  • We have gone into details about the velocity calibration of sinusoidal mode for Mossbauer spectrometer. Since sinusoidal Mossbauer spectrometer has a ${\gamma}$-ray source that oscillates at the end of loudspeaker with the natural frequency. Doppler velocity is accurate and stable. From the analyzing Mossbauer spectra of $Fe_3O_4$ and U $Fe_3O_4$ (unbalanced $Fe_3O_4$), we have shown the power of correct velocity for sinusoidal mode.

  • NEOs are comets and asteroids that have been nudged by the gravitational attraction of nearby planets into orbits that allow them to enter the Earth's neighborhood. When the NEOs with certain size impact in the Earth's surface, it could cause a serious disaster. However, the NEOs that are potentially the most hazardous because they can closely approach the Earth are also the objects that could bemost easily exploited for their raw materials. This paper presents the characteristics of NEOs and the technology trend of advanced countries on spacecraft missions to comets and asteroids.

  • The activity concentration of primordial radionuclides i.e., $^{238}U$ series, $^{232}Th$ series and $^{40}K$, in soil samples collected from Udagamandalam environment, have been measured by employing NaI (Tl) Gamma ray Spectrometer. The absorbed gamma dose rate has also been simultaneously measured by using both Environmental Radiation Dosimeter at each soil sampling location (ambient gamma dose) as well as from the gamma dose derived from the activity concentration of the primordial radionuclides. The results of activity concentration of each radio nuclides in soil, absorbed dose rate in air due to soil activity and possible cosmic radiation at each location along with human effective dose equivalent for Udagamandalam environment are presented and discussed.

  • Radiation damage in a single crystal of ammonium sulfate caused by ${\gamma}$-irradiation at room temperature has given rise to several paramagnetic centers. Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of crystal are obtained with the X-band EPR spectrometer at room temperature. An intense and isotropic peak of Gaussian shape at g = 2.0036 is assigned to $SO_3^-$, which shows power saturation effects. Angular dependence of spectra is studied for the rotations about three mutually perpendicular axes a, b and c. The g-values are obtained from the relative distances between isotropic peak of $SO_3^-$ and anisotropic peak of the species. Principal $g^-$values and direction cosines were calculated by diagonalizing the 3${\times}$3 matrix whose elements are the $g^-$values for each species. From the analysis of characteristic principal $g^-$values and direction cosines for ammonium sulfate single crystal, anisotropic peaks corresponding to $SO_4^-,\;SO_2^-$ and defect structure corresponding to electron excess type are identified.

  • A neutron generation system was developed to induce fissile fission in a lead slowing down spectrometer (LSDS) system. The source neutron is one of the key factors for LSDS system work. The LSDS was developed to quantify the isotopic contents of fissile materials in spent nuclear fuel and recycled fuel. The source neutron is produced at a multilayered target by the (e,${\gamma}$)(${\gamma}$,n) reaction and slowed down at the lead medium. Activation analysis of the target materials is necessary to estimate the lifetime, durability, and safety of the target system. The CINDER90 code was used for the activation analysis, and it can involve three-dimensional geometry, position dependent neutron flux, and multigroup cross-section libraries. Several sensitivity calculations for a metal target with different geometries, materials, and coolants were done to achieve a high neutron generation rate and a low activation characteristic. Based on the results of the activation analysis, tantalum was chosen as a target material due to its better activation characteristics, and helium gas was suggested as a coolant. In addition, activation in a lead medium was performed. After a distance of 55 cm from the lead surface to the neutron incidence, the neutron intensity dramatically decreased; this result indicates very low activation.

  • The airborne radiation monitoring has been used in geophysics for more than forty years and now it also has its important role in emergency monitoring. The aircraft background and the cosmic gamma-rays contribute to the measured gamma spectrum on the aircraft board. This adverse effect should be eliminated before the data processing. The paper describes two semiparametric methods to estimate the full spectrum aircraft background and cosmic gamma-ray contribution from spectra measured at altitudes where terrestrial contribution is negligible. The methods only assume to know possible peak positions in spectra and their full width at half maximum, that can be easily obtained e.g. from terrestrial measurement. The methods were applied to real experimental data acquired on Mi-17 and Bell 412 helicopter boards. The IRIS airborne gamma-ray spectrometer, with 4×4 L NaI(Tl) crystals, produced by Pico Envirotec Inc., Canada, was used on helicopters' boards. To obtain valid estimate of the aircraft background and the cosmic contribution, the measurements over sea and large water areas were carried out. However, the satisfactory results over inland were also achieved comparing with those acquired over large water areas.

  • Directional correlation measurements for the Co-60 and Cs-134 cascade gamma-rays have been performed in the angular range from 90$^{\circ}$ to 180$^{\circ}$ by use of the fast coincidence scintillation spectrometer incorporated with a gamma-ray polarimeter based on the Compton scattering effect to determine the polarization correlations. The experimental method together with the theoretical background is described, and the results are shown graphically to represent the consistency of the measurement with approximate theoretical estimates.

  • The program of performing a fast and automatic analysis of gamma ray spectra obtained by a Multi-Channel Analyzer (MCA) is developed for the surveillance of the nuclear fuel integrity. The integrity of the nuclear fuel is confirmed by the measurement of the radiation level of the reactor coolant through the real time monitoring and the periodic sampling analysis. In Yonggwang nuclear power plane 3 and 4, the Process Radiation Monitoring System (PRMS), which is a real time monitoring system, provides a measure of the fuel integrity. Currently, its spectrometer channel can identify only one radionuclide at a time since the signal processing unit of the spectrometer channel is a Single Channel Analyzer (SCA). To improve the PRMS, it is necessary to substitute the MCA for the SCA The program is operated in a real time mode and an on-demand mode, and automatically performed for all procedures. The test results by using the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) mixed standard source are in good agreement with those from Canberra System 100 which is a commercial MCA Consequently, the developed program seems to be employed for automatic monitoring of gamma rays in nuclear power plants.

  • After the Fukushima accident in 2011, there has been increased public concern about radioactive contamination of water resources through fallout in neighboring countries. However, there is still no available initial response system that can promptly detect radionuclides. The purpose of this research is to develop the most efficient gamma spectrometer to monitor radionuclides in an aquatic environment. We chose a thallium-doped sodium iodide (NaI(Tl)) scintillator readout with a silicon photo multiplier (SiPM) due to its compactness and low operating voltage. Three types of a scintillation detector were tested. One was composed of a scintillator and a photomultiplier tube (PMT) as a reference; another system consisted of a scintillator and an array of SiPMs with a light guide; and the other was a scintillator directly coupled with an array of SiPMs. Among the SiPM-based detectors, the direct coupling system showed the best energy resolution at all energy peaks. It achieved 9.76% energy resolution for a 662 keV gamma ray. Through additional experiments and a simulation, we proved that the light guide degraded energy resolution with increasing statistical uncertainty. The results indicated that the SiPM-based scintillation detector with no light guide is the most efficient design for monitoring radionuclides in an aquatic environment.
