Cumulative Deposition of $^{137}Cs$ in the Soil of Korea (한국토양에 존재하는 $^{137}Cs$ 방사능 분포)

  • The cumulative deposition of $^{137}Cs$ in the soil of Korea has been studied. Using ${\gamma$-ray spertrometry, the conrentrations of $^{137}Cs$ were determined for the soil samples collected to a depth of 20 cm. The average accumulated depositions of $^{137}Cs$ were estimated roughly to be 2,501 ${\pm}$ $m^{-2}$ in the forest and 1,058 ${\pm}$ 322 Bq $m^{-2}$ in the hill. The inventory value of $^{137}Cs$ in the forest is about two times higher than that in the hill. Except for some cases, the concentrations of $^{137}Cs$ in the undisturbed soils decreased exponentially with increasing the soil depth. The influences of rainfall, organic matter content, clay content and pH on the deposition of $^{137}Cs$ were studied using the field method. Among these factors, the organic matter content played the most important role in the retention and relative mobility of $^{137}Cs$ in the soil. The other factors such as rainfall, clay content and pH showed weak correlation with the deposition of $^{137}Cs$ in the soil.

Determination of Iodine Contents in Ten kinds of Frequently used Oriental Herb Medicinal Products for Cancer Patient (암환자에게 다빈도로 활용되는 한약제제 10종에 대한 요오드의 함량 분석)

  • Background and Objectives: Iodine is an essential constituent of the thyroid hormones associated with the growth and development of humans and animals as an inorganic nutrition. This element may be accumulated in human blood, tissues and body through the intake of foodstuffs, a beverage, a nutritional supplement and a medicine, among others. The aim of the research is to find out a better medicinal stuff for the thyroid cancer patient who required a low level of iodine diet. Methods: Neutron activation analysis (NAA) used for the iodine analysis is one of nuclear analytical techniques using radiation and radioisotopes and very useful as sensitive analytical technique for performing both qualitative and quantitative multi-elemental non-destructive analysis of major, minor and trace components in variety of environmental and biological materials. In this study, iodine contents in ten kinds of oriental herb medicinal products, which is frequently used to cancer patients are determined by using instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) at the HANARO research reactor. The samples prescribed are manufactured as powdered form for taking medicine easily. The analytical quality control is performed to assure an uncertainty of the measurement and to compensate the measured data using a biological certified reference material, NIST SRM 1572, Citrus Leaves. The measured value is $1.89{\pm}0.35mg/kg$, and the relative error is 2.88%, and relative standard deviation is 19 % due to high counting error by small counts of gamma ray spectrum. The standard deviations for other elements such as Cl, K, Mn and Na were in the range of 2 to 8%. Result: The level of iodine contents of Biki-huan, Chungryong-huan and Chungcho-huan, samples detected is less than 6 mg/kg except Hangam Plus sample (more than 210 mg/kg) and six samples were not detected. Iodine in the samples of Shoxiho-tang, Shopunghualhyl-tang, Shocungryong-tang, Banhasaxim-tang, Insampaedox-san and Myunyuk Plus were not measured, but possible level of content can be estimated from the detection limits. In addition, the concentrations of some major elements like Cl, K, Mn, Na, in the samples were determined with the detection limits. Conclusions: Most of samples showed low iodine contents of less than 6 mg/kg but it turned out that most of testing samples can be used to classify the level of iodine diet samples considering the recommended low level of iodine diet 50 ${\mu}g$/day, and a better medicinal stuff for the thyroid cancer patient can be found.

