In this paper, bending-stretching analysis of thick functionally graded piezoelectric rectangular plates is studied using the higher-order shear and normal deformable plate theory. On the basis of this theory, Legendre polynomials are used for approximating the components of displacement field. Also, the effects of both normal and shear deformations are encountered in the theory. The governing equations are derived using the principle of virtual work and variational approach. It is assumed that plate is made of piezoelectric materials with functionally graded distribution of material properties. Hence, exponential function is used to modify mechanical and electrical properties through the thickness of the plate. Finally, the effect of material properties, electrical boundary conditions and dimensions are investigated on the static response of plate. Also, it is shown that results of the presented model are close to the three dimensional elasticity solutions.
A new first-order shear deformation theory is developed for dynamic behavior of functionally graded beams. The equations governing the axial and transverse deformations of functionally graded plates are derived based on the present first-order shear deformation plate theory and the physical neutral surface concept. There is no stretching-bending coupling effect in the neutral surface based formulation, and consequently, the governing equations and boundary conditions of functionally graded beams based on neutral surface have the simple forms as those of isotropic plates. The accuracy of the present solutions is verified by comparing the obtained results with the existing solutions.
Several classical and higher order plate theories were used to study the buckling of functionally graded material (FGM) plates. In the great majority of research, a power function is used to represent metal and ceramic material transverse distribution (P-FGM). Therefore, the effect of having other transverse variation of material properties on the buckling behavior of thick rectangular FGM plates was not properly addressed. In the present work, this effect is investigated using the Third order Shear Deformable Theory (TSDT) for the case of simply supported FGM plate. Both a sigmoid function and an exponential functions are used to represent the transverse gradual property variation. The plate governing equations are combined with a Navier type expanded solution of the unknown displacements to derive the buckling equation in terms of the pre-buckling in-plane loads. Finally, the critical in-plane load is calculated for the different buckling modes. The model is verified by a comparison of the calculated buckling loads with available published results of Al-SiC P-FGM plates. The conducted parametric study shows that manufacturing FGM plates with sigmoid variation of properties in the thickness direction increases the buckling load considerably. This improvement is found to be more significant for the case of thick plates than that of thin plates. Results also show that this stiffening-like effect of the sigmoid function profile is more evident for cases where the in-plane loads are applied along the shorter edge of the plate.
The main objective of this paper is to compute the far-field acoustic radiation (sound radiation) of functionally graded plates (FGM) loaded by sinusoidally varying point load subjected to the arbitrary boundary condition is carried out. The governing differential equations for thin functionally graded plates (FGM) are derived using classical plate theory (CPT) and Rayleigh integral using the elemental radiator approach. Four cases, segregated on power-law index k=0,1,5,10, are studied. A novel approach is illustrated to compute sound fields of vibrating FGM plates using the physical neutral surface with an elemental radiator approach. The material properties of the FGM plate for all cases are calculated considering the power law indexes. An in-house MATLAB code is written to compute the natural frequencies, normal surface velocities, and sound radiation fields are analytically calculated using semi-analytical formulation. Ansys is used to validate the computed sound power level. The parametric effects of the power law index, modulus ratios, different constituent of FGM plates, boundary conditions, damping loss factor on the sound power level, and radiation efficiency is illustrated. This work is the benchmark approach that clearly explains how to calculate acoustic fields using a solid layered FGM model in ANSYS ACT. It shows that it is possible to asymptotically stabilize the structure by controlling the intermittent layers' stiffness. It is found that sound fields radiated by the elemental radiators approach in MATLAB, ANSYS and literatures are in good agreement. The main novelty of this research is that the FGM plate is analyzed in the low-frequency range, where the stiffness-controlled region governs the whole analysis. It is concluded that a clamped mono-ceramic FGM plate radiates a lesser sound power level and higher radiation efficiency than a mono-metallic or metal-rich FGM plate due to higher stiffness. It is found that change in damping loss factor does not affect the same constituents of FGM plates but has significant effects on the different constituents of FGM plates.
