  • Structural collapses can occur as a result of a dynamic amplification of either, the building's seismic response or the ground shaking by local site effects; one of the reasons is a resonance effect due to the proximity of the structural elastic fundamental period TE and the soil fundamental period TS. We evaluate the vulnerability to resonance effects in Guadalajara, México, in a three-step schema: 1) we define structural systems in the building environment of western Guadalajara, in terms of their construction materials and structural components; 2) we estimate TE with different equations, to obtain a representative value in elastic conditions for each structural system; and, 3) we evaluate the resonance vulnerability by the analysis of the ratio between TE and TS. We observe that the larger the soil fundamental period, the higher the resonance vulnerability for buildings with height between 17 and 39 m. For the sites with a low TS, the most vulnerable buildings will be those with a height between 2 and 9 m. These results can be a helpful tool for disaster prevention, by avoiding the construction of buildings with certain heights and structural characteristics that would result in a dangerous proximity between TE and TS.

  • Analytical probabilistic vulnerability analysis requires extensive computing effort as a result of the randomness in both input motion and response characteristics. In this study, a new methodology whereby a set of vulnerability curves are derived based on the fundamental response quantities of stiffness, strength and ductility is presented. A response database of coefficients describing lognormal vulnerability relationships is constructed by employing aclosed-form solution for a generalized single-degree-of-freedom system. Once the three fundamental quantities of a wide range of structural systems are defined, the vulnerability curves for various limit states can be derived without recourse to further simulation. Examples of application are given and demonstrate the extreme efficiency of the proposed approach in deriving vulnerability relationships.

  • Recently in the field of IT, cloud computing technology has been deployed rapidly in the current society because of its flexibility, efficiency and cost savings features. However, cloud computing system has a big problem of vulnerability in security. In order to solve the vulnerability of cloud computing systems security in this study, impact types of virtual machine about the vulnerability were determined and the priorities were determined according to the risk evaluation of virtual machine's vulnerability. For analyzing the vulnerability, risk measurement standards about the vulnerability were defined based on CVSS2.0, which is an open frame work; and the risk measurement was systematized by scoring for relevant vulnerabilities. Vulnerability risk standards are considered to suggest fundamental characteristics of vulnerability and to provide the degree of risks and consequently to be applicable to technical guides to minimize the vulnerability. Additionally, suggested risk standard of vulnerability is meaningful as the study content itself and could be used in technology policy project which is to be conducted in the future.

  • In the catheterization laboratory, the measurement of physiological indexes can help identify functionally significant lesions and has become one of the standard methods to guide treatment decision-making. Plaque vulnerability refers to a coronary plaque susceptible to rupture, enabling risk prediction before coronary events, and it can be detected by defining a certain type of plaque morphology on coronary imaging modalities. Although coronary physiology and plaque vulnerability have been considered different attributes of coronary artery disease, the underlying pathophysiological basis and clinical data indicate a strong correlation between coronary hemodynamic properties and vulnerable plaque. In prediction of coronary events, emerging data have suggested independent and additional implications of a physiology-based approach to a plaque-based approach. This review covers the fundamental interplay between coronary physiology and plaque morphology during disease progression with clinical data supporting this relationship and examines the clinical relevance of physiological indexes in prediction of clinical outcomes and therapeutic decision-making along with plaque vulnerability.

  • The specific characteristics of near-field earthquake records can lead to different dynamic responses of bridges compared to far-field records. However, the effect of near-field strong ground motion has often been neglected in the seismic performance assessment of the bridges. Furthermore, damage to horizontally curved multi-frame RC box-girder bridges in the past earthquakes has intensified the potential of seismic vulnerability of these structures due to their distinctive dynamic behavior. Based on the nonlinear time history analyses in OpenSEES, this article, assesses the effects of near-field versus far-field earthquakes on the seismic performance of horizontally curved multi-frame RC box-girder bridges by accounting the vertical component of the earthquake records. Analytical seismic fragility curves have been derived thru considering uncertainties in the earthquake records, material and geometric properties of bridges. The findings indicate that near-field effects reasonably increase the seismic vulnerability in this bridge sub-class. The results pave the way for future regional risk assessments regarding the importance of either including or excluding near-field effects on the seismic performance of horizontally curved bridges.