Comparative Study of Tritium Analysis Method with High-Volume Counting Vial

  • Background: Tritium (3H) analysis in groundwater was difficult because of its low activity. Therefore, the electrolytic enrichment method was used. To improve the detection limit and for performing simple analysis, a high-volume counting vial with the available liquid scintillation counter (LSC) was investigated. Further, it was compared with a conventional 20-mL counting vial. Materials and Methods: The LSC with the electrolytic enrichment method was used 3H analysis in groundwater. A high-volume 145-mL counting vial was compared with a conventional 20-mL counting vial to determine the counting characteristics of different LSCs. Results and Discussion: When a Quantulus LSC was used, the counting window between channels 35 and 250 was used. The background count was approximately 1.86 cpm, and the counting efficiency increased from 8% to 40% depending on the mixing ratio of the volume of sample and cocktail solution. For LSC-LB7, the optimum counting window was between 1 and 4.9 keV, which was selected by the factory (Hitachi Aloka Medical Ltd., Japan) by considering quenching using a standard external gamma source. The background count of LSC-LB7 was approximately 3.60 ± 0.29 cpm when the 145-mL vial was used and 2.22 ± 0.17 cpm when the 20-mL vial was used. The minimum detectable activity (MDA) of the 20-mL vial was greater for LSC-LB7 than for Quantulus. The MDA with the 145-mL vial was improved to 0.3 Bq/L when compared with the value of 1.6 Bq/L for the 20-mL vial. Conclusion: The counting efficiency when using the 145-mL vial was 27%, whereas it was 18% when using the 20-mL vial. This difference can be attributed to the vial volume. The figure of merit (FOM) of the 145-mL vial was four times greater than that of the 20-mL vial because the volume of the former vial is approximately seven times greater than that of the latter. Further, the MDA for 3H decreased from 1.6 to 0.3 Bq/L. The counting efficiency and FOM of LSC-LB7 was slightly less than those of Quantulus when the 20-mL vial was used. The background counting rate of the Quantulus was lower than that of the LSC-LB7.

Quality and Digestibility Characteristics of Rice Cake with Germinated Brown Waxy Rice (발아찰현미떡의 품질 및 소화특성)

  • Germinated brown rice (GBR) has received great attention due to its enhanced nutritional value. Brown waxy rice was germinated at $30^{\circ}C$ for 10 h, 20 h, or 30 h with 95% humidity. The color, texture, digestibility, and sensory characteristics of waxy rice cake made by GBR were evaluated. Pasting viscosity of rice flour was substantially reduced, whereas ${\gamma}$-amino butyric acid content increased with an increase in germination time. Lightness of rice cake with GBR was lower than that with brown rice, whereas the redness and yellowness of rice cake were higher after germination. For textural properties, the hardness, gumminess, and chewiness of rice cake with GBR were lower than those with brown rice, and decreased hardness was more prominent with an increase in germination time. The in vitro starch digestibility of rice cake was elevated by germination, showing an increase in rapidly digestible starch content and decrease in resistant starch content. In the sensory evaluation, the overall acceptability of rice cake with brown rice and GBR was greater than that with white rice, whereas it was reduced with an increase in germination time.

Changes of Physicochemical Properties According to the Shoot Length in Germinated Brown Rice (발아현미의 싹 길이에 따른 품질변화)

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate quality properties including amylose, alkali digestion value (ADV), texture and GABA (Gamma Amino-Butyric Acid) of brown rice and 1~5 mm germinated brown rice of Keunnun and Samkwang culitvars. The protein content of germinated brown rice showed increasing tendency according to shoot length, however, the difference was not statistically significant. The amylose content of all samples ranged from 15.0% to 16.0% in Keunnun and 17.0% to 18.0% in Samkwang, without significant differences. Compared to regular brown rice, germinated brown rice from both cultivars demonstrated reduced gel consistency, which contributed to the improved cooked rice texture. Especially, germinated brown rice had significantly lower setback values, which is correlated with high palatability of cooked rice. However, there was no significant difference in gel consistency between 1 mm and 2~5 mm germinated brown rice. GABA content in Keunnun increased by 3~5 times after germination process. In Samkwang, GABA content increased by 50 times (from $0.005{\mu}g/g$ to $0.243{\sim}0.247{\mu}g/g$) after germination. The hardness of germinated brown rice was significantly lower than that of brown rice. However, there was no significant difference in hardness according to shoot length. Consequently, when processing germinate brown rice, it is recommended to maximize functional ingredients by germination while maintaining shoot length less than 2 mm.

