.

The study area is located in the southern part of the M'aider Paleozoic basin in the Moroccan Eastern Anti-Atlas. It is an arid region, characterized by minimal vegetation cover, which can provide an ideal environment to apply remote sensing. In this study, remote sensing and field investigations were integrated for lithological and structural lineaments mapping. The Landsat 8 OLI data were processed in order to understand the role of lithology and geological structures in the distribution of mineral deposits in the study area. To achieve this purpose, the Color Composite (CC), the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Band Rationing transformation (BR) tests were performed. The results of remote sensing techniques coupled with field investigations have shown that the zones of high lineaments densities are highly correlated with the occurrences of barite mineralization. These findings depict a spatial relationship between structural lineaments and the mineralization distribution zones. Therefore, the barite and Iron oxides mineralization veins, which occur mainly in the Ras Kammouna district, seem to have a structural control. The methodological approach used in this study examining lithological mapping and lineament extractions can be used to explore mineral deposits in arid regions to a high degree of efficiency.

Array CSAMT surveys were conducted in two areas where it was not easy to identify the presence of faults only with geological survey because of thick overburden. The purpose of these surveys were to locate the faults and to delineate the deep resistivity structures around the faults. The steep dip lineaments having high contrast in resistivity laterally and the low resistive zones having some width in the resistivity sections were interpreted as faults and fracture zones associated with faults, respectively, The good applicability of array CSAMT to the investigation of fault was recognized owing to the agreement between the interpretation results of array CSAMT and the conclusive evidences collected by the following geological survey. The evidences includes the recent exposure of fault and the trajectory of fault evidences of the survey line. A comparison of the applicabilities of array CSAMT method and the resistivity method using dipole-dipole array was presented with the results of both methods along a same traverse line.
With improving computer penormance and advancing simulation techniques, a growing number of softwares are being developed for visualization of investigation results in geotechnical problems. It is a very important subject for geological site investigation to understand or predict if there would be any hazardous geological conclition that might cause any increase of construction costs or an extension of construction period. A 3-D (three-climensional) visualization technique may be one of the powerful tools to overcome an uncertainty problem of geologica] site investigatior. The paper describes an overview of a newly developed geotechnical 3-D interpretation system for the purpose of applying the 3-D visualization technique, GIS (geographic information system) and D/B (database) to tunnel design and construction. VR (virtual reality) and 3-D visualization techniques are applied in order to develope the 3-D model of characteristics and structures of rock mass. D/B system for all the materials related to site investigation and tunnel construction is developed using GIS technique. This system is very useful for civil engineers to make a plan of tunnel construction at the design stage and also during construction with the advantage of improving the economy and safety of tunnels.
The purpose of this study was to compare the difference of semantic network about sedimentary environment between science gifted students and non-gifted students through field trip. The fifteen high school science gifted students and non-gifted students were participated in the field trip for this study. The geological field trip was performed in Chaseokgang, which suitable learning place for sedimentary environments. Data included field trip observation and students' inquiry activity reports. The inquiry activity reports were analyzed using the semantic network analysis method. The results of this study were as follows: First, the semantic network of science gifted students was larger and complex structures than that of the non-gifted students. Second, science gifted students were interpreted that changes of sedimentary environment was connected with the sorting and the roundness. On the other hand, semantic network of non-gifted students were become fragmented because they were not interpreted sedimentary environment related to scientific concepts.
The concept of resilience seems applicable for sustainable groundwater management. The resilience is broadly defined as the ability of a system to resist changes by external forces (EFs), and has been used for disaster management and climate change adaptation, including the groundwater resilience to climate change in countries where groundwater is a major water resource, whereas not yet in the geological society of South Korea. The resilience is qualitatively assessed using the absorptive, adaptive, and restorative capacity representing the internal robustness, self-organization, and external recovery resources, respectively, while quantitatively using the system impact (SI) and recovery effort (RE). When the groundwater is considered a complicated system where physicochemical, biological, and geological components interact, the groundwater resilience can be defined as the ability of groundwater to maintain the targeted quality and quantity at any EFs. For the quantitative assessment, however, the resilience should be specified to an EF and measurable parameters should be available for SI and RE. This study focused on groundwater resilience to two EFs in urban areas, i.e., pollution due to land use change and groundwater withdrawal for underground structures. The resilience to each EF was assessed using qualitative components, while measurements for SI and RE were discussed.

