  • The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of children's perception of communications with mothers and self-control on game addiction. The subjects were 739 children of 4th, 5th and 6th grade. The subjects rated themselves on questionnaires regarding communications with mothers, self-control and game addiction scale. The major findings of this study were as follows: 1) 6th grade children addicted more than 4th and 5th grade children. And boys addicted more than girls. 2) Sex had a direct and indirect effect through children's perception of problematic communications with mothers and self-control on game addiction and was the first contribution factor Children's self-control had a first direct negative effect on game addiction. 3) Children's perception of problematic communications with mothers had a direct positive effect and an indirect positive effect through self-control on game addiction. Grade had a direct positive effect and an indirect positive effect through children's perception of open and problematic communications with mothers and self-control on game addiction. Children's perception of open communications with mothers had a direct positive effect and an indirect negative effect through self-control on game addiction.

  • The purpose of this study were to investigate 1) present condition of children's usage of computer game, 2) difference in extent of immersing in computer game according to grade, and 3) difference in extent of immersing in computer game according to conditions of computer game usage. A total of 239 children from 1st to 3rd grade in an elementary school in Busan were surveyed with two kinds of questionnaires about usage of and immersion in computer game. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0 program. It was revealed that the 1st graders showed higher scores on experience of computer game, frequency of computer game per week, and amount of time for each computer game than the 3rd graders. However, there were no significant differences in extent of immersing in computer game according to grade and to conditions of computer game usage. The findings of this study implies that the age of using computer game is going down rapidly. Discussions and suggestions for further study were provided.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors predicting internet game addiction in higher grade elementary schoolers according to gender. Methods: The participants were 898 elementary school students who were in 5th and 6th grade. Data were collected via a structured questionnaire from October 1 to November 20 2012 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, $x^2$ test and logistic regression with the SPSS/WIN 23.0 program. Results: The prevalence rate of internet game addiction group was 8.8% (boys 7.1%, girls 1.7%). In terms of gender difference, it was found that girls' stress coping behaviors were more passive than male students (t=-3.27, p=.001). In boys, variables that predicted internet game addiction were aggressive coping, active coping, internet gaming hours per day and academic achievements. In girls, variables that predicted internet game addiction were aggressive coping, close friends and academic achievements. Conclusion: The findings from this study indicate there is a need to develop positive stress-coping behaviors programs and prevent internet game addiction in higher grade elementary school students.

  • This study was aimed to assess the degree of addiction on computer games and find factors related to game addiction, health perception and health promoting behavior in elementary school students. A study subjects were 814 students in 5th and 6th grades at 4 elementary schools in a city and a county. The items in questionnaire was consisted of general characteristics, circumstances and habits related to utilization of computer and internet game playing, and degree of addiction, health perception and health promoting behavior. We analyzed data using chi-square test, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. In multiple regression analysis, addictiveness on internet game was significantly related to type of computer utilization, frequency and duration of internet game playing, gender, after-school activities, grade points, economical status, and location of computer in a house. Health perception was significantly related to addiction points, gender, residential area, and grade points. And health promoting behavior was significantly related to addiction points, grade level, grade points, and health perception points. Since health promoting behaviors of children in elementary school are in the way of making, their degree of addiction to computer games can greatly influence their attitude towards health and their future life pattern as adults. Therefore an educational prevention program including counselling on game addiction should be devised. And researches will be needed for developing the Korean standard for measuring degree of addiction and a prevention program for peer group's game addiction.

Based on literature review and analysis of counseling cases, the concept of the internet game addiction was defined. Items of the scale were developed and then the content validity of the scale was examined by 20 professionals. Then a preliminary survey of 188 3rd to 6th grade students was made, and the main survey of 699 3rd to 6th grade students throughout Korea. The main results are as follows; [I] Internet Game Addiction Scale consists of 3 factors with 20 items : game-oriented life(6 items), tolerance & mastery loss(7 items), and withdrawal & emotional experience(7 items); [II] appropriateness of item mean and standard deviation was proved, a 3-factor structure confirmed through factorial analysis and cross validation; [III] appropriateness of the scale confirmed through criterion validity and reliability.

  • Computer games must keep the user immersed for fun. According to the immersion theory, maintaining the user's immersive state requires a continuous balance of game skill level and game difficulty level This study proposes a game skill estimation method of 9th grade that can be applied to a casual action game that can assume a zero-sum game, and additionally proposed a difficulty guessing method. The proposed methods can be implemented quickly and easily because it is a method determining by conditional mathematical expressions. Experiments on the accuracy of the proposed methods for the customized Pac-Man game show that the accuracy of the skill level was 1.2 grade as the difference on the average and the accuracy of the game difficulty level was 1.81 grade the difference on the average. The results show that the proposed methods are accurate enough to be applied to casual action games satisfying the zero-sum condition.

  • The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and compare 'Game Activities' of elementary mathematics textbooks developed in the national curriculum revised in 2015, and to find suggestions to improve 'Game Activities' of the textbooks based on the results. The main results of this study are as follows. First, as for materials, various types of materials were used in 'Game Activities'. Also, more various materials were included in 2nd grade textbooks and 1st, 2nd grade teacher's guidebooks than 1st grade textbooks. Second, this study analyzed the patterns of organization. The result showed that group and pair activities accounted for the highest rate among other patterns of organizations. Textbooks should include more pattern types of organizations that teachers could use them properly according to numbers of students in classes. For the 'Game Activities', students need to understand basic concepts of the chapter first. Students with lower levels would have difficulty participating in the 'Game Activities'. Thus, there is a need to include activities for students with lower levels in teachers' guidebooks, reflecting a variety of students levels.