The Inhibition of Green Discoloration in Garlic by Conditioning (Conditioning에 의한 마늘의 녹변억제)

  • Garlic was stored at 4, 8, and $12^{\circ}C$ to investigate the development of green discoloration. Green discoloration developed after 7 day of storage ar $4^{\circ}C$, while it developed after 15 day of storage at 8 and $12^{\circ}C$. The effect of maleic hydrazide fertilization on green discoloration of garlic was not observed. Green discoloration of garlic was accelerated by gamma-radiation treatment. The addition of cysteine did not prevent green discoloration, which decreased the commercial value of the garlic due to the presence of white specks on the surface. When 3% ascorbic acid was added to the garlic, green discoloration developed in 6 and 24 hr at room temperature and $4^{\circ}C$, respectively. The tendency of garlic to discolor was also investigated at various storage temperatures. Discolored garlic stored for 30 day at low temperatures was conditioned at $20{\sim}45^{\circ}C$ for 20 day. The green discoloration of garlic conditioned at 20 and $25^{\circ}C$ did not disappear in 20 day, but disappeared in 20 day when conditioned at $30^{\circ}C$. The L, a, and b values of garlic conditioned at 35, 40, and $45^{\circ}C$ for 4 day were similar to those of normal garlic. Conclusively, our results indicated that the best method for suppressing green discoloration was conditioning discolored garlic at $35^{\circ}C$ for 4 day.

Effects of Frying Oils and Storage Conditions on the Rancidity of Yackwa (약과(藥菓)의 산패(酸敗)에 미치는 튀김기름 및 저장조건의 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the storage stability of Yackwa (a Korean fried cake made from wheat flour, honey and 20% oil), with the variation in frying oils (soybean oil of fresh or heat-treated corn oil and rapeseed oil) and storage conditions (temperature, humidity and in dark or under fluorescent light) for 20 weeks period. In $5^{\circ}C$ storage, acid and peroxide values increased slowly, showing the peroxide value of 20 meq/kg after 13 weeks. In $40^{\circ}C$ storage, acid and peroxide values increased remarkably. The product became harder at storage humidity of 25% and softer by moistening at storage humidity of 80%. Acid and peroxide values of Yackwa from corn, rapeseed and soybean oils increased with storage period, to a different extent. The values of fluorescent groups, especially rapeseed oil group, were higher than those of control groups and the heat-treated oil groups were higher than those of fresh oil groups. Sensory scores for rancid flavor were gradually increased with the storage period in all groups. There was no significant difference with the kinds of frying oils, storage conditions and heat treatment. Correlation of sensory scores with acid values was positive throughout whole storage period, with low ${\gamma}-values$. Its correlation with peroxide values was positive up to 6th week but negative at 9th week of storage.

Effects of Dietary Allium Hookeri on Growth and Blood Biochemical Parameters in Broiler Chickens (삼채의 급여가 육계의 성장 및 혈액 생화학 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary Allium hookeri on growth performance, bone strength, and blood biochemical profiles in growing broiler chickens. Twelve hundreds of one-day old Arbor Acres male broilers were divided into 6 treatments with 4 replicates and 50 birds per replicate (n=200 chicks/treatment). Chickens fed basal diet (Control), basal diet with commercial X (Positive control) at 0.05% of diet, or each one of the experimental diets (L3, L5, R3, R5) supplemented with the powder of A. hookeri leaf or root at 0.3 and 0.5% of diet respectively for 5 weeks. At the 5th week of feeding the diets, body weight, tibia strength, and blood biochemical profiles including antibody titers were measured. Dietary A. hookeri (L3, L5, R3, R5) significantly increased final body weight than the control group. And the dietary leaf of A. hookeri effectively increased the growth performance than dietary root of A. hookeri. Interestingly dietary leaf of A. hookeri improved tibia strength than the control group and L3 showed the highest value. The antibody titers against infectious bursal disease (IBD) increased with the addition of dietary leaf of A. hookeri compared with positive control, R3, and R5 groups. But there was no significant difference in serum biochemical parameters such as albumin, globulin, glucose, cholesterol, Ca, P, total protein, total bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, and gamma-glutamyl transferase. These results suggest that A. hookeri can be used as a good supplement to improve growth performance and health by increasing bone strength and antibody titer against IBD without any anti-nutritional or toxic effects in growing broilers.