Geotechnical risk factors encountered in intermediate-depth underground tunnel construction are diverse, and the types and standards of risk factors are different according to the depth and regional geological characteristics of Korea. In order to understand the effects of geological characteristics and geologic structure on safety, which show various porous characteristics of urban underground complex ground, the risk factors of intermediate-depth rock mass in Korea were analyzed based on domestic and foreign cases. As a result of the study, seven categories affecting the stability of the intermediate-depth tunneling, namely, geologic structure, rock characteristics, hydrogeology, overburden, high stress, ground characteristics and artificial structures, and about 22 risk factors were derived. We present the risk criteria and interval values for risk evaluation of faults, folds, dikes, and rocks that have the greatest influence among risk factors. Criteria and interval values for other risk factors are under study.
There are numerous structural details (Longitudinal beam, web plate, U-ribs and I-ribs) in the top and bottom plates of steel box girders, which have significant influences on the longitudinal stress (normal stress) distribution. Clarifying the influence of these structural details on the normal stress distribution is important. In this paper, the ultra-wide steel box girder with large cantilevers of the Jinhai Bridge in China, which is the widest cable-stayed bridge in the world, has been analyzed. A 1:4.5 scale laboratory model of the steel box girder has been manufactured, and the influence of structural details on the normal stress distribution in the top and bottom plates for four different load cases has been analyzed in detail. Furthermore, a three-dimensional finite element model has been established to further investigate the influence regularity of structural details on the normal stress. The experimental and finite element analysis (FEA) results have shown that different structural details of the top and bottom plates have varying effects on the normal stress distribution. Notably, the U-ribs and I-ribs of the top and bottom plates introduce periodicity to the normal stress distribution. The period of the influence of U-ribs on the normal stress distribution is the sum of the single U-rib width and the U-rib spacing, and that of the influence of I-ribs on the normal stress distribution is equal to the spacing of the I-ribs. Furthermore, the same structural details but located at different positions, will have a different effect on the normal stress distribution.
In field surveys using the dipole-dipole electrical resistivity method, we often encounter negative apparent resistivity. The term 'negative apparent resistivity' refers to apparent resistivity values with the opposite sign to surrounding data in a pseudosection. Because these negative apparent resistivity values have been regarded as measurement errors, we have discarded the negative apparent resistivity data. Some people have even used negative apparent resistivity data in an inversion process, by taking absolute values of the data. Our field experiments lead us to believe that the main cause for negative apparent resistivity is neither measurement errors nor the influence of self potentials. Furthermore, we also believe that it is not caused by the effects of induced polarization. One possible cause for negative apparent resistivity is the subsurface geological structure. In this study, we provide some numerical examples showing that negative apparent resistivity can arise from geological structures. In numerical examples, we simulate field data using a 3D numerical modelling algorithm, and then extract 2D sections. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that the negative apparent resistivity can be caused by geological structures modelled by U-shaped and crescent-shaped conductive models. Negative apparent resistivity usually occurs when potentials increase with distance from the current electrodes. By plotting the voltage-electrode position curves, we could confirm that when the voltage curves intersect each other, negative apparent resistivity appears. These numerical examples suggest that when we observe negative apparent resistivity in field surveys, we should consider the possibility that the negative apparent resistivity has been caused by geological structure.
Geophysical surveys(seismic refraction, electrical resistivity, and ground penetrating radar) were performed to delineate the weathering zone associated with vadose water in Chojeong area and investigate the fault related fracture zones. On the basis of seismic velocity structures, weathering layer for the southwestern part is interpreted to be deeper than for the northeastern part. The depth to bedrock(i.e., thickness of weathered zone) from seismic refraction data attempted to be correlated with drill-core data and groundwater level. As for the investigation of geological discontinuities such as fault related fracture zone, seismic refraction, electrical resistivity, and ground penetrating data are compositely employed in terms of velocity and resistivity structures for mapping of surface boundary of the discontinuities up to shallow depth. Surface boundaries of fracture zone are well indicated in seismic velocity and electrical resistivity structures. Accurate estimation of weathered zone and fracture zone can be successfully available for mapping of attitude of vadose water layer.
