  • In order to enhance the thermal stability of binder materials of bonded type solid lubricants, several metal-alkoxide based sol-gel materials such as methyltrimethoxysilane(MTMOS), titaniumisopropoxide$(Ti(Opr^i)_4),$ zirconiumisopropoxide $(Zr(Opr^i)_4)$ and aluminumbutoxide$(Al(Obu^t)_4)$ were chemically modified by epoxy-, acrylic- and fluoro-silane compounds, respectively. Friction and wear characteristics of these hybrid ceramic materials were tested with a micro tribo-tester, and evaluated with respect to both heat-curing temperature and the time. Test results generally showed that hybrid ceramic materials modified by epoxy-silane compounds had a low friction compared to others. And the higher het-curing temperature and the longer heat treatment time resulted in the higher friction and the lower wear. IR spectroscopic analyses revealed that these results were caused mainly by the increased metal oxide content in hybrid ceramics when the heat-curing temperature was over $320^{\circ}C.$

  • $LiCoO_{2}$ thin films have received attention as cathodes of thin film microbatteries in these days. In this study, $LiCoO_{2}$ thin films are fabricated by a sol-gel spin coating method followed by a post-annealing process. The thermal decomposition behaviour of precursor is investigated by TG/DTA analysis. The change of crystallinity, microstructure and electrochemical properties of final films as the drying temperature changes are also studied by XRD, SEM and galvanostatic charge/discharge cycling test. The relationship between the discharge capacity and the drying temperature are intensively investigated in this work.

  • In this report, the structural and optical properties of sol-gel derived $Mg_xZn_{1-x}O$ thin films upon changes in the composition and annealing temperature were investigated. The $Mg^{2+}$ content and the annealing temperature were varied in the range of $0{\leq}x{\leq}0.35$ and $400^{\circ}C{\leq}T{\leq}600^{\circ}C$, respectively. The films exhibited a hexagonal wurtzite structure of a polycrystalline nature. The optical transmittance exceeded 85% and the optical band gap of the film was tuned as high as 3.84 eV at a value of x = 0.35 (annealed at $400^{\circ}C$), which was evidently the maximum $Mg^{2+}$ content for the single-phase polycrystalline $Mg_xZn_{1-x}O$ thin films prepared in this experiment. The optical band gap and photoluminescence emission were tailored to the higher energy side while maintaining crystallinity without a significant change of the lattice constant.

  • Silica nano-powder (SNP) is an inorganic material able to provide high-performance in various fields because of its multiple functions. Methods used to synthesize high purity SNP, include crushing silica minerals, vapor reaction of silica chloride, and a sol-gel process using TEOS and sodium silicate solution. The sol-gel process is the cheapest method for synthesis of SNP, and was used in this study. First, we investigated the shape and the size of the silica-powder particles in relation to the variation of HCl and sodium silicate concentrations. After drying, the shape of nano-silica powder differed in relation to variations in the HCl concentration. As the pH of the solution increased, so did the density of crosslinking. Initially, there was NaCl in the SNP. To increase its purity, we adopted a washing process that included centrifugation and filtration. After washing, the last of the NaCl was removed using DI water, leaving only amorphous silica powder. The purity of nano-silica powder synthesized using sodium silicate was over 99.6%.

  • The gel polymer electrolyte(GPE) were prepared by in-situ thermal cross-linking reaction of homogeneous precursor solution of perfluorinated phosphate-based cross-linker and liquid electrolyte. Ionic conductivities and electrochemical properties of the prepared gel polymer electrolyte with the various contents of liquid electrolytes and perfluorinated organophosphate-based cross-linker were examined. The stable gel polymer electrolyte was obtained up to 97 wt% of the liquid electrolyte. Ionic conductivity and electrochemical properties of the gel polymer electrolytes with the various chain length of perfluorinated ethylene oxide and different content of liquid electrolytes were examined. The maximum ionic conductivity of liquid electrolyte was measured to be $1.02\;{\times}\;10^{-2}\;S/cm$ at $30^{\circ}C$ using the cross-linker($PFT_nGA$). The electrochemical stability of the gel polymer electrolyte was extended to 4.5 V. The electrochemical performances of test cells composed of the resulting gel polymer electrolyte were also studied to evaluate the applicability on the lithium polymer batteries. The test cell carried a discharge capacity of 136.11mAh/g at 0.1C. The discharge capacity was measured to be 91% at 2C rate. The discharge capacity decreased with increase of discharge rate which was due to the polarization. After 500th charge/discharge cycles, the capacity of battery decreased to be 70% of the initial capacity.

