  • The reduction behavior of low level oxides such as (T.Fe), (MnO) and ($P_2O_5$) in molten EAF slag was investigated using commercial reductants. In an air atmosphere, the slag volume increased and the reduction rate of the slag was very low due to the oxidation loss of reductants by oxygen in the air. The reduction rate of the slag was also low when a commercial reductant was used alone in an Ar gas atmosphere. The reason is probably because the material transfer through the interface between the slag and reductant is difficult due to the formation of high melting point oxide. When reductants were mixed with burnt lime in order to form low melting point reaction products, the reduction rate of the slag increased up to the range of 45-70%. By using the mixtures of reductants and burnt lime so as to form a low melting point slag at the reaction end, the reduction rate of the slag was improved up to 60-85%.

  • Electrochemical devices are constructed for continuous syngas (CO + H2) production with controlled selectivity between CO2 and proton reduction reactions. The ratio of CO to H2, or the faradaic efficiency toward CO generation, was mechanically manipulated by adjusting the space volume between the cathode and the polymer gas separator in the device. In particular, the area added between the cathode and the ion-conducting polymer using 0.5 M KHCO3 catholyte regulated the solution acidity and proton reduction kinetics in the flow cell. The faradaic efficiency of CO production was controlled as a function of the distance between the polymer separator and cathode in addition to that manipulated by the electrode potential. Further, the electrochemical CO2 reduction device using Au NPs presented a stable operation for more than 23 h at different H2:CO production levels, demonstrating the functional stability of the flow cell utilizing the mechanical variable as an important operational factor.

  • Objectives: Fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printer which is one of the material extrusion (MEX) technologies is an additive manufacturing (AM) process. 3D printers have been distributed widely in Korea, particularly in school and office, even at home. Several studies have shown that nanoparticles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were emitted from an FDM 3D printing process. The objective of this study was to identify types of chemicals possibly emitted from FDM 3D printing materials such as PLA (polylactic acid), ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), nylon, PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol), PVA (polyvinyl alcohol), PC (polycarbonate) filaments. Methods: 19 FDM 3D printing filaments which have been distributed in Korea were selected and analyzed VOCs emitted of 3D printing materials by headspace gas chromatography mass spectrometry (headspace GC-MS). Subsamples were put into a vial and heated up to 200℃ (500 rpm) during 20 minutes before analyzing FDM 3D printing filaments. Results: In the case of PLA filament, lactide and methyl methacrylate, the monomer components of one, were detected, and the volume ratio ranged 27~93%, 0.5~37% respectively. In the case of ABS filaments, styrene (50.5~59.1%), the monomer components of one, was detected. Several VOCs among acetaldehyde, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, etc were detected from each FDM 3D printing filaments. Conclusions: Several VOCs, semi-VOCs were emitted from FDM 3D printing filaments in this study and previous studies. Users were possibly exposed to ones so that we strongly believe that we recommend to install the ventilation system such as a local exhaust ventilation (LEV) when they operate the FDM 3D printers in a workplace.

  • Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) has a low thermal conductivity, high thermal expansion coefficient, and excellent mechanical properties; thus, it is used as a thermal barrier coating material for gas turbines. However, during long-time exposure of YSZ to temperatures of 1200℃ or higher, a phase transformation accompanied by a volume change occurs, causing the YSZ coating layer to peel off. To solve this problem, YSZ has been doped with trivalent and tetravalent oxides to obtain coating materials with low thermal conductivity and suppressed phase transformation of zirconia. In this study, YSZ is doped with trivalent oxides, Nd2O3, Yb2O3, Al2O3, and tetravalent oxide, TiO2, and the thermal conductivity of the obtained materials is analyzed according to the composition; furthermore, the relative density change, microstructure change, and m-phase formation behavior are analyzed during long-time heat treatment at high temperatures.

  • In this study, a numerical simulations were conducted to analyze the phase change behavior of a liquid hydrogen storage container. The effects of gravity direction and hydrogen filling rate on boil-off gas (BOG) in the storage container were investigated. The study employed the volume of fluid, which is the phase change analysis model provided by ANSYS Fluent (ANSYS, Canonsburg, PA, USA), to investigate the sloshing phenomenon inside the liquefied hydrogen fuel tank. Considering the transient analysis time, two-dimensional simulation were carried out to examine the characteristics of the flow and thermal fields. The results indicated that the thermal flow characteristics and BOG phenomena inside the two-dimensional liquefied hydrogen storage container were significantly influenced by changes in gravity direction and hydrogen filling rate.

