A numerical analysis was done for a tunnel fire in a 1000m road tunnel. A cartesian coordinate was adopted to make a computational grid sytem which has 448,000 computational cells. A transient flow phenomena in the tunnel was simulated by the commercial code of PHEONICS from the ignition of fire to 600 seconds by the interval of 100 seconds. Total computational time of about 44 hours was required to get a convered solution in each time step. The purpose of this research is to analyze of the backlayering pheonomena and recirculation flow in a tunnel. The compuational results say that the backlayering does not happens near the fire of vehicle in this case because the vehicle fire is located at the outside of recirculation zone of flow ocuured near the jet fan. In this research, onset of backlayering pheonomena could be escaped if jet fan is set 95m in front of the the fire of vehicle.

In this paper, the method to miniaturize the radiating element of a VHF-band active electronically scanned array is proposed. The length of the proposed dipole having trapezoidal shape structure is miniaturized using meander line while the performance degradation is minimized. The grid reflector is used to improve the antenna directivity and insensitivity due to the outer environment. In addition, the antenna is designed to take into account for array application. The fabricated antenna has a 9.1 % fractional bandwidth for the voltage standing wave ratio(VSWR) 2:1 and the maximum gain of 4.24 dBi. The front-to-back ratio(FBR) is larger than 15 dB.

Unstructured adaptive grid flow simulation is applied to the calculation of high speed compressible flow of inert and reactive gas mixtures. Computational results are presented for the case of premixed hydrogen-air supersonic flow over a 2-D wedge. In such a configuration, combustion may be triggered behind the oblique shock wave and transition to an oblique detonation wave is eventually obtained. It is shown that the solution adaptive procedure implemented is able to correctly define the important wave front.
Elitist nondominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is adopted and improved for multiobjective optimal reactive power flow (ORPF) problem. Multiobjective ORPF, formulated as a multiobjective mixed integer nonlinear optimization problem, minimizes real power loss and improves voltage profile of power grid by determining reactive power control variables. NSGA-II-based ORPF is tested on standard IEEE 30-bus test system and compared with four other state-of-the-art multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs). Pareto front and outer solutions achieved by the five MOEAs are analyzed and compared. NSGA-II obtains the best control strategy for ORPF, but it suffers from the lower convergence speed at the early stage of the optimization. Several problem-specific local search strategies (LSSs) are incorporated into NSGA-II to promote algorithm's exploiting capability and then to speed up its convergence. This enhanced version of NSGA-II (ENSGA) is examined on IEEE 30 system. Experimental results show that the use of LSSs clearly improved the performance of NSGA-II. ENSGA shows the best search efficiency and is proved to be one of the efficient potential candidates in solving reactive power optimization in the real-time operation systems.

This paper presents a simple and cost-effective stand-alone rapid battery charging system of 30kW for electric vehicles. The proposed system mainly consists of active front-end rectifier of neutral point clamped 3-level type and non-isolated bi-directional dc-dc converter of multi-phase interleaved half-bridge topology. The charging system is designed to operate for both lithium-polymer and lithium-ion batteries. The complete charging sequence is made up of three sub-interval operating modes; pre-charging mode, constant-current mode, and constant-voltage mode. Each mode is operated according to battery states: voltage, current and State of Charging (SOC). The proposed system is able to reach the full-charge state within less than 16min for the battery capacity of 8kWh by supplying the charging current of 67A. The optimal discharging algorithm for Vehicle to the Grid (V2G) operation has been adopted to maintain the discharging current of 1C. Owing to the simple and compact power conversion scheme, the proposed solution has superior module-friendly mechanical structure which is absolutely required to realize flexible power expansion capability in a very high-current rapid charging system. Experiment waveforms confirm the proposed functionality of the charging system.

Implemented at the Geochang Observatory in South Korea, our slope detection and ranging (SLO-DAR) system features a 508 mm Cassegrain telescope (f /7.8), incorporating two Shack-Hartmann wave-front sensors (WFS) for precise measurements of atmospheric phase distortions, particularly from nearby binary or double stars, utilizing an 8 × 8 grid of sampling points. With an ability to reconstruct eight-layer vertical atmospheric profiles, the system quantifies the refractive index structure function (Cn2) through the crossed-beam method. Adaptable in vertical profiling altitude, ranging from a few hundred meters to several kilometers, contingent on the separation angle of binary stars, the system operates in both wide (2.5 to 12.5 arcminute separation angle) and narrow modes (11 to 15 arcsecond separation angle), covering altitudes from 122.3 to 611.5 meters and 6.1 to 8.3 kilometers, respectively. Initial measurements at the Geochang Observatory indicated Cn2 values up to 181.7 meters with a Fried parameter (r0) of 8.4 centimeters in wide mode and up to 7.8 kilometers with an r0 of 8.0 centimeters in narrow mode, suggesting similar seeing conditions to the Bohyun Observatory and aligning with a comparable 2014-2015 seeing profiling campaign in South Korea.