  • Gel polymer electrolyte membranes were prepared from blends of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and poly (acrylic acid) (PAA), by solution-cast technique. The PAA content in the blend varied from 30 to 80 wt%. With the gel polymer electrolyte membranes, Zn air batteries were fabricated. The gel polymer electrolyte membranes were characterized by means of stress-strain test, impedance test. The Zn air batteries were tested by current interrupt method and galvanostatic discharge method. The tensile strength and tensile modulus decreased with increasing PAA content in the gel polymer electrolyte membrane. On the other hand, the ionic conductivity increased with increasing PAA content. The effect of ionic conductivity trend of the gel polymer electrolyte membrane in the Zn air battery was confirmed through current interrupt method and galvanostatic discharge method experiments. The battery with higher PAA content gel polymer electrolyte membrane showed lower IR drop and higher discharge capacity.

  • Flexible dye-sensitized solar cells using binder free $TiO_2$ paste for low temperature sintering are developed. In this paste a small amount of titanium gel is added to a paste of $TiO_2$ nanoparticle. Analysis of titanium gel paste prepared at $150^{\circ}C$ shows that it has a pure anatase phase in XRD and mesoporous structure in SEM. The formation of the titanium gel 1-2 nm coated layer is confirmed by comparing the TEM image analysis of the titanium gel paste and the pristine paste. This coating layer improves the excited electron transfer and electrical contact between particles. The J-V curves of the organic binder DSSCs fabricated at $150^{\circ}C$ shows a current density of $0.12mA/cm^2$ and an open-circuit voltage of 0.47 V, while the titanium gel DSSCs improves electrical characteristics to $5.04mA/cm^2$ and 0.74 V. As a result, the photoelectric conversion efficiency of the organic binder DSSC prepared at low temperature is as low as 0.02 %, but the titanium gel paste DSSCs has a measured effciency of 2.76 %.

  • The fabrication process of zirconia gel-casting was studied to obtain dense zirconia on a large scale or with complicated shapes. As an experimental parameter, two different particle sizes ($0.1{\mu}m$ and $0.7{\mu}m$) of zirconia powder were applied to the gel-casting process. The viscosity behavior of slurries incorporating 40 vol% of zirconia powder was examined as a function of the dispersant content and the solid load to determine the optimum dispersion conditions. In addition, the gelation time with an initiator, the de-binding behavior, and the main factors affecting densification were examined. The densification of the gel-casted zirconia green body depended on the mixing ratio between the monomer and the dimer and on the zirconia particle size. A green body with a small particle size of $0.1{\mu}m$ showed less densification, with a relative density of 93%. This may be due to the excess number of bubbles created through interactions between the larger particle surface and polymer additives during the ball-milling process.

  • To survive in outdoor environments, photovoltaic modules rely on packaging materials to provide requisite durability. We analyzed the properties of encapsulant materials that are important for photovoltaic module packaging. Recently, the thickness of solar cell gets thinner to reduce the quantity of silicon. And the reduced thickness make it easy to be broken while PV module fabrication process. Solar cell's micro cracks are increasing the breakage risk over the whole value chain from the wafer to the finished module, because the wafer or cell is exposed to tensile stress during handling and processing. This phenomenon might make PV module's maximum power and durability down. So, when using thin solar cell for PV module fabrication, it is needed to optimize the material and fabrication condition which is quite different from normal thick solar cell process. Normally, gel-content of EVA sheet should be higher than 80% so PV module has long term durability. But high gel-content characteristic might cause micro-crack on solar cell. In this experiment, we fabricated several specimen by varying curing temperature and time condition. And from the gel-content measurement, we figure the best fabrication condition. Also we examine the crack generation phenomenon during experiment.

  • Multiple particle tracking microrheology is used to characterize the viscoelastic properties of biomaterial and synthetic polymer gels near the liquid-solid transition. Probe particles are dispersed in the gel precursors, and their dynamics are measured as a function of the extent of reaction during gel formation. We interpret the dynamics using the generalized Stokes-Einstein relationship (GSER), using a form of the GSER that emphasizes the relationship between the probe particle mean-squared displacement and the material creep compliance. We show that long-standing concepts in gel bulk rheology are applicable to microrheological data, including time-cure superposition to identify the gel point and critical scaling exponents, and the power-law behavior of incipient network's viscoelastic response. These experiments provide valuable insight into the rheology, structure, and kinetics of gelling materials, and are especially powerful for studying the weak incipient networks of dilute gelators, as well as scarce materials, due to the small sample size requirements and rapid data acquisition.