  • The emissions trading system, introduced to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, experienced a sharp increase in emission allowance prices during the second plan period (2018-2020), which led to an increase in the demand for smooth supply and demand of emission allowances, while suppliers anticipating a shortage of emission allowances in the future did not participate in trading. Therefore, the authority temporarily revised the guidelines to ensure that the amount of allowances carried forward is proportional to the trading volume as a market stabilization measure. Through an optimization process using a dynamic nonlinear mathematical model, this paper analyzes the impact of the government's intervention on the carryover policy on GHG emission reductions and emission allowance market prices. According to the simulation analysis results, banking regulations could cause a decline in prices during the regulation period, even though the initial policy was predicted to be adopted.

  • Recently, a study on alternative and renewable energy is being conducted due to energy depletion and environmental problems. In particular, a hydrogen has the advantage of converting and storing the remaining energy into water-electrolyzed hydrogen through renewable energy generation. In general, due to reasons such as insulation problems, a study on high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks and related parts has recently been conducted. However, in the case of liquid hydrogen, the volume can be reduced by about 800 times or more compared to high-pressure hydrogen gas, so the study on this is needed as a technology that can increase energy density. In this study, the evaporation characteristics were analyzed under fixed heat flux conditions for liquid hydrogen storage tanks and the change in thermal stratification according to sloshing was analyzed. The heat flux condition was fixed at 250 W/m2 and the horizontal resonance frequency of the primary mode was applied to the storage tank. As a result, it was confirmed that the thermal stratification phenomenon decreased compared to the case where the slashing was not present due to forced convection when the slashing was present.

  • This study examined the trade of the Central Asian CIS countries and the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region. These countries are rich in resources such as oil, natural gas and aluminum. These countries were switched to capitalist market economy after independence from the Soviet Union. So, these countries are considered as new emerging markets. This study analyzed the current status of trade between Daegu-Gyeongbuk region and Central Asian CIS countries. The result of analysis of the trade structure between the Daegu-Gyeongbuk and Central Asian CIS countries, and of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region exports to Central Asian CIS countries showed insufficience when compared with the total export of korea. In this study, we used the gravity model to analyze the trade volume of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region and Central Asian CIS countries. The result of analysis is that the globalization of Central Asian CIS countries appeared to be effective in increasing trade. In order to increase trade, Korea and CIS countries should strengthen their economic cooperation. Especially, these countries should try to implement FTAs for economic integration. The Central Asian CIS countries have an industrial structure that relies on resource exports. So, they have a blueprint for diversification of industries through national long-term plans. The Daegu-Gyeongbuk region's economy has been going through long-term stagnation. If the Daegu-Gyeongbuk companies can enter the Central Asian CIS countries, it can be a solution for the local economy.

  • In this study, we investigated the errors that students committed in the processes of constructing graphs on experimental results by the students' science achievement level. A test of constructing a graph about 'the relationship between the pressure and volume of a gas' was administered to 7th graders (N=145). Results revealed that most students committed errors in the processes of constructing the graph, showing 12 error types in the categories of 'Misinterpreting the variables', 'Mismarking the graphical elements', and 'Misusing the data'. The students in the lower achievement level had more errors than those in the higher achievement level in the two error types, that is 'representing the bar graph' and 'marking the scale in the presented data order', but the results were reversed in the three error types, that is 'marking the independent variable and dependent variable reversely', 'adding the data', and 'neglecting the data'. In the other error types, there were little differences in the frequencies of the errors by students' science achievement level.

  • In this study, we investigated the influences of the role-playing analogy in chemistry concept learning on mapping understanding and mapping errors by analogical reasoning ability level. Seventh-graders (N=151) at a middle school were assigned to the comparison group and the experimental group. The students of the experimental group were taught with the 'running in the circle' role-playing analogy. After the students were taught about 'the relation between volume and pressure of gas', the test of mapping understanding in the next class and the retention test four weeks later were administered. The students with typical mapping errors were also interviewed to investigate their mapping processes. The results revealed that the role-playing analogy in chemistry concept learning improved mapping understanding and its retention regardless of analogical reasoning ability level. It was also found that the students in the experimental group had fewer mapping errors than those in the comparison group. However, there were similar patterns of mapping errors in both groups, and there were no significant differences in the frequencies of each type of mapping errors by analogical reasoning ability level. Educational implication of these findings are discussed.
