V-notched elements under mode II loading conditions

  • We apply the Finite Fracture Mechanics criterion to address the problem of a V-notched structure subjected to mode II loading, i.e., we provide a way to determine the direction and the load at which a crack propagates from the notch tip and express the critical conditions in terms of the generalized stress intensity factor. Weight functions for V-notch emanated cracks available in the literature allow us to implement the fracture criterion proposed in an almost completely analytical manner: the determination of the critical load and the direction of crack growth is reduced to a stationary point problem. A comparison with experimental data presented in the Literature concludes the paper.

Analytical solutions for skewed thick plates subjected to transverse loading

  • This paper presents analytical solutions for skewed thick plates under transverse loading that have previously been unreported in the literature. The thick plate solution is obtained in a framework of an oblique coordinate system. The governing equation is first derived in the oblique coordinate system, and the solution is obtained using deflection and rotation as partial derivatives of a potential function developed in this research. The solution technique is applied to three illustrative application examples, and the results are compared with numerical solutions in the literature and those derived from the commercial finite element analysis package ANSYS 11. These results are in excellent agreement. The present solution may also be used to model skewed structures such as skewed bridges, to facilitate efficient routine design or evaluation analyses, and to form special elements for finite element analysis. At the same time, the analytical solution developed in this research could be used to develop methods to address post-buckling and dynamic problems.

Development of educational software for beam loading analysis using pen-based user interfaces

  • Most engineering software tools use typical menu-based user interfaces, and they may not be suitable for learning tools because the solution processes are hidden and students can only see the results. An educational tool for simple beam analyses is developed using a pen-based user interface with a computer so students can write and sketch by hand. The geometry of beam sections is sketched, and a shape matching technique is used to recognize the sketch. Various beam loads are added by sketching gestures or writing singularity functions. Students sketch the distributions of the loadings by sketching the graphs, and they are automatically checked and the system provides aids in grading the graphs. Students receive interactive graphical feedback for better learning experiences while they are working on solving the problems.

  • In this paper, an integrated planning system is introduced for the efficient operation of container terminal. It consists of discharging and loading planning, yard planning, and berth scheduling subsystem. This interface of this system is considered for user's convenience, and the rule-based system is suggested and developed in order to make planning with automatic procedures, warning functions for errors.

Spline function solution for the ultimate strength of member structures

  • In this paper a spline function solution for the ultimate strength of steel members and member structures is derived based on total Lagrangian formulation. The displacements of members along longitudinal and transverse directions are interpolated by one-order B spline functions and three-order hybrid spline functions respectively. Equilibrium equations are established according to the principle of virtual work. All initial imperfections of members and effects of loading, unloading and reloading of material are taken into account. The influence of the instability of members on structural behavior can be included in analyses. Numerical examples show that the method of this paper can satisfactorily analyze the elasto-plastic large deflection problems of planar steel member and member structures.

  • In spite of recent advances in ballasted railway track, the correct choice of ballast for rail track is still considered critical because aggregates progressively deteriorate under traffic loading and environmental exposures. Various ballast requirements, functions and duties have been defined by researchers, railway companies and countries' regulations even though it needs to be integrated to make following proper decision during track operation and maintenance. A proper understanding of ballast properties and suitable tests are prerequisites for minimizing maintenance costs. This paper presents a capable classification for ballast characteristics which need to be investigated beforehand to such a way, firstly to assign ballast functions, secondly need to clarify ballast requirements, thirdly to map appropriate tests to evaluate ballast characteristics and then it must be such that if ballast cannot carry out one of these duties, be able to call there is ballast defect. The paper is structured in order to achieve these objectives.

  • In order to understand the flow and filtration characteristics in a wall-flow type DPF(Diesel Particulate Filter), 0-D, 1-D, and 3-D simulations are preformed. In this paper, three model are explained and validated with each other. Based on the comparisons with 1-D and 3-D results for the steady state solution, 3-D CFD analysis is preferable to 1-D for the prediction of wall velocity at the inlet and exit plane. Because PM loading process is transient state phenomena, the combination of full 3-D and time dependent simulation is crucial for the configuration of wall channels.   • Stress analysis of axi-symetric body with non-symetric loading and non-symetric given displacements is investigated in this paper using the finite element method. As the non-symetric load and non-symetric given displacements of axi-symetric body are generally periodic functions of angle .theta., the nodal forces and nodal displacements can be expanded in cosine and sine series, that is, Fourier series. Furthermore, using Euler's formula, the cosine and sine series can be converted into exponential series and it is prooved that the related calculus become more clear. Substituting the nodal displacements expanded in Fourier series into the strain components of cylindrical coordinates system, the element strains are expressed in series form and by the principal of virtual work, the element stiffness martix and element load vector are obtained for each order. It is also showed that if the non-symetric loads are even or odd functions of angle ${\theta}$ the stiffness matrix and load vector of the system are composed with only real numbers and relatively small capacity fo computer memory is enough for calculation.

A functionally graded magneto-thermoelastic half space with memory-dependent derivatives heat transfer

  • In this work, the model of magneto-thermoelasticity based on memory-dependent derivative (MDD) is applied to a one-dimensional thermal shock problem for a functionally graded half-space whose surface is assumed to be traction free and subjected to an arbitrary thermal loading. The $Lam{\acute{e}}^{\prime}s$ modulii are taken as functions of the vertical distance from the surface of thermoelastic perfect conducting medium in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. Laplace transform and the perturbation techniques are used to derive the solution in the Laplace transform domain. A numerical method is employed for the inversion of the Laplace transforms. The effects of the time-delay on the temperature, stress and displacement distribution for different linear forms of Kernel functions are discussed. Numerical results are represented graphically and discussed.

  • In this paper, the weight functions for the Mode I and Mode II in SEN(single edge notched) specimen are obtained by superposition of the displacement in the singular field of the Buckner type and the displacements by opposite tractions induced by the singular field. The stress intensity factors, $K_{I}$ and $K_{II}$ are calculated by the weight function theory in SEN specimen under the loading equivalent to uniform tension and shear at infinity in Griffith crack. And the results are compared with the exact solutions.s.
