  • Carbon Black has various advantageous properties such as reinforcement, tinting, weathering, chemical resistance, electrical resistance, etc., but it has poor affinity in the solution. The purpose of this study is to enhance dispersion in the aqueous solution by altering the surface characteristics. Two different treatments were applied for both channel black and furnace black respectively. Channel black was treated in alkaline solution to replace hydrogen of the carboxyl group with alkaline metal, Li, Na, K. Furnace black has few functional groups, and it was treated with $HNO_3$ to increase the number of functional group on carbon black. It was seen that the substitution of alkaline metal on the surface of channel black enhances the degree of dispersion. Also the higher the acid concentration and reaction temperature, the more the number of some functional groups on the furnace black. Reaction time was not seen to be effective.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the expansion of alkali-activated mortar based on ground granulated blast furnace slag containing reactive aggregate due to alkali-silica reaction. In addition, this study was particularly concerned with the behavior of these alkaline materials in the presence of reactive aggregates. The experimental program included expansion measurement of the mortar bar specimens, as well as the determination of the morphology and composition of the alkali-silica reaction products by using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), and energy dispersive x-ray(EDX). The experiment showed that while alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag mortars showed expansion due to the alkali-silica reaction, the expansion was 0.1% at Curing Day 14, showing that it is safe. After the accelerated test, SEM and BEM analysis showed the presence of alkali-silica gel and rim around the aggregate and cement paste. According to the EDX, the reaction products decreased markedly as alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag was used. In addition, for the substitutive materials of mineral admixture, a further study on improving the quality of alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag is needed to assure of the durability properties of concrete.

  • The effects of mineral admixtures on the bonding properties of cement mortar to polyolefin based synthetic fiber were evaluated. The mineral admixtures consisted of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% fly ash, blast furnace slag, and metakaolin in cement. Bond interactions between the cement mortar and the polyolefin based synthetic fiber were determined by Dog-bone bond tests. Bond tests of the polyolefin based synthetic fiber showed an increase in pullout load with the strength of the cement mortar. Also, the interface toughness of polyolefin based synthetic fiber in cement mortar increased as the fly ash, blast furnace slag, and metakaolin contents increased. The microstructure of polyolefin based synthetic fiber surface was examined after the pullout test to analyze the frictional resistant force according to the replacement ratio of fly ash, blast furnace slag, and metakaolin during the pullout process of polyolefin based synthetic fiber in cement mortar. The scratched of polyolefin based synthetic fibers increased with the replacement ratio of fly ash, blast furnace slag, and metakaolin. Also, the interface toughness was enhanced by adhesion forces induced by the fly ash, blast furnace slag, and metakaolin.

  • Portland cement production is under critical review due to high amount of $CO_2$ gas released to the atmosphere. Attempts to increase the utilization of a by-products such as fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag to partially replace the cement in concrete are gathering momentum. But most of by-products is currently dumped in landfills, thus creating a threat to the environment. Many researches on alkali-activated concrete that does not need the presence of cement as a binder have been carried out recently. In this study, we investigated the influence of alkali activator and superplasticizer on the flowability and compressive strength of the alkali-activated mortar in oder to develop cementless alkali-activated concrete using blast furnace slag. In view of the results, we found out that the type and mixture ratio of alkali activator, the type and adding order of superplasticizer results to be significant factors. When cementless alkali-activated mortar using blast furnace slag manufactured with 1:1 the mass ratio of 9M NaOH and sodium silicate, and added superplasticizer before alkali activator in the mixer, we can be secured workability with 180 mm of flow during 1 hours and compressive strength of about 50 MPa under $20^{\circ}C$ curing condition at age of 28days.

  • The amount of electric furnace dust has been steadily increasing due to the increase of iron scraps which are usually recycled by electric furnace melting process. To date, this electric furnace dust has usually been treated by landfilling, however, because of shortage of landfill sites and heavy metal leaching more desirable treatment schemes are urgently needed. Among several possible schemes for the proper treatment of electric furnace dust, its recycling can be said to be most desirable. In present study, the triboelectrostatic separation of zinc and zinc-containing components from electric furnace dust was attempted based on its physicochemical properties such as particle shape, size distribution, and chemical assay. The dust was found to be mixed with spherical and non-spherical shaped particles and its major component materials were $ZnFe_2$$O_4$, ZnO, Fe, Zn, and FeO. The content of zinc-containing components in the entire dust was observed to be in the range of 15~30 wt%, which reasonably justified that zinc is recyclable. The triboelectrostatic characteristic of each component material was found to be different each other since their work functions were different, and based on this characteristic zinc and zinc-containing component could be flirty separated from the dust. After selecting a proper tribo-elec-trification material, the separation features of zinc and zinc-containing component were examined by taking the distance of electrodes, electric field strength, and scavenging as the experimental variables. The highest zinc-content obtained under the optimal separating condition was found to be up to 50wt%.