Analysis of Left Ventricular Functional Parameters in Normal Korean Subjects by ECG Gated Blood Pool Scan (정상 한국인에서 게이트혈액풀스캔을 이용한 좌심실 심기능지표들의 분석)

  • Background : The demand for refinement in noninvasive and quantitative assessment of left ventricular (LV) function is increasing. Purpose : To assess normal values of left ventricular functional parameters during both systole and diastole by scintigraphic method using computerized triple-head gamma camera and to evaluate correlations between these parameters. Methods : ECG gated blood pool scan with $^{99m}Tc$-Human serum albumin was performed in 94 normal Korean subjects. Ejection fraction (EF), systolic parameters [peak emptying rate (PER), average emptying rate (AER), time to peak emptying rate (TPER)], and diastolic parameters [peak filling rate (PFR), average filling rate (AFR), time to peak filling rate (TPFR)] were obtained by analysis of LV time-activity curve, the correlation of these parameters to the age and sex, and the correlation between these parameters were evaluated. Results : 1) Mean value of ejection fraction in study subjects was $59.6{\pm}5.25%$ and showed no significant correlation to age (r=-0.08) and sex but showed most pronounced correlation to PFR (r=0.46, p<0.001), PER (r=0.41, p<0.001), AFR (r=0.34, p<0.001) and AER (r=0.28, p<0.01). 2) Mean values of systolic parameters were as follows: $PER=3.22{\pm}0.50$ end-diastolic volume/sec, $AER=2.22{\pm}0.45$ end-diastolic volume/sec, $TPER=103.5{\pm}29.30$ msec. They showed no significant correlation to age and sex. 3) Mean values of diastolic parameters were as follows: $PFR=2.71{\pm}0.51$ end-diastolic volume/sec, $AFR=1.83{\pm}0.44$ end-diastolic volume/sec, $TPFR=132.1{\pm}33.45$ msec. They showed strong correlation to age (r=0.70, -0.64, 0.37, p<0.001). Conclusions : Left ventricular functional parameters in normal Korean subjects were obtained reliably by computerized scintigraphic method and may be applied to the evaluation of cardiac function in diseased patients.

Serum fatty acids, biochemical indices and antioxidant status in goats fed canola oil and palm oil blend

  • Background: Dietary supplementation of unsaturated fats in ruminants, if not stabilized, can instigate oxidative stress which can have negative impact on production performance and enhance the susceptibility to various diseases. The current study examined the effect of dietary 80 % canola oil and 20 % palm oil blend (CPOB) on serum fatty acids, antioxidant profile and biochemical indices in goats. Thirty Boer bucks (4-5 months old; initial BW, $20.34{\pm}0.77kg$) were randomly assigned to diets containing 0, 4 or 8 % CPOB and fed daily for a period of 90 days. Blood was sampled from the goats on 0, 30, 60 and 90 days of the trial and the serum was analyzed for fatty acids, cholesterol, glucose, total protein, antioxidants and lipid oxidation. Results: Neither diet nor sampling time influenced serum TBARS value, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities, LDL cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose and total protein. Goats fed 4 and 8 % CPOB had higher (P < 0.05) total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol than the control goats on day 30, 60 and 90. The proportion of C15:0 decreased with increasing level of CPOB on day 30 and 60. Serum C18:1n-9 increased with increasing level of CPOB in diet on day 60. The proportion of C18:3n-3 and C22:5n-3 increased (P < 0.05), while the proportion of C18:2n-6 decreased (P < 0.05) with increase in the level of CPOB on day 60 and 90. Dietary CPOB did not affect serum total carotenoid and ${\delta}$-tocopherol but did increase (P < 0.05) ${\alpha}$ and ${\gamma}$-tocopherol. Conclusion: Dietary canola oil and palm oil blend could be supplemented in diets without instigating oxidative stress in goats.