  • In Korea, there exist many mountains, and sudden storms occur during the summer season. When severe rainstorm events occur in steep slope topography, risk of debris flow is increased. Once debris flow occurs in urban area, it may cause casualties and physical damages due to rapid debris flow velocity along a steep slope. Accordingly, preventing method of sediment-related disaster for demage mitigation are essential. Recently, various studies on debris flow have been conducted. However, the prediction of the physical propagation of debris flow along the steep slope was not thoroughly investigated. Debris flow is characterized by various factors such as topography, properties of debris flow, amount of debris flow. In the study the numerical simulation was focused on the topographic factor. Fundamental analysis of the risk area was implemented with emphasis on the propagation length, thickness, and the development of maximum velocity. The proposed results and the methodology of estimating the structural vulnerability would be helpful in predicting the behavior and the risk assessment of debris flow in urban area. These results will be able to estimate the vulnerability of urban areas affected the most damage by debris flow.

  • Ancient masonry towers constitute a relevant part of the cultural heritage of humanity. Their earthquake protection is a topic of great concern among researchers due to the strong damage suffered by these brittle and massive structures through the history. The identification of the seismic behavior and failure of towers under seismic loading is complex. This strongly depends on many factors such as soil characteristics, geometry, mechanical properties of masonry and heavy mass, as well as the earthquake frequency content. A deep understanding of these aspects is the key for the correct seismic vulnerability evaluation of towers and to design the most suitable retrofitting measure. Recent tendencies on the seismic retrofitting of historical structures by means of prestressing are related to the use of smart materials. The most famous cases of application of prestressing in towers were discussed. Compared to horizontal prestressing, vertical post-tensioning is aimed at improving the seismic behavior of towers by reducing damage with the application of an overall distribution of compressive stresses at key locations.

  • The information security industry has seen a wide variety of growth over the past few decades. In particular, various solutions have been proposed in terms of technology, management, and institutional aspects. Nevertheless, it should be notedthat security accidents continue to occur every year. This proves that there are limitations to various business changes in the digital era as existing security is being promoted with technology-oriented and prevention-oriented policies. Thus, people-centric security (PCS) has recently become a hot topic in order to escape the limitations of traditional securityapproaches. Through the concept of information security violations, PCS strategic principles, and expert interviews, this studyaims to present a fundamental security incident response plan by classifying human-caused vulnerabilities into 5 categories and classifying them into 21 detailed components.

  • Due to susceptibility of bridges in the past earthquakes, vulnerability assessment and strengthening of bridges has gained a particular significance. The objective of the present study is to employ an analytical method for the development of fragility curves, as well as to investigate the effect of strengthening on the RC box-girder bridges. Since fragility curves are used for pre-and post-earthquake planning, this paper has attempted to adopt the most reliable modeling assumptions in order to increase the reliability. Furthermore, to acknowledge the interaction of soil, abutment and pile, the effect of different strengthening methods, such as using steel jacketing and FRP layers, the effect of increase in the bridge pier diameter, and the effect of vertical component of earthquake on the vulnerability of bridges in this study, a three-span RC box-girder bridge was modeled in 9 different cases. Nonlinear dynamic analyses were carried out on the studied bridges subjected to 100 ground motion records via OpenSEES platform. Therefore, the fragility curves were plotted and compared in the four damage states. The results revealed that once the interaction of soil and abutment and the vertical component of the earthquake are accounted for in the calculations, the median fragility is reduced, implying that the bridge becomes more vulnerable. It was also confirmed that steel jackets and FRP layers are suitable methods for pier strengthening which reduces the vulnerability of the bridge.