  • Iron was one of the most influential factors for formation and development of ancient countries. The diffusion of ironware had increased agricultural productivity and brought about military technical revolution. Needless to say, the rise and fall of the countries depended on the possession of stable iron production. Raw materials and fuels are the key factors for mass production of iron and a transportation route is essential to supply the goods. Jungwon area satisfies the three factors. There are many iron manufacture sites such as Jincheon Seokjang-ri Gusan-ri, and Chunju Chilgeum-dong Tangeumdae earthen ramparts in the Jungwon area. In order to study the ancient iron manufacture technique, reconstitution experiment was carried out using restored furnace which was made based on the Jincheon Seokjang-ri B-23 furnace. Some notable results were identified with the experiment as in the followings. Firstly, a roasting process has a connection with the decrease of hardness of the iron ore. Secondly, melting of the blast pipe as well as the formation of product within the furnace had a crucial effect on the cessation of the experiment. Thirdly, reduced iron in various locations within the furnace prove that there was enough reducing environment during the working. Not only melting point but also properties of iron can vary depending on the carbon contents. For the reason, formation of approximate environment in which iron can react to the chalcoal is the most important factor in terms of iron manufacture.

  • Phase change material(PCM) has the capacity to absorb or release energy in heat when the phase changes. This study conducted to investigate the effect of strontium-based PCM on the hydration heat and mechanical properties of mortar with fly ash and blast furnace slag. The amounts of PCM were 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% by the cementitious materials weight. The tests about mortar flow, semi-adiabatic temperature rise, compressive and flexural strength tests were carried out for twelve types of mortar mixtures. The test results indicated that the use of PCM was effective to reduce hydration heat and retard hydration of mortar with industrial by-products. In particular, the heat generation rate of mortars with fly ash was lower than that of mortars with blast furnace slag. The compressive strength of mortar with fly ash and blast furnace slag were decreased with increasing PCM ratio.

  • This study investigated the self-healing properties of blast furnace slag cement paste sample with $Na_2SO_4$ as a blast furnace slag activator after conducting the permeability test. Self-healing properties were examined by crack filling ratio and quantification of self-healing products. The degree of self-healing was evaluated by the crack filling ratio, and the crack filling ratio was analyzed by panoramic analysis using BSE-DIP for objectivity. The average crack filling ratio showed a tendency of decreasing from the upper part of the specimen to the lower part as the average of the top part was 18%, the middle part was 7% and the bottom part was 5% on average. The maximum crack filling ratio was 44% and the minimum crack filling ratio was 3%. The residual self-healing product after the permeability test contained a large amount of Ca element and Al element derived from the blast furnace slag, and the Si element was mainly present near the crack surface. The most abundant minerals in self-healing products were about 68% C-A-H. $CaCO_3$ was about 13% and C-A-S-H was about 8%. Three minerals accounted for 90% of self-healing products. C-A-H was mainly present at a part slightly distant from the crack surface and showed an angular or acicular shape. The C-A-S-H was generated on the surface naturally connected to the existing specimen, and the $CaCO_3$ was generally observed on the surface of the specimen or the inside of the crack.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the improvement of flow, compressive and flexural strengths of polymer cement mortar(PCM) using SBR latex mixed with blast-furnace slag and fly ash. The test specimens were prepared with SBR polymer dispersion, two types of admixture (blast-furnace slag and fly ash), five polymer-cement ratios (P/C; 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20%), and six admixture contents (0, 3, 5, 10, 15 and 20%), plain cement mortar was also made for comparison. From the test results, the flow of PCM was significantly improved compared to ordinary cement mortar, but the flow was slightly reduced when mixed with blast-furnace slag, and the flow was similar to PCM when mixed with fly ash. In addition, the compressive strength of PCM mixed with admixtures was significantly improved, but the flexural strength did not improve except for some mortars. It can be stated that the optimum mix proportions of PCM using SBR with admixture contents 10 to 15% and P/C 10% for the compressive strength improvement, and P/C 20% for flexural strength improvement are recommended respectively in this study.

  • Grouting is used for reinforcement and waterproofing of soft ground to increase its bearing capacity, reduce the impacts of rising or lowering groundwater levels, and reduce subsidence due to vibration and general causes. This study investigated the enhancement of grout strength and hardening time by the addition of reinforcing fibers, and the development of non-cement grouting materials from blast furnace slag. An experiment was performed to measure the increase in grout strength resulting from the addition of 0.5% increments of aramid and carbon reinforcing fibers. The results show that the uniaxial compressive strength of grout increases with increasing content of reinforcing fiber. Comparison of three admixtures of finely powdered blast furnace slag and 10%, 20%, and 30% calcium hydroxide stimulating agent showed that the uniaxial compressive strength of the mixture increases with increasing content of alkaline stimulant; however, the strength was lower than for 100% pure cement. The reaction of calcium hydroxide with blast furnace slag powder, which increases the strength of the grout, is more effective if injected as a solution rather than a powder.