This research investigates the free vibration analysis of advanced composite plates such as functionally graded plates (FGPs) resting on a two-parameter elastic foundations using a hybrid quasi-3D (trigonometric as well as polynomial) higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). This present theory, which does not require shear correction factor, accounts for shear deformation and thickness stretching effects by a sinusoidal and parabolic variation of all displacements across the thickness. Governing equations of motion for FGM plates are derived from Hamilton's principle. The closed form solutions are obtained by using Navier technique, and natural frequencies are found, for simply supported plates, by solving the results of eigenvalue problems. The accuracy of the present method is verified by comparing the obtained results with First-order shear deformation theory, and other predicted by quasi-3D higher-order shear deformation theories. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is efficient and simple in predicting the natural frequencies of functionally graded plates on elastic foundations.
A simple hyperbolic shear deformation theory taking into account transverse shear deformation effects is proposed for the free flexural vibration analysis of thick functionally graded plates resting on elastic foundations. By considering further supposition, the present formulation introduces only four unknowns and its governing equations are therefore reduced. Hamilton's principle is employed to obtain equations of motion and Navier-type analytical solutions for simply-supported plates are compared with the available solutions in literature to check the accuracy of the proposed theory. Numerical results are computed to examine the effects of the power-law index and side-to-thickness ratio on the natural frequencies.

Optimal design of functionally graded plates is investigated considering stress and critical temperature. Material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent and varied continuously in the thickness direction. The effective material properties are obtained by applying linear rule of mixtures. The 3-D finite element model is adopted using an 18-node solid element to analyze more accurately the variation of material properties and temperature field in the thickness direction. For stress analysis, the tensile stress ratio and compressive stress ratio of the structure under mechanical load are investigated. In the thermo-mechanical buckling analysis, temperature at each node is obtained by solving the steady-state heat transfer problem and Newton-Raphson method is used for material nonlinear analysis. Finally, the optimal design of FGM plates is studied for stress reduction and improving thermo-mechanical buckling behavior, simultaneously.
In this article, a four-variable refined plate theory is presented for buckling analysis of functionally graded plates subjected to uniform, linear and non-linear temperature rises across the thickness direction. The theory accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains, and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factor. Young's modulus and Poisson ratio of the FGM plates are assumed to remain constant throughout the entire plate. However, the coefficient of thermal expansion of the FGM plate varies according to a power law form through the thickness coordinate. Equilibrium and stability equations are derived based on the present theory. The influences of many plate parameters on buckling temperature difference such ratio of thermal expansion, aspect ratio, side-to-thickness ratio and gradient index will be investigated.
In this research work, nonlinear thermal buckling behavior of functionally graded (FG) plates is explored based a new higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). The present model has just four unknowns, by using a new supposition of the displacement field which enforces undetermined integral variables. A shear correction factor is, thus, not necessary. A power law distribution is employed to express the disparity of volume fraction of material distributions. Three kinds of thermal loading, namely, uniform, linear, and nonlinear and temperature rises over z-axis direction are examined. The non-linear governing equations are resolved for plates subjected to simply supported boundary conditions at the edges. The results are approved with those existing in the literature. Impacts of various parameters such as aspect and thickness ratios, gradient index, type of thermal load rising, on the non-dimensional thermal buckling load are all examined.
Functionally graded materials (FGMs) have been spotlighted as an advanced composite material, accordingly the intensive studies have focused on FGMs to examine their mechanical behaviors. Among them is thermal buckling which has been a challenging subject, because its behavior is connected directly to the safety of structural system. In this context, this paper presents the numerical analysis of thermal buckling of metal-ceramic functionally graded (FG) plates. For an accurate and effective buckling analysis, a new numerical method is developed by making use of (1,1,0) hierarchical model and 2-D natural element method (NEM). Based on 3-D elasticity theory, the displacement field is expressed by a product of 1-D assumed thickness monomials and 2-D in-plane functions which are approximated by NEM. The numerical method is compared with the reference solutions through the benchmark test, from which its numerical accuracy has been verified. Using the developed numerical method, the critical buckling temperatures of metal-ceramic FG plates are parametrically investigated with respect to the major design parameters.