The tidal creek dependent mass transport characteristic in Gyeong-Gi Bay (west coast of Korea) was studied using field measured data and numerical model. Gyeong-Gi Bay consists of 3 main tidal channels and contains a well-developed vast tidal flat. This region is famous for its large tidal difference and strong current. We aim to study the effect of tidal creek in the tidal flat on the mass exchange between the estuary and the ocean. For numerical application, the application of unstructured grid feature is essential, since the tidal creek has complicated shape and form. For this purpose, the FVCOM is applied to the study area and simulation is performed for 2 different cases. In case A, geographic characteristics of the tidal creek is ignored in the numerical grid and in case B, the tidal creek are constructed using unstructured grid. And these 2 cases are compared with the field measured cross-channel mass transport data. The cross-channel mass transport at the Yeomha waterway mouth and Incheon harbor was measured in June, 9~10 (Spring tide) and 17~18 (Neap tide), 2009. CTD casting and ADCP cross-channel transect was conducted 13 times in one tidal cycle. The observation data analysis results showed that mass transport has characteristic of the ebb dominance Line 1 (Yeomha waterway mouth), on the other hand, a flood dominant characteristic is shown in Line 2 (Incheon harbor front). By comparing the numerical model (case A & B) with observation data, we found that the case B results show much better agreement with measurement data than case A. It is showed that the geographic feature of tidal creek should be considered in grid design of numerical model in order to understand the mass transport characteristics over large tidal flat area.
Numerical simulations of free surface flow over a broad-crested rectangular weir are conducted by using the volume of fraction (VOF) method and three different turbulence models, the k-${\varepsilon}$, RNG k-${\omega}$ and k-${\omega}$ SST models. The governing equations are solved by a second-order accurate finite volume method and the grid sensitivity study of solutions is carried out. The numerical results are evaluated by comparing the solutions with experimental and numerical results of Kirkgoz et al. (2008) and some non-dimensionalized experimental results obtained by Moss (1972) and Zachoval et al. (2012). The results show that the present numerical model can reasonably reproduce the experimental results, while three turbulent models yield different numerical predictions of two distinct zones of flow separation, the first zone is in front of the upstream edge of the weir and the second is created immediately behind the upstream edge of the weir where the flow is separated to form the separation bubble. The standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model appears to significantly underestimate the size of both separation zones and the k-${\omega}$ SST model slightly over-estimates the first separation zone in front of the weir. The RNG k-${\varepsilon}$ model predicts both separation zones in overall good agreement with the experimental measurement, while the k-${\omega}$ SST model yields the best numerical prediction of separation bubble at the upstream edge of the weir.

As regulations of emissions from ships become more stringent, electric propulsion systems have been increasingly used to solve this problem in vessels ranging from large merchant ships to small and medium-sized ships. Methods for improving the efficiency of the electric propulsion system include the improvement of power sources; the use of a system linked to environmentally friendly power sources, such as batteries, fuel cells, and solar power; and the development of hardware and control methodology for rectifiers, power conversion devices, and propulsion motors. The method using a phase-shifting transformer with diodes has been widely used for rectification. Power semiconductor devices with grid connection to an environmentally friendly power source using DC distribution, a variable speed power source, and the application of small and medium-sized electric propulsion systems have been developed. Accordingly, the demand for active front-end (AFE) rectifiers is increasing. In this study, a method using a neural network rather than a conventional proportional-integral controller was proposed to control the AFE rectifier. Tested controller data were used to design a neural network controller trained through MATLAB/Simulink. The neural network controller was applied to a rectification system designed using PSIM software. The results indicated the effectiveness of improving the waveform and power factor DC output stage according to the load variation. The proposed system can be applied as a rectification system for small and medium-sized environmentally friendly ships.
A numerical model of three-dimensional soil water distribution for drip irrigation management under cropped conditions was developed using Richards equation in Cartesian coordinates. The model accounts for both seasonal and diurnal changes in evaporation and transpiration, and the growth of plant root and the shape of root zone. Solutions were numerically approximated using the Crank-Nicolson implicit finite difference technique on the block-centered grid system and the Gauss-Seidel elimination in tandem. The model was tested under several conditions to allow the flow rates and configurations of drip emitters vary. In general, simulation results agreed well with experimental results and were as follows. The velocity of soil-water flow decreased drastically with distance from the drip source, and the rate of expansion of the wetted zone decreased rapidly during irrigation. The wetting front of wetted zone from a surface drip emitter traveled farther in vertical direction than in horizontal direction. Under this experimental weather condition, water use efficiency of a drip-irrigated apple field was greatest for 4-drip-emitter system buried at 25 cm, resulting from 10% increase in transpiration but 20% reduction in soil evaporation compared to those for surface 1-drip emitter system. Soil moisture retention curve obtained using disk tension infiltrometer showed significant difference from the curve obtained with pressure plate extractor.
