  • This study is concerned with implementing an external memory expansion device for large-scale image processing. It consists of an external memory adapter card with a PCI(Peripheral Component Interconnect) Express Gen3 x8 interface mounted on a graphics workstation for image processing and an external memory board with external DDR(Dual Data Rate) memory. The connection between the memory adapter card and the external memory board is made through the optical interface. In order to access the external memory, both Programmable I/O and DMA(Direct Memory Access) methods can be used to efficiently transmit and receive image data. We implemented the result of this study using the boards equipped with Altera Stratix V FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) and 40G optical transceiver and the test result shows 1.6GB/s bandwidth performance.. It can handle one channel of 4K UHD(Ultra High Density) image. We will continue our study in the future for showing bandwidth of 3GB/s or more.

  • The current trend of low cost ultra-small satellites is to utilize Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) parts to save cost, and accordingly, Command and Data Handling (C&DH) that operates the satellite and collects/processes the data is also designed and developed around commercial controllers. However, functionalities of commercial controllers are limited according to the specs outlined by the manufacturer. In order for the commercial controllers to be used for satellites where variety of interfaces is required, a separate interface circuit is required. Therefore, a Multi Digital Data Control System (MDDCS) using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) has been developed in order to expand multiple digital interfaces that are not supported by the commercial controller, and also to compensate for SEU. This has been implemented on Actel A3P1000 using Very High Speed Integrated Circuits Hardware Description Language (VHDL).

The ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) chip is be implemented through targeting and board test. This 12Mbps modem SoC includes the ARM (Advanced RISC Machine)7TDMI, 64Kbyte SRAM(Static Random Access Memory) and ADC (Analog to Digital Converter)/DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) for flexible applications. Additionally, the modem SoC can support the variable communication interfaces such as the 16-bits PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association), USB (Universal Serial Bus) 1.1, and 16C550 Compatible UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter).

  • Field Programmable Gate Array(FPGA)s are replacing traditional integrated circuits for space applications due to their lower development cost as well as reconfigurability. However, they are very sensitive to single event upset (SEU) caused by space radiation environment. In order to mitigate the SEU, on-board computer of STSAT-3 employed a triple modular redundancy(TMR) and scrubbing scheme. Experimental results showed that upset threshold energy was improved from 10.6 MeV to 20.3 MeV when the TMR and the scrubbing were applied to the on-board computer. Combining the experimental results with the orbit simulation results, calculated bit-flip rate of on-board computer is 1.23 bit-flips/day assuming in the worst case of STSAT-3 orbit.

  • This paper presents the architecture and design of a DSSS MODEM ASIC chip for wireless local area networks (WLAN). The implemented MODEM chip supports the DSSS physical layer specifications of the IEEE 802.11. The chip consits of a transmitter and a receiver which contain a CRC encoder/decoder, a differential encoder/decoder, a frequency offset compensator and a timing recovery circuit. The chip supports various data rates, i.e., 4,2 and 1Mbps and provides both DBPSK and DQPSK for data modulation. We have performed logic synthesis using the $SAMSUNG^{TM}$ $0.6{\mu}m$ gate array library and the implemented chip consists of 53,355 gates. The MODEM chip operates at 44MHz, the package type is 100-pin QFP and the power consumption is 1.2watt at 44MHz. The implemented MODEM architecture shows lower BER compared with the Harris HSP3824.

  • This paper presents the design of a graphic memory for QVGA-scale LCD Driver IC (LDI). The graphic memory is designed based on the pseudo-SHAM for the purpose of small area, and the memory cell structure is designed using a bit line partitioning method to improve sensing characteristics and drivabilties in the line-read operation. Also, a collision protection circuit using C-gate is designed to control collisions between read/write operations and self-refresh/line-read operations effectively. The graphic memory circuit has been designed in transistor level using $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS technology library and the operations of the graphic memory have been verified using Hspice. The results show that the bit-bitb line voltage difference, ${\Delta}V$ increases by 40%, the charge sharing time between bit and bitb voltages $T_{CHGSH}$ decreases by 30%, and the current during line-read decreases by 40%.

  • In this paper, the prototype of one-channel gamma-ray spectroscope for automatic radiopharmaceutical systhesis system was designed and characterized. The prototype employed CZT (CdZnTe) spear detector for gamma-ray detection and employed analog-type signal processing method. A radioactive sample Co-60 was used for measuring performance of the gamma-ray spectroscope and energy spectrum is gained with bandwidth of 1173keV. The analog board is made up of SF (shaping filter) and PHA (peak and hold amplifier) for shaping CZT output signal appropriately and ADC (analog to digital converter) and FPGA (field programmable gate array) for drawing gamma-ray spectrum by counting the digitalized gamma-ray signal data.

  • In this Paper, we propose an optimized method of hardware design based on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to detect rotated angle of high definition image about Extreme Contour Point (ECP) algorithm with moving video image could be not happened to translation motion, but also physical rotation motion. It was evaluated by XC7Z020 xc7z020-3clg400 FPGA board by using xilinx 14.2 tool. The much well-known method, the Coordinate Rotation Digital Integrated Computation (CORDIC) is an algorithm to estimate rotated angle between point and point. Through the result both ECP and CORDIC, our proposed design are confirmed to have similar operating speed of about 4ns with CORDIC. However, it is verified to have high performance result in terms of the hardware cost, is much better than CORDIC with cost reduction of registers and Look Up Tables (LUTs) of 108% and 91%, respectively.

  • This paper describes the design of a space-division switch which can support a self-healing operation of 2-fiber bidirectional line switched ring in 2.5Gb/s SDH-based transmission system. The switch having a 1.25Gb/s throughput has been designed and implemented with COMPASS tool and 0.87$\mu\textrm{m}$ CMOS gate-array. The proposed switch is suitable for the quickly self-healing operations when a failure occurs in a 2-fiber bidirectional switched ring composed of ADM transmission systems. The switch is composed of an add/drop control part, a cross-point switch, a frame-phase aligner, processor interface and an unequipped data framer. The test results of the switch adapted to 2.SGb/s SDH-based transmission system, show immediate restoration when a failure occurs.

  • Recently, small radar has been reduced in size and power consumption to cope with various operating environments. It also requires the development of a small millimeter wave radar with high range resolution to disable the system of target with a single strike. In this paper, we design and implement a signal processor that can be used in small millimeter wave radar. The signal processor for the small millmeter wave radar is designed with a digital IF(Intermediate Frequency) receiver and DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) module capable of real time FFT operation for miniaturization and low power consumption. Also it was to leverage the FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) and DAC(Digital Analog Converter) as a means for correcting the distortion of signals that can occur in the receive path of the small millimeter wave radar to create a RF signal that is used by the system. Finally, we verified the signal processor presented through performance test
